Developer Sketches[edit]

The IP does kind of have a point. MK drew this, but is it really concept art for one of the games, or is it just one of MK's sketches? I think we should discuss how to treat these pieces further.

Addendum: I don't mean just ending it at "a developer drew it so it's official"; I want to 1) define what MK's Belharza sketches are, and 2) have a meaningful discussion about how we should treat non-concept art from current and former devs. -MolagBallet (talk) 08:17, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

As far as I know its art he drew for Morrowind and published years later. There's some art he did for the games that's never been seen, like a sketch of Zurin Arctus made during Morrowind, and other concept artists have art for the games that is published a long time after the project finishes. (edit conflict) I think Dcking's wording is appropriate here, i.e. sketch rather than concept art. A lot of this MK artwork in particular is very important (e.g. The Fall of Ald'ruhn) and should be included on the appropriate lore articles. Perhaps the best approach is to treat it like other UOL sources, i.e. leave a note on the talk page outlining your justification for its inclusion. In this case, a sketch of a baby Imperial Minotaur by a former developer seems like an excellent addition to this page. —Legoless (talk) 08:58, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
Agreed, the opposition in recent changes just made me think about how we should be treating these sketches, whether or not they should be delegated solely to galleries, if their inclusion warrants a talk page post, etc. I know Belharza's page uses one of these sketches as the main image.
On a related note: sourcing. I think we're kind of doing ourselves a disservice by not linking to specific archived posts which we've retrieved things from in these images' file summaries (referring to MK's tumblr posts; none of the tumblr sketches I've seen uploaded here have had source links). Having specific links to sources helps our case when people question where an image comes from. Saying "this came from MK's tumblr" is one thing, but having a link puts the proof in the pudding. I'd go through and do it myself, but I don't have MK's tumblr bookmarked (nor an archive link to start with), I'm not sure exactly how many of these sketches there are on-wiki or where they are, and it's 4 am. -MolagBallet (talk) 11:04, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
