Getting Suspended[edit]

From in-game testing, it looks like the only way to trigger this quest is by murdering someone "important" to the College. In other words, fellow students like Brelyna, J'zargo, and Onmund don't seem to count. Assault doesn't seem to be sufficient to trigger it, regardless of who you assault. This doesn't quite match up with what I saw in the CK, though, so I'm wondering if anybody's triggered this quest any other way, or with less important people? (And if anybody's wondering, in the CK, it looks like you have to kill any member of the College, regardless of rank.) Robin Hood  (talk) 08:36, 3 February 2013 (GMT)

All the "important" members are essential so I think it's safe to say this quest is broken. I have never been able to get this quest to start no matter what I do to the other members of the College. The three students can die but this only causes everyone else to attack you. Everyone else takes a beating but won't die, so again no quest. — Unsigned comment by 49.180.129.186 (talk) at 20:07 on 24 March 2015
Not having looked at this in two years, I just went back to check and you can certainly kill some of the mages. The first one I came across in testing was Nirya and she went down with no problem, which triggered the quest, so it certainly is possible to trigger it, but I'm pretty sure murder is the only way. Why fellow students didn't trigger it is still a mystery to me, though. I see nothing that would exempt them from triggering the quest. Robin Hood  (talk) 04:37, 25 March 2015 (GMT)
I've found the reason that the students (and possibly others) won't trigger this quest: they're marked as being unavailable for most other quests ("Reserved" in CK-speak) by their dialogue quest. I'm not sure why that is, since it's not the norm, but it is, so the three students will never count for this quest. Robin Hood  (talk) 05:31, 25 March 2015 (GMT)
Based on my own testing it seems only killing Nirya or Sergius Turrianus triggers this quest. 101.171.85.84 05:10, 16 April 2015 (GMT)
Since this has gone back and forth a few times, and there was some confusing wording in the fix discussion, the recent edit to the page confirmed that Brelyna will indeed trigger this quest, and I've double-checked that in an unmodified game and in the CK. Only J'zargo and Onmund cause the bug. Robin Hood  (talk) 06:46, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Getting Unsuspended[edit]

Having the opposite problem myself - I'm constantly blowing my mage guild companion away with stray spells and having to restart. What's the quickest and dirtiest way to resurrect the companion and reverse the expulsion? (Resurrect I can do - but then I'm still expelled.) — Unsigned comment by 99.42.81.32 (talk) at 20:12 on 5 February 2013

Killing self or being killed by a member[edit]

After deciding to consume a whole bunch of potions/poisons and promptly dying, I noticed that this quest suddenly started, so I think killing yourself counts as killing (another) member of the college. I also seem to get this quest if I am accidentally (or at least I hope accidentally) killed by a student/follower. I am using the unofficial patches, so that might have something to do with it.

...But I didn't do anything...[edit]

Exactly this: I somehow found myself with this quest despite no harm befalling anyone at the college, myself included, at my hands or anyone else's. I even took a little trip to the Dead Body Cleanup Cell and did a quick inventory. I found Roggvir, Severio Pelagia, and Varona Nelas, who die on their own during the course of the game; Galmar Stone-Fist, Calixto Corrium, and Grelod the Kind, who I personally killed during quests that required their deaths; Jawanan, Odar, and Melaran, undoubtedly victims of the dragons that have been plaguing the hell out of Solitude for some reason; and Idesa Sadri, who I don't actually know what happened to but she's certainly not connected to Winterhold. There's also a coffin for J'datharr, the Khajiit assassin who hangs around Windhelm trying to kill Malborn and has nothing to do with Winterhold either. Unless someone knows somewhere else to look for dead bodies from Winterhold, I'm forced to assume the game just bugged out and gave me the quest for no reason.--Shahrazad the Listener (talk) 21:25, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

I just had this start in the middle of a fight nowhere near the college, and the only thing I could think of is Serana had just taken some flack from a Fire Rune I'd placed; unless that Snowy Sabre Cat was a member of the college.72.73.35.133 20:18, 23 March 2020 (GMT)
