Which settlement would you, as opposed to your characters, call home if you had the choice? Would you choose the hustle-and-bustle of the cities, or the quietness of the countryside (the Oblivion-crisis notwithstanding)?

Furthermore, where do the majority of your characters prefer to inhabit?

I always find my characters drifting to Anvil, and I think I would do the same. It has all the things I find really charming about a place: the ocean's just a walk away for some of that fresh, salty air; you have the hustle and bustle of a city and all that has to offer; and when you want to escape, the open fields are there waitin' for a stroll or a ride. Plus, the house is pretty fun to decorate.

I'm also super partial to Cheydinhal, though. It's very idyllic, and obviously I would be all too happy to join the Knights of the Thorn. Huzzah!

Well, I may be a s'wit, but even I have boundaries...and they end at "Oooohhhh what a pretty ocean!"

I would say Mir Corrup, if I could find it...

I always felt most at home in Chorrol, but the traveler in me loves Anvil for the beaches, Skingrad for the vineyards and other farmed products, and Cheydinhal/Leyawiin for their diversity (I'd be so curious what the local cuisine would be like..).

But if I was an adventurer, the wizard's tower from the dlc is way too convenient to pass up

I always use the Imperial City as my home base. It's so central to everywhere, and has just about everything. But Chorrol is my favorite place as far as the locale. I just love a good forest!

I mean, I would stay for just the cheeses, but a good competitive wine market certainly helps ignore all the rampant murder and undeath related shenanigans

I've always had a soft spot for Chorrol.

Realistically, the market district of the Imperial City, and specifically the Merchants Inn. Even though I use the excellent Imperial Furniture mod, I don't really enjoy decorating or playing house. In a future playthrough I might explore converting an Ayleid ruin into a player abode, with the Priory of the Nine as a secondary residence. Always thought the forests south of the IC were wonderful, but rather sparse of content in the base game.

With respect to your question about self inserting, a keep along the road between Skingrad and Anvil would be my choice. Halfway between the two most idyllic locations in the game, overlooking and protecting the most glorious stretch of land in the entire series. If such a keep wasn't available, that charming inn along the same road would serve as a nice base to explore ruins on the coast and the interior highlands.
