I am trying to get mid-level training in restoration.

It seems that because of the installation of The Knights of The Nine both characters, (Marz of Bravil and Ohtesse of Cheydinhal) are both dead! They get replaced evidently but do the replacements offer training?

If these do not offer training, where do I get advancement - do I have to keep mashing the buttons like an idiot?

Kinther replaces Ohtesse in Chedyinhal and only offers training from noon until 4pm. He'll likely be down in the living quarters during those hours. Entering the Living Quarters shouldn't count as trespassing if you've talked to the Prophet in Anvil and became a Pilgrim.

Beem-Kiurz replaces Marz in Bravil. He offers training from 10am to noon. It's possible he might continue to offer training from noon till 4pm like Kinther, but I am not sure.

One thing I do know is, they do NOT offer the reference for Master Training. Meaning if Marz and Ohtesse are dead and you have not started the Restoration Training Quest, you will be unable to seek out Oleta in Kvatch to receive training and will have to level Restoration from 70 to 100 yourself.

My level on the sliding scale for Restoration is 49 (Apprentice)

I have located Beem-Kiurz in Bravil but the message coming up states that I cannot proceed with any further training at this level.

I am looking for Kinther in Cheydynhal but he (or she or it), is not around and it gone 12 Noon.

I'm not even at 50, let alone 70 so I am fearing repetitive strain injury!

Any more clues?

My guess is you've already used up your number of allotted training sessions. In a normal game, you can only use Trainers five times per level up.

Kinther is a Redguard male in a Quilted Doublet. If he's not in the living quarters, check the undercroft.

You'll probably have to keep mashing buttons unfortunately, it's just the way the levelling system is. I think it is a shame they put a limit on how many times you can use trainers per level because it results in stuff like this. If you really want to raise the skill and don't mind grinding you can make a really weak resist magic spell that costs almost nothing to cast. Then change the controls so one of the face buttons (X, [], O, △) casts magic. Keep the game on and just keep tapping the button. Also watch television or something when you are doing it so you don't die of boredom.

I must admit, I am getting a little tired of the game now!

I seem to have lost several key characters that are needed to help accelerate levelling due to other parts of the game being completed prior to them being used, such as The Knights Of The Nine.

The game guide suggested that it didn't matter really what order to complete the game so I made a conscious decision to leave the main quest till later, much later, because I didn't want oblivion gates opening everywhere, which is what I was told would happen if I did the main quest first.

I still have the Shivering Isles to do yet, so a way to go before I start the main quest. I just hope it doesn't have too much affect on the remaining characters, especially if they are needed for anything important.
