I was wondering if any of you use any rules of your own in the game. Ie like no murder or not going to particular places or not playing expansions etc.
I have a rule-list myself. I wondered if others have so too.

No killing the Sewer Rat at the end of the sewers. As one of the few non-hostile rats in Cyrodil, he must be treated with proper respect.

How interesting! I have considered something similar. What a great idea!

Depends on the character (I can see this response being overly used, if others reply). Good people have honourable rules, or those good neutral characters do not, they must think of the best way to solve a problem, regardless of others. Some characters have attachments to certain NPCs or races, some hate all members of a certain race, the possibilities are almost endless! Evil characters, some of them at least, will do something while causing the most harm to others. That's why most of my 'Evil' characters are daedra worshippers (Dark Daedra) or psychotic mages/warriors/assassins, so they have a reason to just harm others, there are minor rules as well, don't eat a certain food etc.

Exactly as Emzi said, my rules for each game vary. I had an Argonian assassin who would never harm a fellow Argonian. My Bosmer druid only killed animals out of necessity, preferring to instead calm the wild beasts with Kyne's Peace and only hunting when she need to eat. One necromancer I had fervently wanted t increase her necromancy skills, so she raised every single corpse she found to do her bidding. And my Priestess of Mara refused to commit the sin of murder, instead using Restoration and Illusion to protect herself and her followers while they dealt with any attackers.

I don't really have any rules thay apply to all my characters, each individual has unique rules I play by.

I have a giant and sometimes irrational rule list. I'd post it here but I'm afraid of ridicule. XD

Like Emzi said. It depends on the character. I play my characters according to how I see their personality, background and morals (or lack thereof). As for hard and fast rules that apply to all my characters regardless of who they are; I have a few. One for instance is no just taking things from outdoor containers unless I can do so properly undetected.

I give Biene Amelion all of her grandfather's armor, and from ?Desolate Mine (troll infestation) I take doofus' armor back to his mommy at the Chorral FG. I also pretend to adopt Pumpkin every time I go to Rock Milk Cavern.

I think the only major rule I try to follow is "Don't take anything laying around that does not respawn unless it is unique."

This means no going into Chorrol's Fighters Guild and getting a Fine Steel Longsword and Silver Shortsword off the Guildmaster's weapon rack.

No going to the Leyawiin Guild and getting a near-complete set of Steel Armor.

No taking the Alchemy Apparatuses of the Mage's Guild Shelves (the ones in the glass cabinets respawn and are fair game) and selling them back to the Guild.

If it's a common item I can get from a respawning source later, I leave it where it is. If I didn't follow this rule to some degree, every location I go to would look naked when I revisited them.

Also I don't read Skill Books and try to never pick up any book in case it happens to be one and I read it by accident.

There's a stat that records the number of Skill Books you've read, if I read one I'd be compelled to read them all. Keeping the stat at 0 is much easier.

To build upon PJ's point about not taking certain items, adding an element of roleplaying that prevents you from taking items that aren't yours (even if it doesn't count as stealing) is certainly one way of adding a bit of added difficulty to the game.

Further roleplaying elements can both make a replay more enjoyable, and be constructed to add great difficulty or depth, such as having a particular set of motivations or goals in-mind, and a set of principles, or rules, that guide your play from an in-world, in-character frame of reference.

As a side note, adding realistic sleep does a lot to slow the pace of the game down, something which I find that Oblivion and Skyrim can benefit from.

I conserve my Athletics for the first five or six levels, which means a lot of walking through the woods/caves/ruins. The game loses a lot of emotional content after I start running around.
