Description/Review: This is a companion mod offering a surprisingly "aware" companion, lots of commentary, tons of functionality, and even a few quests. I almost didn't play this one. I love a good companion mod, but Arren seemed to have the wrong ingredients for my tastes. He pops up a little too early in the story (you meet him as you're escaping prison), and his power level and cheat factor are both on the high side. I finally decided to give him a try when restarting again from the beginning with a new set of mods. I'm glad I did.

Arren is exploring the prison as you're breaking out. He offers to help you, and eventually to join you long term. Once you accept his services, you'll receive considerable combat support and entertaining banter. Unlike the vast majority of companion mods, Arren is aware of both the main quest and many minor side quests. Throughout your time together, he'll comment on events, boast, tell stories on request, and generally act much more lively than most companions. This is by far the best part of the mod, and makes Arren a companion you'll remember much longer than the many nearly silent companions he's competing against.

Arren also comes with three short quests, which offer rewards for him rather than you (another point in his favor). Similarly, he will eventually demand a fair cut of your loot, and will comment and complain as you go through his inventory. The comments help mark him as a separate personality, rather than an extension of your character.

Arren is balanced for an FCOM game, and some players will find him overpowered. His inventory spawns large numbers of high value potions, potentially taking away much of the early "scrounging for every septim" feeling in a new game. Even at first level, he will summon powerful pets and bound armor; this can make early combat easier than it should be (and leave your character wondering who is really the sidekick). His inventory also causes some issues as far as giving him the armor and weapons you want him to use; his "repair" command actually adds new vanilla items, and can cause him to discard whatever you've given him.

Arren compares favorably with companions like Rhianna Redux or Red Sonia. He may be overpowered for some games or play styles, and his reasons for accompanying you could use some fleshing out, but all in all I enjoyed having him in my game. He has plenty to offer.

Note from saebel: Arren used to be called "Baddy", but was reinvisioned. The description above is a holdover from the "Baddy" days, and could probably use an update.

Description/Review: Update 1.1 adds additional voice acting! This is yet another quest mod disguised as a companion mod. It adds eight new quests and includes extensive voice acting, new armor and weapons, a new player home you can acquire, many retextured interiors, and a great storyline. The story starts with haunting dreams of a Dremora wrongfully imprisoned in Dagon's Deadlands -- and leads you to eventually taking assignments from Lord Dagon himself! This mod is simply chock-full of amazing new features. The final release is definitely a landmark event in Oblivion modding history. For example, your companion Amoz can be added to any of the main factions in vanilla Oblivion by simply summoning him in the proper guild interiors. This is just one small example -- touches of perfection like this abound. Highly recommended (but probably not for good-guy types :-). This mod conflicts with Kvatch Aftermath and Mini Cyrodiil because all three make changes to oblivion gates. The one loaded last will be the one that works. TESNexus Mod of the Month for October 2008.

Description/Review: Red Sonia is primarily a companion mod, and a good one. Sonia is a pure warrior, with basic companion functions, dialog drawn from in-game sound files, and a few non-game-breaking extras (including an unlimited supply of repair hammers and Varla stones). Your old friend Sonia is waiting for you in the Bruma chapel, holding some cash for you and ready to join you again on your adventures. Look in her inventory for the first volume of Ghouls and Ghosts, a journal kept by Sonia’s ex-partner Ashen Rose. In addition to being a very well done Oblivion story, G&G will start you off on a series of three short trips into Ayleid ruins. There you’ll recover the remaining three volumes, and learn something of the adventures shared by Sonia and Rose. While Sonia’s quest line ends there, she will remain as a companion as long as you choose to travel with her. Not a romance mod, and Sonia’s back story makes romance somewhat unsuitable for the character. Sonia's story ties into the excellent Gates to Aesgaard 1 & 2 (reviewed on the Big Quests page). If you choose to play those mods, starting off by completing Sonia's dungeon crawls can add some texture to the Gates to Aesgaard quests.

Description/Review: This is another quest mod disguised as a companion mod. Ahnassi has moved to Cyrodil and is alone and looking for friends. If you choose to help her and become her very special friend she may even invite you back to her house which she will share with you. Inspired by the Morrowind character and quests of the same name, this mod involves a series of quests to make you share a special bond. After you are finished with the quests, Ahnassi will become a full companion, willing to help you with whatever you need to do. Also, she will have special things to say and do on specific occasions and/or in certain places during your adventures together (think shopping!). For cat lovers.

