A history of the Order of the Dragon

In the following pages, the history of the glorious Dragon's Order will be described.

The Order was founded as Emperor Tiber Septim's bodyguard and always welcomed only the most glorious and bravest warriors of the Empire as members in its ranks. When the blessed Tiber Septim founded the Empire in 2E 897 and proclaimed a new era, he honored the warriors who earned the most merit, with the creation of the Knights of the Dragon. They moved into a building right on the Green Emperor Way, near the palace entrance and wore their armor with pride and dignity. Meanwhile they were bodyguards at the the emperor's side at official events and public appearances. They established their existence on the Emperor's existence - his word was sacred to them.

When Tiber Septim died, this privilege went to his grandson and heir, Pelagius I. As he was murdered, however, by the Dark Brotherhood during a prayer in the temple a few years later, one doubted the raison d'être of the Order. The Knights of the Order were moved to a castle on the northern border of Cyrodiil. Officially, their office was still in Green Emperor Way, and the highest members of the Order still resided in the venerable house near the palace. But the Knights had lost power politically, because their main army was now so far away from the person whose protection was the reason for their existence, that the morale of the members and the importance of the Dragon seemed greatly weakened.

During the reign of Kintyra I and her son Uriel I especially, the Fighters Guild gained more and more prestige and power, while the Order of the Dragon continued to lose importance.

But at last, in the year 3E 110 during war against the High Elven island province of Summerset, the long-awaited hour of the Order of the Dragon came. When the battle was already almost lost and the loss of the province seemed as good as sealed, the tide turned against the Empire. A violent thunderstorm moved on, and under the protection of the myriad raindrops, the third Champion of Cyrodiil sounded the attack and overran the High Elves' troops in a legendary battle. But fate turned against the political recovery of the Order, because shortly afterwards Uriel, son of Potema (also called Wolf Queen), the Empress Kintyra II, schemed and thus split the Empire. Kintyra was captured and killed, whereupon Potema's brother stood up to Tamriel and got mixed up in the War of the Red Diamonds. The Order of the Dragon, meanwhile, held the brothers Magnus and Cephorus' loyalty. Finally, Uriel proclaimed himself Uriel Septim III. The Order of the Dragon finally regained its long-awaited recognition and was strengthened again in its role as the Emperor's bodyguard.

In the following years, the Order of the Dragon had its much-sung heyday. It was regarded as the main instrument of the Emperor, and the knights who belonged to him were respected citizens in the Imperial court. In that time, it had many artifacts in its possession, and its fame and importance impossibly continued to grow.

Then, however, vigilance was increased in the north, and the Order was stationed in a castle located at a dizzying height, from which one could look far into Skyrim. The vigilance continued for a few years, then a devastating plague broke out within the fortified walls, which carried away most of the Order Knights as brittle wood by a storm. Only a few remained, and the Order of the Dragon lost its meaning after a short flowering, but this time for good. Because - initially provided only as secondary support - the young Order of the Blades quickly gained influence and displaced the Knights of the Dragon completely from the consciousness of the people.

This ends the glorious history of the Order of the Dragon. She saw 6 heroic Champions of Cyrodiil who helped the Empire to honor and glory in legendary battles.
