The UESPWiki – Your source for The Elder Scrolls since 1995
Jump to: navigation, search

This page is for looking at references and connections between the Elder Scrolls universe and real-world mythology and literature. Given the sheer amount of lore in the ES games, and the number of ways it borrows from real history, this page could grow unmanageably large in time. That's why it's purely experimental (for now).

If you spot any tidbits of information around the Wiki, want to make a contribution yourself or if there are any other pages like this you're aware of, please share. Any and all sources are welcome. Like with any Wiki, though, the more verifiable, the better.

This page has no format yet. For now I'll just be using it as a notebook to gather all the connections I've noticed and others that Wiki users have already pointed out, as well as maybe some ideas for presentation.

NOTE: The completed page will probably have the reverse of the format shown here; it will list real life cultures/history/etc. and then list all the ways in which the game references in their section.

Task list

  1. Glean all user contributed information from the Wiki
    1. Check history of edits for deleted/moved information
    2. Check and make links to sources
    3. Attribute information to users
  2. TBC

Etymology

  • 'The name "Talos" is taken from Greek mythology, wherein Talos was a giant bronze automaton given to Europa by Zeus. This is fitting, as the Emperor used the divine golem Numidium to conquer the Aldmeri Dominion.'
  • 'Sotha' is used in Blake as a God representing the outbreak of war. Possible connection to Sotha Sil?

    • Style of architecture in Oblivion (Bruma) and Morrowind (Solstheim)
  • Imperials as Ancient Greeks or Romans:
    • Check names against Roman names
    • Imperial history parallels to Romans
      • Empire, style of rule, military heirarchy etc.
      • Military tactics?
      • Are there any secret organisations that match the Blades?
      • East Empire Company = ? British Imperialism?
      • Arena and Colosseum culture
    • Style of dress, armor (esp. Helms)
  • Bretons as real life Bretons
    • Check names against Breton names
  • Yokudans/Redguards = ?
    • Probably based on a mixture of cultures, check names, aesthetics, history of Yokuda
  • Argonians as Native Americans
    • Check descriptive names against real Native American names
    • Connection with nature, utilising all resources, 'born from the trees'

Regions as Real Places

  • Compare Akavir to East Asia and Asian mythology

Quests as References

  • Thirsk Meadhall, compare to Beowulf, Undyrfrykte(sp?) to Grendel

Creatures Races as References to Fantasy

  • Dragons, Goblins, Orcs and Elves etc. (Too archetypical?)
  • Check High Elves and Wood Elves against Tolkien elves?

Other Trivia (Too much crossover with Easter Eggs?)
