Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

This quest won't start unless you've received the Khajiit Hand from Ja'kil (see A Friend's Expensive Life). If you have it and talk to Narlana, she'll mention the large death coins and tell you where you can find one. She'll also make you an offer for the hand; if you're interested, you can sell it for 2500 gold or a potion that will tell you where the key to Ja'kil's treasury is.

Once you've dealt with that, go to the Old Fortress; the bandits there will be happy to talk to you, but they don't know anything about a death coin, large or otherwise. They will, however, hand over a tablet. You can take it back to Narlana, or take another look around; you may find an entrance to an older ruin beneath the fortress, but there's nothing there.

So it's back to Narlana. She'll tell you that she's deciphered the tablet, and that it has directions to an old tomb. She wants you to visit Jubin and pick up her supplies (he has them ready, just talk to him), and then it's off to the tomb. Follow the quest marker; when you get there, you'll get a short cutscene, then you'll have a chance to look around. There are two pillars with flames atop them to the north of the tomb; approach them, and you'll get another quest update. Narlana will give you a frost scroll that you can use to extinguish them; when you do, the door will open and you can enter the tomb.

The tomb itself is very basic - just go down the stairs to the room below (watch out for the dart trap in the wall while you're gathering up the loot, though). When you approach the dais, there will be one final cutscene, Narlana will teleport away, and the quest will be complete.

10 Narlana was interested in the hand that I received from the Lord of Moon Sugar and started chatting at the sight. She told of the Great Death Coins and that there is supposed to be one near the old fortress between Kazbai and the Arena. Maybe I should take a look there sometime?
20 The bandits at the Old Fortress voluntarily handed me a tablet. However, there is no trace of a large Death Coin. I could ask Narlana about the tablet, or take another look around the fortress.
30 I found a breakthrough to a ruin of the Old People under the Old Fortress, but there is actually no trace of a large Death Coin here. I should show Narlana the tablet.
40 Narlana wants to go to a tomb with me. It looks like the old tablet I gave her said how to get there. I'm supposed to go to Jubin and get some supplies.
50 I've gotten Narlana's supplies from Jubin.
60 I'm going to the tomb with Narlana.

80 We've finally gotten to the tomb. On the tablet is written: 'If this hero's key had not been burned, every sea in the desert would have known it.' Narlana believes the solution to the puzzle has to be here somewhere. I should look around a bit.

100 Narlana believes the puzzle has something to do with the pillars of fire. She gave me a couple of frost scrolls to direct on the flames.

150 Finishes quest☑ Narlana just teleported away and left me here. She seemed a little upset and mentioned a 'him' whom she wanted to shorten by a head.

Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On PC It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage ODDDesertN03 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
