Introduction[edit]

Deposits of precious ores and gems can be found in many subterranean places across the mainland, although not all have been discovered or exploited. Mines arise where exploitation is ongoing, or has happened however, and the proceeds of those which extract Morrowind's most valuable minerals can form a large part of the wealth of the mine's owner. Eggmining too can prove lucrative, and as a major food source of the Dark Elves, eggmines populated by kwama can be found province-wide. In addition to minerals and foodstuffs, a single Bloatspore mine can be found in the cavern town of Hlersis, with its produce going to paying alchemists.

The East Empire Company has a particular interest in Morrowind's mines, and possesses certain lucrative monopolies on the trade of ebony and glass out of the province. Their office in Old Ebonheart often oversees the sale of mining rights to various individuals, often for more than the EEC believes those rights to be worth.

The mines themselves are watched over by overseers and guards, and worked either by paid employees or slaves. However, in the lands of House Hlaalu, even those salaried miners can find themselves being paid in Hlaalu Company Scrip from time to time - redeemable only at a company store.
