What's the point of lock picking perks?

My lock picking is now in the 60's and I haven't trained once for it. I was picking master locks from the moment I found them.

They should have had them locked and unable to be attempted if your skill level wasn't high enough.

Seriously WTF!

I disagree. Although I feel like they could have made Master locks harder, because I too started breaking into everything right away. But not everyone is that good at the minigame, and I hate not being able to at least attempt a hard lock just because my lockpicking level is low.

Then whats the point of having different level locks if you can pick them at any time?

Problem is there's no incentive. No reason to waste perk points on the skill. Makes my decision easier I will admit, but just feel a little robbed.

And I went to all the trouble of installing a master lock.

I have to agree about the perks at least. I never see myself needing to get a lockpick perk.

The perks do seem pretty bad for lockpicking, but the same time, lock picking is so much more fun/challenging than what it was in Oblivion. They need to allow all types of locks to be attemped though, and you break quite a few (dozen) lockpicks when you're first starting out on a master lock at low level. It wouldn't be realistic if you just couldn't attempt master locks and would be a tad unrealistic and very frustrating.

Perhaps they could have scrapped it altogether, or make it so it has better perks, like being able to listen better if people are still up and awake on the other side when lockpicking doors or breaking lockpicks increases chances of waking people up until you unlock a perk for that. I guess every ES game has those skills that most people wont bother to master. I doubt anyone wanted badly to max out security and same thing here.

Nevermind, just read these perks: Golden Touch - Find more gold in chests.
Treasure Hunter - 50% greater chance of finding special treasure.

I am raising my lockpicking now. ><

Gah all the perks are so good, how am I supposed to get them all.

Maybe not, not being able to try... but they should be a lot harder... it's rare if I break more than 4-5 picks on a master lock.

I dunno... it's not a BIG deal, but I question it.

Well as I said I agree it could be hardar, as far as I can tell the dificty has two afects

1. where the right spot is
2. how many "trys" you get before it breaks

the problem is once you get the sweet spots rememberd its just a matter of picking form the four or so spots (Adept has four not sure of master)

Not to offend anyone, heh, I've seen some staggering ineptitude when it comes to picking locks, OP. That's why Bethy added those Perks. I personally don't get it either, because from Obliv. to Fallout and now to Skryim, picking locks is easy-squeezy, but, I can't recall how many times my brother or a friend has recruited me to pick 'that one $&%! lock'.

Skyrim's Lockpicking is far and away the most difficult of the group though, I'll give it that.

IMO

They should make your pick break instantly if you screw up if you do not have the perk

@ Akiraka: Strange but I find Skytim's lockpicking to be way easier but to each his own. Stil not sure how I feel about it being that easy (I have never felt challenged with a lock). I think they adjusted the difficulty so those characters that don't specialise in stealth also has a chance of picking the locks for major treasures in the dungeons. Which is fair I suppose and all of this is just IMO.

I like that you can attempt higher level locks if you are willing to break the picks. And the Treasure Hunting perk is exactly the reason I am putting my perks into lockpicking. It remains to be seen if it is worth it.

Someone should make a poll about whether people prefer Skyrim's to Oblivion's mini game and if they feel it's too easy, should be intresting.

The only problem I can see with Skyrim's system, is that it will get either tedious or boring soon enough, and unlike Oblivion, you can't just use your skill level to auto-attempt lock picking. If you want to open that lock, you've got to pick it manually.
