Bug[edit]
All the items needed for the sheogorath quest can be obtained in Llewayin Mage's Guild To avoid a bounty, wait for the Innkeeper in Border Watch to go to sleep before lockpicking the display case containing the Olroy Cheese.
The thing about the quest constantly telling you to talk to Ri'Bassa is a bug. Specifically, I think you're supposed to talk to him about Three Signs again, but the option isn't there UNLESS your disposition is lower than 50 or 60, not sure, in which case he will tell you that he doesen't trust you enough to talk to you (the topic will remain yellow). If anyone has time, check this theory in CS (not sure how CS works, but look for conversation about Three Signs), and we could add it in the Notes or Bugs section Lisan al Gaib 19:55, 12 January 2007 (EST)
- I'm not completely clear on what the bug is here, so I'll start by trying to summarize more precisely the steps that happen during this part of the quest. After the rats have come, you get a quest update:
- I have used cheese to lure many rats into Border Watch. I should speak with Ri'bassa to see if he believes this to be part of the prophecy.
- At this point you're at quest stage 50; as long as you're at stage 50 your quest target (i.e. the location your green arrow points to) is set to be Ri'Bassa. Talking to Ri'bassa at this point doesn't do anything to change your quest stage. Your quest stage only increases once the livestock have died, at which point you reach quest stage 60 and get one of two updates (depending upon how the sheep died):
- I have killed all the livestock in Border Watch. or
- I have poisoned the grain supply in the town of Border Watch. This has killed all the livestock.
- Only at this point will your quest target be changed; briefly there is none, then once Sheogorath talks to you (putting you at quest stage 65), your quest target becomes the center of town.
- So I suppose the problem here is that at stage=50 your quest target is pointing you to Ri'Bassa, even though you don't need to talk to him, and continues pointing him to after you talk to him. In theory, the quest marker should perhaps be turned off at this point (just like during the cheese+rats portion, where your omniscient journal doesn't tell you exactly where to go), to make it clear that you're on your own to figure out what to do. There's nothing you can do while talking to Ri'Bassa to change that situation. Does that answer any of the questions? --Nephele 21:25, 12 January 2007 (EST)

- All but one :). Why does the topic Three Signs appear when his disposition is lower than 60/50? First time I discovered that was because I punched him (Serbian last-resort method for solving problems... works very well on TVs, and surprisingly well in Oblivion (Vampire cure)! :) ), then yielded to him. Topic showed up. However, he would not speak to me. I tried raising his disposition by a Charm spell and by Persuasion (on two seperate occassions), as soon as I do, it disappears. I then tried not punching him but instead Persuading him not to like me, topic showed up again. And again, when I raised his disposition... gone. Btw, I realise this might be very simple-minded of me but the stages... I see a (small) pattern of progression by 5. Then, at the part where I think there's a bug, it suddenly jumps by 10. My guess is... Bethesda lost a stage :) Lisan al Gaib 21:51, 12 January 2007 (EST)

- There are four possible responses to the topic 'Three Signs'.
- Two are the long, 'useful' responses where he tells you what the three signs are (the only difference is whether or not some of the sheep have already died). This response will appear if his disposition is >= 60, and the quest is at stage 30 (i.e., when you first get to Border Watch).
- One is when he really dislikes you, I will tell you nothing of the three signs. You are an unbeliever and a fool. This response appears any time his disposition is <40.
- The fourth is when he only kind of dislikes you, I do not believe you are prepared for that kind of knowledge. You are still a stranger to me. This response appears if his disposition is >=40, <60, and the quest stage >=40.
- There does seem to be a noticeable bug with that last one; I'd guess it's supposed to be if the quest stage <40. I can also see that it would be confusing have the topic show up at low disposition, then disappear when you raise his disposition. If I understand how these dialogues work, they would always be in gold at low disposition (even if you've heard the useful response once), as a hint that you should raise the disposition.
- There are four possible responses to the topic 'Three Signs'.

