Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Swarm of frenzied mudcrabs

This quest can be started after No Contest has been completed by talking to Viriya:

Know of anyone in need of fishing work around Skyrim?
"Maybe you can help me. You're headed to Dawnstar. It's all in this note. This won't be easy, but that's why I'm sending you. Think you can handle it?"
I'm always up for one of your crab dilemmas. / Just point me toward something with claws, and I'll make it dead.
"Thanks."

Either option leads to the same outcome, Viriya will hand you a letter that mentions multiple accounts of fishermen being attacked near a small shack on the shore west of Dawnstar by a swarm of mudcrabs. Travel to the shack, west of Dawnstar to investigate. Once you arrive at the shack frenzied mudcrabs will begin to swarm you, kill all twelve of them.

Once you have killed all the mudcrabs, investigate the body of Seviur to find his journal. Read the journal and you will discover that Seviur was using pacification magic and necromancy on mudcrabs which started to fail, until eventually the mudcrabs turned on him in a frenzy. You can then return to Viriya to speak to her:

The mudcrabs have been slain. They were driven into a fury by a necromancer.
"We sure show them, eh? Thanks for your part in all that."
Seviur drew them to the coast using magic, but he lost control over them.
"I understand. I've come to rely on you. There's something I want you to have. It was my father's. It would be my honor if you carried it. May the gods keep you."
This Alik'ri rod is fit for a master fisherman. Thank you, Viriya.
"Stay sharp out there."

You will be rewarded with an Alik'ri Fishing Rod and the ability to craft the rod.

Quest Stages[edit]

Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
5 Viriya has entrusted me with another task directly from her. I should read what her note has to say.
Objective 0: Read the letter on mudcrab attacks
10 An unexplained swarm of aggressive mudcrabs have recently begun attacking fishermen at a fishing shack on the coast west of Dawnstar. Viriya has tasked me with eliminating them in order to make the coasts safe once more.
Objective 5: Investigate the area near the fishing shack west of Dawnstar
20 I've arrived at the fishing shack west of Dawnstar. As I approached, frenzied mudcrabs attacked from the sea. I'll have to defeat them in order to make this area safe again.
Objective 10: Kill the Frenzied Mudcrabs 0/12
30 I've defeated the swarm of frenzied mudcrabs. I should investigate the area to see if I can discover why the mudcrabs in this area have become so aggressive.
Objective 20: Discover the origin of the frenzied mudcrabs
Objective 25: Read Seviur's journal
40 I discovered that Seviur, a novice necromancer, was practicing his arts on the coastline. He cast a powerful illusion spell to bring mudcrabs to the shore where he repeatedly killed and resurrected them in order to hone his abilities. Aggressive mudcrabs not under Seviur's control soon began rising from the sea to attack. Eventually, Seviur was slain, but it seems that the frenzied mudcrab attacks have not stopped. I must now quell this latest mudcrab attack on the coastline.

Objective 50: Return to Viriya
200 Finishes quest☑ I returned to Viriya and told her about the mudcrab swarm and the necromancer who stirred them into a frenzy. As payment, she gave me an Alik'ri fishing rod, which should be very helpful when trying to catch smaller fish.
  • The following empty quest stages were omitted from the table: 0, 38, 300.
Notes
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage ccBGSSSE001_Crab_MQ2 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest ccBGSSSE001_Crab_MQ2.
