Here's a challenge!

Can anyone tell me how to create an enchanted piece of apparel or a spell that will increase my Mercantile skill.

What would I need in the way of clothing to enchant and what soul gem to use?

You first need to be able to cast a "Fortify Skill" spell or have such an effect applied on your character via an ability.

Any effect will do. You get access to one Fortify Skill effect, you get access to them all.

Simply equipping something with a Fortify Skill enchantment will not unlock the effect for spellmaking.

Something like having the Skeleton Key will work though.

You can also visit certain Doomstones at night to receive a Greater Power with a Fortify Skill effect.

Someone on this forum really loves the Tower Doomstone a little too much (he'd probably marry it if he could), but it is one of the easiest Doomstones to get to being south of the Waterfront District and west of Fort Homestead.

Once you have a Fortify Skill spell you can start crafting spells.

My favorite is:
"Handshake of the Legendary Haggler"
Charm 100 points for 5 secs on Touch
Fortify Mercantile 100 points for 5 secs on Self
Requires a Restoration Skill of 50

To enchant something all you need is access to the effect and a filled Soul Gem.

Grand Souls are the largest size possible and makes the strongest enchantments. However the strongest you can make a Fortify Skill enchantment is only 10 points.

Hey PJ,

Can you give me the heads up on how you created your Legendary Haggler spell?

*head slams onto desk*

There is nothing special about the Legendary Haggler spell.

I got the "Captivate" Spell during the Bravil Mages Guild Recommendation Guest.
This unlocked the Charm effect for spell making.

I got the Fortify Skill effect through obtaining the Skeleton Key.

I went to the Paxographical Center in the Arcane University and used the Altar of Spell Making there to slap the two effects together into one spell.

Since the Fortify Skill effect costs more than the Charm effect. My custom spell is classified under Restoration instead of Illusion.
