Ethnic Groups in The Elder Scrolls

There are many races on Nirn that, like real life, all share the similar origins. In the main games, there are 10 playable races, however many ethnic groups belong to these races, as well as additional non-playable races with their own cultures and subcultures. Below is a list of all the various ethnic groups you can find on Tamriel, as well as which race they belong to, and a short history. For more details on a specific ethnic group, race, or culture, see the lore pages linked under each section.

Et'Ada[edit]

Lore:Gods

The et'Ada are the "original spirits",[1] a race of divine beings resulting from the interplay of Anu and Padomay.[1]

Aedra[edit]

Lore:Aedra

The Aedra are original beings that arose from the interplay of Anu and Padomay.[1] They are regarded as the counterparts and opposites of the Daedra, but the distinction originated after their birth, during the creation of the Mundus. The Aedric beings played a leading role in the creation of Mundus (and became bound to the Earth Bones) causing them to commonly be considered the creators of the mortal world.

Daedra[edit]

Lore:Daedra

Daedra (/deɪ.dɹə/ or /diː.dɹə/) are divine beings that did not take part in the creation of the Mundus, and thus retain the full breadth of their power. They have a very real impact on the mortal realm; in one way or another, Daedric influence touches everyone on Tamriel.[1]

Magna Ge[edit]

Lore:Magna_Ge

Magna Ge, also called Magne-Ge, literally the "Children of Magnus", and "Star-Orphans", are a family of divine beings that fled Nirn soon after its creation, following Magnus, the architect.[1] These Anuic spirits left tears in the veil of Oblivion as they retreated to Aetherius, allowing its light to reach Mundus. The Magna Ge are now synonymous with the stars, which they created.[2]

Ehlnofey[edit]

Lore:Ehlnofey

The Ehlnofey, sometimes spelled Elhnofey,[1] of the Dawn Era are a group of et'Ada who, along with the Hist, decided not to abandon Mundus, and instead worked to keep it viable. They remained in the mortal realm and populated it, becoming the progenitors of the modern races.[2]

Hist[edit]

Lore:Hist

Argonians claim that the Hist trees of Black Marsh were the original life forms on Tamriel. The Hist were considered bystanders of the war between the Ehlnofey, but most of their realm was destroyed as the war passed over it.[4] The Hist acknowledge Sithis' role as the "Original Creator".[5]

Early Elves[edit]

These elvish races no longer exist due to splitting off into other races. They existed during the 1st era which is twice as long as all other eras combined, and the Merethic era before time was recorded.
