Hello. I dunno if it is because I am too new or what, but I am unable to get into Morrowind. You see, my first elder scroll game was Oblivion. I loved it, and I love Skyrim. I just can't get into Morrowind. Everyone talks about how it is really addictive and fun, but I can't get into it no matter how hard I try. It is actually quite frustrating. I just want to play Morrowind and get immersed and enjoy myself for hours! Any advice?

As wonderful of a game as Morrowind was, it's very dated when compared to Oblivion and Skyrim. It uses a RNG hit and evade system, rather than kinetic blows with tiered damage modifiers; making it feel less holistic. The characters can be modded via better bodies/related mods, but the game does feel old. It doesn't utilize fast travel, and the characters are mostly text based. It's more difficult to get into now than it was a decade ago.

My advice? Approach it with patience. Really take your time and read, collect goods, sell, explore, and figure out the characters of the game. I feel that one thing Morrowind had on all other games, was imagination. Since the game is generally static, and things don't level with you; there's a feeling of progression in how far into the map you can trek as you grow stronger. There are things that you can find that can provoke a lot of intrigue, that have no explanation or relevance to the plot. That being said, there're are so many easter eggs from Morrowind in Oblivion and Skyrim, that playing it through and revisiting the other games may give you a whole new experience.

Welcome! Morrowind is much more demanding than Oblivion. Reading is fundamantal to dealing with most NPC's. A real notepad and a pen beat the crap out of the unmodded game journal. Try to do anything with a low fatigue bar and you are going to fail. Everything in Morrowind can and will kill you.

Do a few simple things to ease yourself into the game. Alchemy is a good way to turn cheap ingredients into potions that you can sell for a big profit (although making super potions can glitch your game). You can buy Mark & Recall potions and Almsivi or Divine Intervention scrolls to get you out of trouble in an instant. Unlike Oblivion, in Morrowind you can buy as much training as you want, so...
Alchemy profits + training = no frustrating skill grinding.
You can basically level up your character at will.
Also, your character can fly! Buy a windwalking scroll or make a strong potion of levitation and you're off. If you are fast enough, nothing can catch you. The only place you can't levitate is in Mournhold.
Explore! I had Morrowind for five years before I did a single quest. You can't fast travel, but you can take a boat or use a guild guide to go most places safely and quickly. Go to all the urban areas and talk to the merchants. Some have very useful items, spells or enchanted gear that you can purchase. Scouts and savants can add places to your map, if you ask the right questions.
Good luck!

Patience seems to be key. I will have to look at it with new eyes the next time I play Morrowind.

It might take a while for you to discover the right mentality; but when you do, I hope that you become engrossed in the game. :) It's a great one

morrowind hasnt aged well visually (what 10+ year old game has though?) and you might have to play it for a while before you start to warm to it.
Personally, i loved the game but wouldn't be able to play it again simply because for me it was a game of its time and i put in the effort then initially because i didnt have the GTA5s, Dark Souls, skyrims etc on offer as well

My efforts were rewarded but i wouldn't have the inclination now (i have tried twice since subsequent TES games came out and have the xbox GOTY edition so no mods)

everything people have said above is good advice, and if you do want it the gold is definitely there waiting for you

Aspects of Skyrim and Oblivion are beautiful, but even after playing those two a lot I love the look of Morrowind, especially at night. It seems like they handled the skies right.

Frankly, once you get into the game the graphics disappear anyway. All computer games, at least all of the good ones, take place in the imagination.

There are a lot of books and people to talk to, and that takes patience. Only certain topics are different, person to person, so this can go pretty quick after a while. Paying attention to what characters say can be difficult because there is so much repetition, but sometimes only one character in an entire area will give a key piece of information... so listening (reading) carefully, both books and people, can give reward. It can seem like the next area is just more people and books and typically that is mostly true... but there are a few real differences, quests and boons mixed in. There are cheats and exploits but it is safe to ignore them. You can do well in the game without grossly out-of-order items and other boons.

One of the most fun aspects of the game is character creation and development, and numerous factions to join, many of which don't like each other much. Shiny.