Description/Review: Updated! Version 1.4 is out! This mod is designed to add romance to Oblivion, and make life at Rosethorn Hall much better. The maid you hire when purchasing Rosethorn Hall's servants quarters is really boring, so this mod seeks to expose her potential, in a manner of speaking. The big attraction here are three multi-part quests to date Eyja and win her heart. However, there is plenty of "eye candy", too! Eyja is younger looking and wears make up. Eyja has roughly 65 new voiced dialog lines, all reconstructed from the original Lynda Carter voice work for Nords in Oblivion. It also includes three new maid outfits, a new dress for the big date, custom hair, a new swimming pool that Eyja visits every day (she wears the swimsuit and has a special wet hair model for that AI package), a fully functional wardrobe (the user can make her wear what they want by placing items in the drawers), a wide variety of clothing and AI packages so you never know what Eyja might be doing at the moment (including a custom animation of her scrubbing the floor), and much more (including a billiards table!). Requires OBSE v14 or later and the Shivering Isles expansion.

Description/Review: Update 3.0 is out! Throughout the course of your time together you will learn more about what drives Ruin and what haunts him, and through numerous multi-path conversations, complex scripted sequences, and challenging strategy-orientated encounters, you will play an integral part in shaping Ruined-Tail's Tale to its ultimate conclusion. This is one of the best Oblivion quest mods released so far. It is a quest mod disguised as a companion mod, featuring an Argonian Battlemage named Ruined-Tail (or Ruin, for short). It includes detailed character conversations and an in-depth storyline. What the player says will directly affect Ruin's development as a character and determine the eventual outcome of his quest. The quest itself is long, detailed, engaging, and further enhances the concept that Ruin is not simply an NPC ally, but more of a definitive companion, with his own personality, needs and fears. The 3.0 version is a complete rebuild of the original mod with a much stronger focus on pacing and plot development. It adds new locations, new scripted story sequences, new dialog choices, new companion features, and much more. TESNexus Mod of the Month for December 2008.

Description/Review: Another character from Baldur's Gate brought into Oblivion, you’ll find the paladin Saerileth in the Bruma chapel. She has been sent by her order to seek and guide a child of prophesy, your character, and will gladly join you on your quests. Saerileth’s beautifully voiced dialog is drawn with permission from the Saerileth Baldur’s Gate mod, where she first appeared, with additional Elder Scrolls-appropriate dialog for the player written by Sulteric Drums. Saerileth offers a straightforward but lengthy romance, a flirt pack, full inventory control, and a range of combat and noncombat options. The mod is lore neutral; while non-TES locations are mentioned, it’s also clear that Saerileth is a planar traveler, and that her travels took place outside of Nirn. As a companion she is similar to Sulteric Drum’s other companion mods (Viconia, Stoker Wolff), and to other companion mods such as Neeshka or Red Sonia. Saerilth is worth trying for the voice work alone. Recommended for fans of companion romance mods and for players looking for a beauty with a sword to help them through Oblivion.

Description/Review: Haunted and hunted, Stoker Wolff waits trapped in a cell in Bruma. He offers a strong sword arm and companionship in exchange for your help. The mod includes a lengthy plot with Romance and Friendship paths, custom armor, and custom voice acting. As a companion, Stoker is roughly comparable to Sulteric Drums' other companion mods (Viconia, Saerileth), with multiple dialogs and a flirt pack on top of solid basic combat options and some noncombat scripts that make him feel more like an independent character. His comments during play may amuse or annoy (he has a great view from back there), but in either case make him more interesting. Stoker’s story will continue and be expanded in the upcoming Underdark mod. If you’re at all interested in a male companion with personality, this mod is highly recommended.

Description/Review: This mod ports one of the most interesting NPCs from Baldur's Gate into Oblivion. It starts out as pretty much just that, porting the character over from the classic CRPG along with much of her dialog. Your character finds her jailed in Bruma; once Viconia is freed, your character gains a companion, and a quest to win her heart. As a companion, Viconia is roughly comparable to Rhianna Redux and other more sophisticated standalone companion mods. Her AI is good, and her ability to learn player-created custom spells is an unusual and fun extra. She also comes with a flirt pack, with responses that change over the course of the romance. The romance quest is long, and while Viconia's dialog is taken from BG1 and BG2, your character's dialog (written by SultericDrums) is appropriate to a character from Tamriel. The quest ends in a confrontation with the Spider Goddess herself; win and Viconia can remain with you; lose and die. A custom spell (ideal for teaching Viconia) is a minor side reward. Overall, a very satisfying romance mod that weaves itself well into Oblivion's story lines. Sulteric Drums also has another companion quest based on a character from Baldur's Gate that we hope to review soon: Saerlith.
