"You must be from outside. I'm glad to see someone's noticed us.
A word of advice, though. Don't drink the water in here. Don't even touch it."
I've heard that the water's cursed.
"You heard right. The first researchers to drink the water said it tasted like nothing they ever drank. Made them feel strong, alive.
And then they started changing. They attacked us, like we were intruders and they were defending the city."
Do you know what caused the curse?
"Well, that's where things get truly strange. Seems that this place was built by Nedes—the ancient people who settled Craglorn before the Yokudans.
We don't know a lot about the Nedes, but it seems like these particular ones worshipped Nereids."
You think the nereids are behind the curse?
"It fits their reputation. Nereids are known for practicing a dark and twisted sorcery to control people's minds.
Drinking the water appears to turn you into a thrall of a nereid called Shada."
So how do we end the curse?
"See that pool? The water flows into it from the temple wings on either side and blocks the way to the main chamber.
My guess is if you follow the water into those wings, you'll find the source of the corruption. A nereid, if I'm right."
What about the main chamber?
"We can't reach the main chamber while the pool is corrupted. We need to find the nereids corrupting the water in the other wings first.
As for what's in the main chamber, I'm guessing it's the leader of the nereids—Shada, as her thralls call her."
I'll search the city and crypt wings for the source of the corruption.

When the New Task begins:

"Some of our researchers disappeared a few days ago in the city wing. And the crypt wing … well, we've stayed away from that one. Terrible sounds emanate from there.
I guess what I'm saying is, be careful. It's not just the water that's dangerous."

After killing the nereids in the two side sections:

(?): "So you're saying the water just … cleared up? On its own?"
Ryna: "You said wandering adventurers from the surface came down here. What did you send them to do, Sali'ma?"
Sali'ma: "I wondered if some of the corruption originated from the wings on either side. I merely asked them to investigate."
Greban: "It looks like it worked. Maybe we'll actually find something now."

Speak with him.

"I don't know how you did it, but this water's as clear as the desert sky.
I'm not going to drink any of it, mind you. But it seems safe to touch."
There was a nereid corrupting the waters in each wing.
"As I thought. The nereids are behind the corruption. I've deciphered more writings on the leader of these nereids—Shada, she's called.
It says she "blessed" the water so that the people of the city could fend off invaders."
Does it say where to find Shada?
"It says the people of the city worshipped her in a temple that was once dedicated to the stars.
There's a third wing across the way. I assume that's the temple wing, and I'd guess that Shada's in there."
So what do we do?
"I know it's a lot to ask, but this water can't be allowed to leave here while it remains cursed. It would cause a situation as bad as the Celestial invasion above.
Defeating Shada is the only way to end the curse. You must go and stop her."
I'll see what I can do.
"Feels foolish, asking you to risk your life when all I have to offer is a thank you. But you have to understand how much this means to us. And to Craglorn.
I wish you luck. We'll remain here and wait for your return."

Speaking with him again:

"I wish you the best in there. If one nereid caused all of this, the power she wields will be frightening."

After killing Shada, you must speak with him.

"Can you believe it? These people … our people who drank the water … they're starting to return. They seem to be in their right minds again!"
Shada is dead. She wanted more thralls to fight the Celestials above.
"What mad sorcery. Better that she's gone and the water cleansed.
Thank you for this. Maybe this will give us a chance to do proper research and find out what really happened to this city."

After the quest, he orders everyone to gather the injured.

Sali'ma: "Shada is dead! The waters are safe, and so … refreshing.
Hurry. Gather the injured for treatment. And let's not forget the ones we've lost."

Speaking with him again after the quest:

"We're going to get these people patched up before we worry about anything else.
At least we can rest for the time being knowing things are taken care of."
