Shore leave is always great for the crew. I enjoy it myself, especially here in Leyawiin. Elsa always makes me feel so welcome. So much nicer being with an honest woman than a wench like Mirabelle who only likes seamen if your purse is fat enough.

Well, that brings an end to a week's rest, back to work. Money doesn't make itself, though not far off in this business. Marlon was giving me a funny look as we got back on board.

Marlon has continued to act strangely, even more sullen than usual, I'll have to look into replacing him when we get to Anvil. Perhaps Safia could be persuaded to step up, she has been running the training side of things very well.

Evening: I spoke to Marlon after dinner, and explained that I would no longer be requiring his services once we reached land at Anvil. I wanted to pay him up front to give him the chance to disembark earlier if he felt like it. I'm sick of having him on my boat. He didn't take it well and got really angry, said I'd "live to regret this if I was lucky." Perhaps I should have kept quiet till we were in port.

The cargo delivery to the Imperial City went smoothly, a very lucrative trip. We will stop to pick up supplies in Bravil. It's much cheaper to buy food here than Leyawiin; they know they are the last major town before the sea, and charge like it. We will only take on water there, and maybe I will visit Elsa again...

A curious thing happened today: while taking on supplies, one of the ropes working the dock crane snapped and dropped a pallet onto the wharf, right where I had been standing. If I hadn't spotted my friend Henantier and gone over to say hello, I would have been killed. The thing is, I'm sure I saw Marlon grinning. If I could prove he had done it on purpose I'd run him through. I need more proof, however.

Leyawiin: While I was at Best Goods and Guarantees paying for our supplies, I overheard Marlon talking to some men. He is going to smuggle them on board tonight so that they can murder me. I have to get out of here!

[The handwriting deteriorates into a scrawl from here]

I have spoken to my crew and announced that we are to sail to Anvil. I have just arranged for an extremely rich client to meet the ship there. It's the deal of a life time. That's what they think anyway. There is no client, and I won't be going. Elsa and I are going to leave Leyawiin tonight. We will cut overland and meet the ship at Anvil with help.

Bad news - Elsa doesn't know anyone who can help us. It's down to me now, but I'm too old to take on assassins. I seem to remember there being someone in the family who can help, a nephew or a niece or something. I have to get word to them.

I'm putting the log into my desk. That idiot Marlon will never think to look there. He never has been interested in the paperwork side of the business or doing things properly; in fact, I doubt he can even read. I should have fired him a long time ago, and this is the trouble I get for going soft in my old age! Hopefully I will be able to contact my family from the Imperial City and send for help.

Noises at the cabin door... thank The Nine I went for a galleon with a back door and balcony. We have to go...
