Walking around Applewatch, you may hear from either Pelena or Cindaia Malumea (or indeed from Gergus himself) that a certain Red Diamond has gone missing. Sure enough, when you ask Gergus he'll admit his beloved horse vanished into thin air one morning and hasn't been seen since. The quest arrow points you to the northwest, and you should follow the road leading up the mountains from behind the windmill.

Eventually, you'll arrive near Boreal Stone Cave and find some tracks in the snow; following them leads you to the entrance of the cave. The cave itself is quite small, and you will find Red Diamond soon enough: he's lying in a pool of blood alongside the rest of the resident ogre's dinner. The ogre itself isn't aggressive unless provoked, although he will attack once you loot Red Diamond's corpse. To avoid a tough fight, do this once he's turned back towards his lair and rush out.

Return to Applewatch and give Gergus the bad news. He won't take it well, but will do his best to hide his feelings. If you reassure him you understand how he feels, or that it's fine to tell the truth, he will admit his misery and reward you with leveled gold. Should you tell him you aren't fooled, he will react badly and stalk back to his house without giving you any reward.