-
- As for the quest stage numbering, my impression is that the quest stages tend to go in increments of 10 for major steps in the quest, then use smaller intervals for intermediate steps. The stages for this quest are 10, 20, 30, 40, 45, 47, 50, 60, 65, 70, 100, 105. --Nephele 17:52, 13 January 2007 (EST)

The Fantastic Finish...or not[edit]
Was anyone else very underwhelmed by the finale of this quest? I was expecting a mass suicide a la Heaven's Gate (morbid, I know) or a mass desertion of the town when the dogs started falling...but all the NPCs just chatted like nothing was happening. Kinda odd that they didn't notice the all-important third sign or whatever. 152.23.196.162 23:58, 19 February 2007 (EST)
- Might be a bug... When the dogs start falling from the sky, NPCs start running around (screaming even if I remember correctly) Lisan al Gaib
- Mkay, I'll try it again with my fresh re-install of the game. Thanks. =) 152.23.196.162 16:34, 2 April 2007 (EDT)
Shivering Isles[edit]
Erm...big gap in the story, how do I do this quest to help Sheogorath...If I AM Sheogorath...?
- Sheogorath helps those who help themselves..... ?
- Instead of you getting the quest from yourself, Haskill gives it to you. Not really a as much of a gap in the story as it is an Easter Egg (although that's not that big, either). Qubeheheheh 08:10, 17 June 2007 (EDT)
Dialogue[edit]
Anyone knows dialogue for Shivering Isles version of this quest?
Not sure about the rest of the quest, but his intro speech is the same except in the new voice.
Here's the dialog directly from the CS export file. It's not liner, but it's fairly easy to piece together what goes where. --Dws90 01:14, 16 April 2007 (EDT)

Prior warning of the Shivering Isles?[edit]
Whilst this comment is very speculative, it is possibly true. The dialogue of the worshippers of Sheogorath in Cyrodiil, as well as being amusing/disturbing could have been Bethesda's way of giving a hint of things in the Shivering Isles. Scrumptious, darling children A reference to the fact that you can find Pygmy bones and a Pygmy skull- dead children. Bugs, bugs! Everywhere. A reference to the Elytra, and the Addiction quest, where you must find the 'bugs' to survive. I used to be a dog. I got better. Not a better dog, though. I'm a terrible dog now A reference to the fact that skinned hounds are in SI, and they are faster and more powerful than normal dogs. 'Terrible dog' meaning that although they are more powerful, they look revolting. Can you see the light? The bright shining light? the coming of Jyggalag, in a burst of light. Not sure about the eat your eyes part, though. On the other hand, it could just all be a coincidence. Comment please!--Merco 08:50, 16 August 2007 (EDT)
-
- From what I remember sheogorath says sometihng about plucking your eyes out when you exit convo with him. The people at his shrine may have previously been to SI and gone crazy like the others however this is most likely coincedence. --Lavadragon 10:34, 30 August 2007 (EDT)
Here's one; when you tell Ferul Ravel you don't want business with Sheogorath, he says "Then you should run along. Fly fly. Make tracks. Get going. Run for your life! And have a nice day." Sometimes Sheogorath says "Now go away. Leave. Run... Or die." and maybe "Killed and ate a bosmer there. But it made me sick. Saw Lord Sheogorath in the vomitus, so it's all right." might have something to do with something in the isles. Perhaps how both bosmer duchys get killed? --M'aiq the Liar 23:17, 29 August 2008 (EDT)
Journal entries[edit]
Does installing the Shivering Isles change the journal entries of the completed quest, if you have completed it before you install the expansion? The reason I ask is that the entries on mine, if you check the completed quest log, shows the entry for if you are Sheogorath (Haskill has rewarded me for my efforts by giving me Wabbajack.)when I know I completed the quest months before I got the Shivering Isles, and i know it had the normal (Sheogorath has rewarded me for my efforts by giving me Wabbajack.) entry before I installed it. Also, sorry for the redundancy in the question, couldn't figure out how to phrase it. Neoman4426 23:50, 30 December 2007 (EST)
- The answer is already sort of on the page but could probably benefit from some clarification. You'll notice that you get the Haskill version of the text "if the player has started the Symbols of Office quest". What that means is that if you complete the quest before installing SI you'll get the "Sheogorath has rewarded me..." version as usual, and that will stay in your journal even after installing Shivering Isles. However, at the moment you complete the Symbols of Office quest the text will change to the Haskill version. That probably counts as a minor glitch. Thanks for spotting that! —Rpeh•T•C•E• 21:42, 31 December 2007 (EST)
After completing Shivering Isles??[edit]
What happens if you complete the Shivering Isles pack and try to complete this shrine quest? Does the old Sheogorath talk to you? If so, that would be a loophole. Besides, it wouldn't make much sense to talk about yourself like you are a different person. Your character IS Sheogorath now. — Unsigned comment by 209.234.215.93 (talk)
- As it says in the article, if you have already replaced Sheogorath, Haskill gives you the details of this quest. --Gaebrial 04:24, 7 July 2008 (EDT)
Problem[edit]
The statue says that Sheogorath demands a more powerful champion to begin this quest, even if I have all the needed offerings and I'm level 14.How I could begin his quest?
