Getting ready to steal the gem from Absolon

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Talk to Silniel the Maven for more orders.
  2. Steal a special soul gem from the Mages Guild.
  3. Return it to Silniel.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Silniel the Maven's next task is to steal a unique soul gem from the Mages Guild. It seems that one of the wizard lords of the Telvanni knows that the guild has the gem and wants to own it for him or her self. The lord concerned admits to not liking Imperial guilds, but has turned to the Thieves Guild out of need.

The location of the gem depends on how far you have got through the Mages Guild quests. If you haven't started the Mages Guild quest Herne's Soul, the gem is in the possession of the enchanter Hermalian. If you have completed the quest, you will have already given the gem to Absolon, and of course if the quest is currently active, you have the gem yourself.

If you don't already have it, steal the gem and hand it over to Silniel. Your reputation with the Thieves Guild jumps by three points, and Silniel's disposition towards you by ten. She also removes any bounty you currently have. Lastly, Silniel tells you that the "client" for this job wanted whoever completed it to get a special piece of armor: the Cuirass of Mobility. If you had to kill either Hermalian or Absolon, you only get one point of guild reputation and no disposition increase... but you still get the cuirass.

Notes[edit]

  • At first glance, the Cuirass of Mobility looks like a good magic item with its 100 point Resist Paralysis enchantment. If you put it on, however, the cuirass starts to emit a foul odor and turns out to be cursed so you can't remove it. It will now appear as a Rancid Netch Leather Cuirass and the resist paralysis enchantment is joined by an 80 point Drain Personality one. The foul stench from the cuirass means that nobody will talk to you. The only way to get rid of it is to wait for it to break during combat at which point it disappears. The Telvanni Lord that hired the guild really doesn't like Imperial Guilds.

The following Quest_ID and Index codes can be used with the Journal Console command to manually update the quest to a certain point.

Herne's Soul (TR_m1_TG_Herne's Soul)
Index Finishes Quest Journal Entry
10 Silniel the Maven told me that one of the Telvanni wizard lords wants me to steal a Herne's Soul from the Guild of Mages. One of the Mages Guild members will probably be carrying it. I am not to resort to murder in obtaining the soul.
20 I have snatched the prized soulgem from Hermalian's pockets. Silniel in the Howling Noose will be eager to see it.
100 Finishes quest☑ I brought the herne's soul back to Silniel the Maven. She rewarded me with an enchanted cuirass from the client.
110 Finishes quest☑ I brought the herne's soul back to Silniel the Maven. She rewarded me with an enchanted cuirass from the client, but she was not happy that I had killed a member of the Mages Guild.
120 Finishes quest☑ When I put on the cuirass from the Thieves Guild's Telvanni client, it instantly took on an extremely foul odor. Furthermore, I found that I was unable to remove the cuirass. I think I'm stuck with the smell until this thing breaks. I guess Silniel wasn't kidding about the client not caring for the Imperial guilds.
130 Finishes quest☑ That fetid cuirass finally broke off, and vanished as soon as it did. Good riddance.
