"Dark tidings are upon us. The Crowborne Horror encroaches upon our realm. If it is left alone, it will ultimately pierce the veil and threaten all the inhabitants of Nirn." —Witchmother Taerma[1]

The Crowborne Horror is a powerful Wraith-of-Crows from the Evergloam. In 2E 582, the Crowborne Horror emerged as a serious threat to Nirn, prompting the Witchmother Coven to take measures to avert potential calamity.[1]

It was a being of immense power,[1] able to summon gravestones and control the undead, including spectral spiders and wraiths.[2][3][4]

History[edit]

Witchmother Taerma

The Crowborne Horror emerged as a potent threat to Nirn in 2E 582. Its manifestation coincided with Nocturnal's Summoning Day on the 3rd of Hearth Fire. As dark feathers, believed to be manifestations of the Evergloam, began to appear on creatures throughout Nirn, the Witchmother coven, dedicated to venerating Nocturnal,[1][5] and cooperating with the Impresario,[6][7] sought the aid of an adventurer. Under the guidance of Witchmother Taerma, the adventurer collected the cursed feathers to craft an effigy resembling the Crowborne Horror.[1][8][9] The effigy, once fashioned, required an embuement of energy from the Evergloam in order to lure the Crowborne Horror into a subrealm of the Evergloam known as the Garden of Shadows. This process was orchestrated to prevent the creature's direct influence on Nirn and to drain some of its power for the coven's undisclosed purposes. Taerma and the adventurer collaborated successfully, managing to draw the horror into the Garden of Shadows. The adventurer repeatedly drew the Crowborne Horror into the Garden of Shadows, ensuring it remained distant from Nirn. Despite these efforts, the creature persisted in returning, displaying a tendency consistent with its nature.[1][10]

Despite successfully preventing the manifestation of creatures on Nirn, the Witchmother coven, skilled in scrying disturbances in the Evergloam, struggled to identify the entity's summoner. Such creatures usually remained within the Evergloam, showing no interest in invading Nirn, making their appearance an anomaly. Witchmother Taerma speculated on a potential link between the manifestation of the Crowborne Horror and Nocturnal's Summoning Day. The 3rd of Hearth Fire was a day when Nocturnal could be summoned to Nirn for an audience. Witchmother Taerma harbored suspicions that the summoning might have unintentionally brought forth more than just the Night Mistress.[1][10]

Weapons and armor inspired by the Crowborne Horror imagery, known as Crowborne Hunter equipment, were known in High Rock. Sergeant Qasim of Evermore praised their meticulous craftsmanship and perfect balance, making them ideal for those desiring a totemic appearance during their hunts.[11]
