So I killed the CHUDS, no problem and came up with Dharma only to find the townsfolk and more CHUDs waiting, so I killed them. Then I was feeling a bit bloody, so I went after the shop keeper and the hotel owner. I killed the shop keeper when she tried to run, the other guy got away.

Somewhere in there I got a ~150 bounty. No murder went into my journal for killing the shop keeper, so was it because I accidentally shot arrows into Darma once or twice? I don't remember getting fined for hitting friendlies in fights before (just murders), but I could be wrong.

Another possiblitiy is that it is a trespass. I walked into the Chorrol fighters guildhouse to talk to the blacksmith about Weatherleah just as Vilena Donton was walking out at the end of the business day. I got locked inside with the blacksmith for the night, but she didn't call the cops.

Any ideas?

You probably should've reloaded as soon as you noticed the bounty. You're on the PC, so you can just open the console and scrub clean your criminal deeds.

If you're a fighter's guild member, you wouldn't have been fined for trespassing. If you aren't one, then yeah, that might be it.

The fine for trespassing is 5 gold. Assault is 40. A stolen horse is 250. Murder is 1000. Theft...depends on how much you stole. Did you steal anything while in either place, maybe even accidentally?

I wasn't playing like a bad guy (except for trying to kill off everyone in town). I joinied the Thieves guild and stole my $1000 special jobs limit all at once at the start of the game, but that was long past and I hadn't done any special jobs yet. I found out I had a fine when I was stopped from accessing the church alter after dropping Dar-Ma off. I fast traveled to Cristoph and paid the 1/2 fine. It was too high for nomal petty stuff, and too low for murder. No horses were ridden/stolen. I had not joined the Fighters guild yet.

Very odd. I may have to replay Hackdirt from a saved game and see if I can reproduce it.

Thanks for looking up the fines.

Mystery solved

I went back and killed the last two guys, the innkeeper and the friendly guy who helps with the quest. I fought both white-haired underground Brethren and some dark-haired Brethren who attacked me coming out of the church. I racked up a 120g in assault charges @40g each from the Brethren, and then another when I killed the fleeing innkeeper (but not any when I killed the helpful guy. I was using a sneak attack with a bow-two shots).

The combination of person and place needed to get a fine is not clear. All of the Brethren were attacking me at the time (as far as I can tell). I also picked up several murders in Fort Ontus after they turned into black-robed necromancers and started attacking me on sight (this is par for the course... it happens in Silorn when going after Falcar, too).

It doesn't matter for my character...this time.
