Bloodmoon talk:Mace of Aevar Stone-Singer
Best Weapon[edit]
It should be noted that this is the best weapon in the game. 70.67.21.93 06:30, 8 December 2012 (GMT)
- "Best" is subjective. Yes, it's a powerful weapon, but we ought not go saying what's "best", because that might open the flood gates to people calling everything "best for X reason". That's just my take on it, though. Eric Snowmane(talk•email) 06:40, 8 December 2012 (GMT)

- Ah, late reply, but as far as I know, this does the highest base damage out of any weapon. 70.66.93.126 19:41, 1 February 2013 (GMT)

- Even later reply, but Stendarr's Hammer from Tribunal has it beat at 100 base damage. The Ebony Arrows of Slaying win the prize for highest damage on any weapon (including enchantments). 75.86.66.200 05:38, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

(←) Since we don't have any concrete and objective numbers about the quality/power of weapons in Morrowind (at least I couldn't find anything, every "best weapon" discussion I've found on the net inevitably ended up being about preferences or assumptions with no data to back it up), I actually went ahead and started a project to find these answers myself. I've started testing weapons in an endgame scenario to rank them according to measured numbers. As it turned out, the Mace of Aevar Stone-Singer is indeed the strongest melee weapon in the game, depending on the weighting of different enemy types it sits at a comfortable ~10% above the strongest competitors (Hopesfire, Gravedigger and Spear of the Hunter, the three of them performed nearly equal).
I didn't expect this at all, as Sunder (4th place, about 80% as strong as Aevar's Mace) should attack much faster with damage per hit that isn't much lower. But, as it turns out, Morrowind doesn't always respect the numbers you see on paper. The damage range you get from charging weapons for a certain amount of time does often not overlap accurately with the animations, and many weapons also have minimum damage that is different from what the tooltip states.
I don't really think "powergaming" stuff like this should be included in the wiki, I just wanted to put these "best weapons" discussions to rest with definitive answers backed by numbers. So yes, the Mace of Aevar Stone-Singer is the overall best melee weapon in the game.
For the curious, the highest source of physical damage available in unlimited quantities are the Dwarven Darts (farmable in Bamz-Amschend), which are an insane ~60% stronger than the mace still. Dwarven Shock Darts and especially Spring Darts & Fine Spring Darts are even stronger, but you can only obtain a handful of them from non-respawning enemies. Geist (talk) 02:16, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