Offerings[edit]
Where can i get yarn? — Unsigned comment by 84.68.108.119 (talk) on 25 April 2009
- Yet again, may I suggest that you read the article. If you can read an answer posted on a talk page, then I have to assume that you're also capable of reading an article, so I'm not sure why you're having such a hard time doing it without first asking redundant questions. --NepheleTalk 13:28, 25 April 2009 (EDT)
I'm not sure about the rest of the items (I didn't steal them), but my stolen yarn is not registering when I activate the shrine.(70.15.38.127 20:25, 23 June 2009 (EDT))
Effect of installing SI[edit]
Moved from article: If you complete the quest without SI installed, and then install SI, the quest will be at Stage 30, but marked as complete. If you speak to any of the worshippers other than Ravel, the quest will be moved to Stage 10, and the others will persist in telling you to speak to Ravel, but Ravel himself will still congratulate you as though you completed the quest, and the quest will still mark as being completed in your journal.
- This is not my experience. I have two games that completed the quest prior to installing Shivering Isles, and have not noticed such thing, nor have I heard bug reports about it before. --Timenn < talk > 04:34, 14 June 2009 (EDT)
Head of lettuce[edit]
I'm having a hard time with the lettuce part of the offerings. Are "Lettuce" and "Head of Lettuce" two different items in game? If so that would be the problem, and could someone direct me to where I could find the "Head of Lettuce" rather than just "Lettuce". When I propose a lettuce, yarn and a lesser soul gem (tried with empty soul level and filled to make sure that was not the problem) I keep getting the message that I do not have the required offerings. Bottom line question, is there a difference between "lettuce" and "head of lettuce"?80.203.55.88 16:09, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- No, "lettuce" and "head of lettuce are the same". You just have to give him one sample of lettuce, along with a lesser soul gem and yarn. I don't know what's causing the problem in your game, however. Wolok gro-Barok->T->C->E 17:28, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- It may be a problem with a mod you have loaded. There are some mods that introduce new versions of soul gems, so it may be that the soul gem you are offering isn't a 'vanilla' gem, and so isn't recognised by the shrine. --Gaebrial 07:04, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- In my game the problem has been two different kinds of 'lesser soul gems' at the sorcerer shop 'A Warlock's Luck' in Bravil. Both gems are empty, but one is more expensive. The cheaper one does not work as an offering. I used the german language version, which is known for flawed translations. --93.245.186.68 21:02, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
- The cheaper of the two in the English version is a Petty Soul Gem, however the translation for both Petty and Lesser Soul Gems in the German version is "Kleiner Seelenstein", so the only way to tell in an unmodified game would be by the price, I think. – Robin Hood↝talk 01:04, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Glitch?[edit]
If you beat shivering isle after this quest. the worshipers do not recognize you as Sheogorath, i dont know if it changes if you beat shivering first but would this constitute a glitch/bug? --SneakyPenguin77 (also my Gamertag) 21:34, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- No, merely a slight oversight. Then again, you don't have the appearance of the old Sheogorath, and it is implied by the game that you need to grow in your role with the passing of time. --Timenn-<talk> 14:19, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
Help![edit]
Okay, I stole the cheese, all the rats died from the poison, I collected the poison and now it says I hafta put it in the food trough, one problem; where the hell is the sheep's food trough? I run around the area with the sheep, clicking everything I can, dropping the poison in random places, nothings happening. Where is the sheep's food trough? --Sencilia 03:45, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
- NVM I figured it out. --Sencilia 02:00, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
The Dogs![edit]
I was doing this quest and at least one of the flaming dogs survived. This caused no harm to the plot, but was mildly amusing. The dog walked a few feet, disappeared, and then reappeared where it was supposed to fall. I then killed it. Not a big deal. SkoomaManiac 22:44, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
- The same happened to me. What I think is after the dialogue is finished dogs spawn several hundred feet above the ground with a long effect fire damage spell and the dog that survives hits a stone fence and it dosen't do all of the falling damage. Apparently the dogs do not have a scripted death.--Corevette789 00:47, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
-
- I actually wanted a dog to survive, just for the fun of having one wandering the town ever after. It only took about 5 tries, so it appears to be fairly common/easy to get. EmmBee 17:07, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Talking to the Shaman[edit]
It is not required you say you are a scholar. Mocking him works just as well, if you have maxed his disposition towards you beforehand. (If this works for Evil characters with Infamy I don't know).
