If there's an obvious, well-known way to get this game to run without crashing that I'm too stupid to find, please share it. Otherwise, see below for a list of everything I've tried...that I remember.

Did you try deleting the .ini file? Are you using the same save each time or does it crash even on a clean save?

Guess it's too late to recommend an upgrade to 10, unless you wanna . I've found it runs Oblivion better than even Vista.

I deleted the .ini file in my documents. I've tried with multiple new saves. Most of the crashes occur during cell transitions, especially outdoors.

I downloaded my free copy of Windows 10 to a disc, and I'm not going to put it on my current hard drive. I'm not going to use it until new and amazing games start coming out that require it, if that ever happens.

Have you tried turning off the music?

For some odd reason, having the music playing would cause Oblivion to freeze up after a few minutes on my XBox 360s. You might be asking yourself "How can that possibly apply here?"

I asked myself that same question when I encountered this very same problem across two or three different XBoxes and two different editions of the game. Change the console hardware: same problem. Install the Game of the Year version instead of the Collector's Edition? Same problem. Version 1.0 to the last official patch? Still there! In each and every case, turning the music off kept the game from crashing. I dunno why, as this defied sensibility.

Now it's crashing when I spend too much time outside or when I get too close to an Oblivion gate and the weather changes.

I just want to play the game...

I only use OBMM, but it doesn't even matter because it acts the same with or without mods.

I guess I could try disabling all sound and see what happens.

I tried one last thing.

Installed Oblivion and the add-ons from discs.
Reinstalled OBMM and added a few other things.

After a little over 5 hours, the game has crashed only twice.
Both times when I fast traveled within minutes of launching .

Should an install from disc make a difference?

I have an AMD Radeon HD 7850, and I'll easily admit it's the most problematic graphics card I've ever used, but I just can't justify spending money on an upgrade right now. It's probably the weakest component to my setup, too, and definitely the first thing I intend to replace when I can.

Other specs:
i5-2500K 3.30GHz CPU
8GB Kingston DDR3 RAM (with room for more)
Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 motherboard
