Is this really necessary?[edit]

I think not. Also, the Jarls are already listed elsewhere. — Unsigned comment by 187.67.227.156 (talk) at 03:16 on 22 November 2011

Why not? It's something important enough to Skyrim culture to have its own page, especially since there's a lot more detail that goes into Jarls than, lets say, Counts and Countess, because of the replacement Jarls and such. I think the creator did a very good job with it, and many people would find this useful. Skysky 23:54, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
I think this page is very good. I enjoy looking at all the replacement jarls on one page. Especially since I ususally only have one playthrough. It's good to see what I missed out on. — Unsigned comment by 88.104.206.42 (talk) at 01:38 on 25 February 2012

Solitude[edit]

Is it a little farfetched to say Erikur and Bryling replace Elisif? She's still Jarl after the Stormcloaks quest, and she's not angry at the player afterwards, which I find strange. Skysky 00:14, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Oh that would be my mistake. It just so happened that they were the only remaining people in the Jarl faction, so I assumed that they took over from her (why they are in that faction is a mystery). But yeah I discovered that doesn't happen, so feel free to change it. --Dorsal Axe 15:14, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Oh no problem! I guess someone else did, I just now got to read this. I'm too modest and worried to change other people's work, anyway. Thanks! Skysky 02:02, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Became a thane twice?[edit]

I became a thane of Whiterun before I took over the hold with Stormcloaks. Now the new Jarl gave me the Blade of Whiterun and made me a thane again. Bug? I assume this would happen wit other holds as well. — Unsigned comment by 194.86.149.193 (talk) at 08:23 on 13 December 2011

When the position of Thane is dependent on the Jarl. When the Jarlship changes, you are no longer a Thane in the same way the former Jarl is no longer the Jarl, if that makes sense. 71.252.194.8 19:42, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Jarl and count[edit]

If we have a seperate page for jarl, why don't we make a seperate page for count in oblivion(Vvardfell 03:12, 29 December 2011 (UTC))

Good question. Interested in hearing that answer myself. ESTEC 03:21, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Etymology[edit]

In keeping with the overall Norse theme, "Jarl" is simply the Norse form for "Earl." In old Sweden, a Jarl was a leader ranking immediately under the King. --174.6.51.17 06:35, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Jarls = Kings, not counts[edit]

According to the book Skyrim's rule Jarls are just what Nords call their Kings. Or is when it says they are equivalent to counts referring to the equivalent in Oblivion? — Unsigned comment by 62.42.19.168 (talk) at 16:45 on 2 October 2012

They would be kings, each independent of the other, ruled by a High King, formerly Torygg. They have more power than the counts in Oblivion, and only co-operate when it suits them. A High King cannot force the Jarls to do something they really do not want to do. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 16:58, 2 October 2012 (GMT)

Vignar exiled.[edit]

Removed this line "Vignar Gray-Mane will go to Viola Giordano's House" from the paragraph starting "Several jarls, however, will go elsewhere if they are ousted from government.". As far as I know it's not possible for Vignar to be exiled as if he becomes Jarl you've permanently chosen your side in the civil war and Whiterun isn't involved in negotiations in Season Unending. I'm sorry if I'm mistaken. Valadez   Talk  Contributions  22:46, 25 March 2013 (GMT)

Indeed. The last chance you get at switching side is during the Jagged Crown quest, and it's actually the quest right before Battle for Whiterun. There may be a package in case it happens but, in an unmodified game, it's impossible. Elakyn (talk) 14:02, 26 March 2013 (GMT)
There is indeed a package, I suppose that makes it notable enough to mention, right? 109.153.131.239 08:26, 17 July 2013 (GMT)

Ulfric Image Text[edit]

"Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak, one of the first people you meet in Skyrim" I wouldn't call being sent to an execution with him gagged meeting him. Seeing him would be a better word in my opinion. Who thinks it should be changed to "first people you see" or a different text altogether? --ZinnLav (talk) 09:59, 9 December 2013 (GMT)

I've changed it to something different. Is that better? --S'drassaYes? 17:05, 9 December 2013 (GMT)
That one looks much better. :) --ZinnLav (talk) 02:56, 10 December 2013 (GMT)