Sheogorath: A small gripe[edit]
Just 2 cents. The game designers could have done a much better job researching what 'Madness' is. While he appears to have a manic disposition and certainly demonstrates antisocial behavior to the degree of being called a sociopath, his behavior does not fit the profile of insanity. (Neither manic tendencies and sociopathic behavior qualify a person as mentally incompetent: not of sound mind. If this was the case, the vast majority of criminals would not be held accountable for their actions. Adolph Hitler was a perfect example of a raging homicidal sociopath, but by all accounts was mentally competent.)
Where you can find all offerings at once...[edit]
The chorrol mages guild has a petty soul gem (display case by the stairs, also others dotted about)and in the crates on the top floor you can find lettuce and yarn. Thought it may help someone!AdairTheNord 17:24, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
- There are a lot of places you could possibly find all offerings. Most crates and such are generic loot lists, so yarn is not always guaranteed. --DKong27 Talk Cont 17:29, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
Weird[edit]
I stole cheese, then i didnt know what to do with it so i just pickpocketed Ri'Bassa, stole his poison, poisoned sheep food and then normally ended quest with third phase....... completly skipped the first phase and now quest is finished, but i cannot get rid of that cheese in my inventory!! any suggestions what to do with it? btw its weird nobody noticed this bug before...BTW its with newest patch on PC
- There is no way on consoles to remove them from your inventory. --Manic 16:59, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- I don't understand how that glitch could occur, don't you need to fulfill three parts of the prophecy (rats, sick livestock, burning dogs) to complete the quest? Kitkat1749 17:09, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thats what i dont understand either, but quest finished fine, i got the reward and all...... its probably not nessesary to even fulfill first task, its just that without it you cant get your hands on that rat poison, but the glitch is probably in the fact that you CAN get that poison simply by pickpocketing the Ri'Bassa.....now the quest is finished and iam stuck with that smelly cheese forever, even the cooking pot where i should put it during the quest wont now accept it.....
Lost in translation.[edit]
There's a section in the Bugs bit advising German players about translation difficulties. However, it's written in English. If anyone's capable, perhaps they should provide a translation? If not, I can use google translate, but it will have syntax errors. Apollo Quinn 23:42, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Scripted Sheep Death.[edit]
I had the wandering sheep issue. From the note on the page, I assumed I would have to go around killing the stragglers after I poisoned the feed trough. However, when I poisoned the trough and watched the two sheep left in the pen, one of them would eventually eat, get the poison animation, and after 30 seconds or so, ALL the sheep die. It didn't matter if they were in the pen or wandering the countryside, as long as one sheep ate the poison, they all dropped dead. I did it three times, and it worked that way every time. So their death must be scripted. I'm amending the note on the page to reflect that as long as one sheep remains in the pen, and you use the poison, there's no need to go hunting the escapees down.
A note for further testing- in my game, there were always two sheep left. They all died within a short time whether one or both ate. It would be interesting if anyone ever gets a game with NO sheep in the pen to see if they need to eat at all, or if the scripted death occurs as long as the trough has been poisoned. Naked Followers?[edit]
Not sure if this is a possible occurrence elsewhere, but I approached Sheogorath's shrine and not one of the followers present was wearing a full set of clothes. It was either a shirt, or just shoes, or just a hat. None of them wore pants. I thought it was fitting, since this IS Sheogorath we're talking about, but a trip to this page told me that they're SUPPOSED to be dressed. — Unsigned comment by 173.168.133.71 (talk) at 14:34 on 21 April 2013 (GMT)
Cheese case key[edit]
My sneak skill is 48 and I absolutely cannot pickpocket the key to the cheese case. I've reloaded at least 10 times and got caught every time. Is this a bug? I thought weightless and valueless items were virtually guaranteed. Dbbolton (talk) 05:47, 19 May 2014 (GMT)
- Value of stolen items is one factor, but the success of pickpocketing is also affected by your sneak skill and that of your target. I've had problems stealing things even as an expert of sneak, so it's definitely possible. Honestly, I usually just pick the lock to the case rather than trying to steal the key, it's a lot easier. Great quest to train skills[edit]
Casting a weakness to fire spell with a with 100 foot range made all the rats attack me. Good place to train armor, block and restoration.--Maldini (talk) 11:40, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