I know what you mean, definitely, about the game initially not being a lot of fun. People don't initially like you too much and for the native Dunmer that is an understatement. It feels slow and not very engrossing, with too many directions to go and not much real information mixed in with the volume of text. For me it began to take off when joining guilds and doing enough quests so they begin to like you. There are choices, things to fight, quests, better equipment, level-up strategies... Then starting over again after a half-dozen levels to do those things better from the beginning, or choose a different direction, etc.

Mods can bring a new lease of life to the somewhat dated vanilla graphics of the game, its also possible to improve the combat and other aspects of the game, its great to see the horizon on morrowind for the first time ever!

I recommend the Morrowind Sounds and Graphics Overhaul as a building block for your experience, it includes a lot of mods that I usually install one by one manually, as well as the main graphical mod that you would download it for. Once your world looks nicer, you just need to either get used to the aspects you find disagreeable, or get mods to improve them.

Patience is a virtue seems to apply here as aforementioned by other forum users, once you reach a high enough skill in the combat style of your choice (I find you start to be effective at around level 30, but results may vary) you will start to enjoy the game more as you will feel more capable of dealing with threats.

Good luck, use UESP if you get stuck on any quests and have fun :)

I remember the first time I played Morrowind (years ago) I had a lot of difficulty with it due to my cheap equipment. There are a lot of very good weapons and armor lying around in the game, though most of it is not immediately obvious. Scoring a powerful weapon, especially early on, can make a huge difference. I beat Morrowind for the first time only after I acquired Skull Crusher, which suddenly made everything a lot easier!

Other than that, a new character will find themselves drowning in Soultrap scrolls and cheap soul gems. A decent money-making strategy is to use the scrolls to fill the gems, and trade them for better equipment or money. You'll usually end up with a Soultrap scroll or two from any smugglers' cave and the soul gems are just about as common.

If you have money problems in the beginning:

I usually start the game with finding the corpse of Processus Vitellius, a tax collector, not far from Seyda Neen. Meanwhile there is a dumbass who falls down from the sky when he used those scrolls of Icarian Flight. He has an enchanted sword which can be a good start as a weapon. After doing the quest of Processus Vitellius, you will be rewarded for a 500 gold. And then I go in Arrille's tradehouse, and do the quest of Hrisskar to find Fargoth's hiding place. I never give him those septims though, I just take it from the hiding place, and enjoy the gold.

You can also steal everything at the start when you create the character in the Census office. There is a pretty expensive thing in the office of Socucius Ergalla, on the shelves (a platter around 650 value) that you can steal, and drop it instantly. The guard will catch you but will only warn you. You can then pick it up again from the ground and they will no longer bother.

This is already around 1k septims of starting money that you can start investing into ingredients to make potions and sell them for more money.

If you feel like being a real scumbag, (most of my characters are real scumbags), you can then go to Balmora. The streets are full of crates you can empty and noone bats an eye. Then there are 3 shops.

Here's the procedure:

You go into the first shop and sell him everything you have on you, except for your weapon, and armour(if you're a mage you can sell those too). Then proceed to kill him and take back everything, and also take everything that's in the shop.

Now go to the second shop, and repeat.

Now go to the third shop and repeat.

Leave the Khajiit shopkeeper for the last, because he has the most gold.

Now go to Caldera and sell everything to the Creeper. It may take a couple of turns to carry everything there, but I think it's worth the gold.

That should be way more than enough to start the game. You won't really have a bounty because noone saw the murders. You might get a bounty of 120 for the 3 assaults, but guards just ignore that completely until a point. Besides, if you see a guard running towards you, just drop everything you stole out of your inventory, and pay him the fine, you should have more than enough gold for that. Then you can pick up everything again and continue with your business.

On the other hand, if you don't want to rely on small inaccuracies with how the game handles these crimes, then early on you may really have a hard time. Everything is damn expensive. One other thing you can do is go to Ald'ruhn. There are guard towers and inside them, complete sets of armours that are used by the guards. Those are pretty poorly protected(1 guard in each tower), so it should be no problem to steal them. It's a decent medium armour, for a start, and you can also sell it.

I haven't played Morrowind in ages so I apologize if I mistyped the name of a place or character.
