I've had this discussion quite a bit with my fellow friends who are TES junkies, and we all come to the big question...are you REALLY the Nerevarine, or a figurehead used and influenced (and assisted) by Azura to head off catastrophic events?

Now all the trials you are supposed to go through do mark you as the Nerevarine..but what if Nerevar himself was just a figurehead used by Azura the same way? After all, she does have an impressive track record when it comes to meddling in the affairs of mortals. It is entirely possible, from the immortal perspective, that the entire title of Nerevarine and Nerevar is just a tool to get a job done (The deposing of Dagoth Ur, and possibly the other mortal gods.)

What say you, my friends?

Yes. You fulfilled the prophecy and in ES that's enough to make you something. The Emperor sent you there because he found your potential to become the Nerevarine. And really, none of that other stuff even matters when it comes into factoring your identity. You are Nerevar reborn, and yes he is just a tool. Everybody is just a tool to the grand scheme of the Elder Scrolls and fate.

Next question please.

Are you really the Nevevarine?

I've spent thousands of hours playing Morrowind and other Elder Scroll games (fine games that they are)
and never once did I think to question what the 'reality' of a character's situation or what it was that motivated them.

It's an f'in' game people.

I'm just going to assume that you're new here, judging by how you are condescending everything I say, and taking a word and going on a little rant, and I'm just going to wait for another sensible person to show up.

Oh and here's a tip....taking a word like 'Soul' and going on a diatribe without any provocation isn't going to win you any friends around these parts, 'friend.'

I thought judgmental, not condescending, was a better description.
A 13 word sentence is hardly a diatribe.

From my own perspective, I never have been the Nerevarine, because I've never played the Nerevarine. I've always just avoided the main quest, which, from what I hear, is a pretty lovely chunk of the game.

It was always my goal in Morrowind to discover independently and fulfill my own prophecy as I played. I never did many faction quests and really just did a lot of side quests and artifact hunting.
It was an excellent time.

EDIT: But... In terms of lore, the hero fulfills the prophecy, and by doing so becomes the Nerevarine in the eyes of the people. You could be a false prophet, or you could be a true god.
That's your choice.

This is true, I just look at it from a more..cosmic point of view. You're merely a tool of those greater...moreso in TES III and IV than V, but still.

And as for your original answer, I don't think anyone would knock you for that...after all, isn't that the magic of these games? you are free to write your own deeds down for posterity. So kudos.

Well, cosmically, sure. Technically mortals are pawns of gods, but also the heroes tend to be the exact opposite as well. Either way, prophecy is prophecy, and unless changed by the will of the hero, it will be fulfilled. So I suppose the idea is that it could either be changed to fit the hero's desires, or changed to aid in the assistance of the greater good.
So in a sense, Morrowind seems to appeal more to two different sets of choices than the other games. It has always seemed as though the options in Morrowind are much more flexible than other games.
And yeah, what you said is true, but I think the Nerevar also has the ability to become one of those greater powers, if they so choose.

So, enough of me thinking out loud, in essence I think my view on this topic sways more toward it differing based on playstyle.

As far as I'm concerned yes, I am Lord Indoril Nerevar reborn. Look, I have the snazzy ring and everything. But the game leaves it open for both interpretations.

In an extreme case, if a character were to murder every NPC in say Suran and then do a "heroic quest" would he automatically be a hero or just a psychotic butcher who did a quest? I'm going to go with the psychotic butcher.

So, if any character does a series of quests that seemingly completes a prophesy, isn't the outcome the same? You still have a regular character.

"My character became Lord Nerevar!" So if my character now murders every NPC in Suran then am I still the great hero? Your character would just about have to become an NPC to do the saintly Nerevar reborn thing.

I'm told that in Skyrim an NPC (IIRC it's Dyvath Fyr) tells your character how a Nerevarine fulfilled the prophesy. The Nerevarine described is not the race/gender of any of the characters that I have ever played. Of course, no one was there when my character "saved the world". Azura shows up and gives me a pat on the head, but no NPC witnesses can tell my story.

The intrigue and politics of Morrowind are devious to say the least. It is not unlikely that your character is merely a pawn of Azura. The Dunmer tell themselves that one of their own defeated this great evil. A prophesy is replaced by a useful myth. As such, none of my characters are Nerevar reborn and they really don't need to be for the Eldar Scrolls lore to continue.

True statements. I should clarfiy in that my character is Nerevarine, but he only wears the title for show. (Especially since my headcanon for him extends far beyond Morrowind, into Oblivion and Skyrim)

You put the point I was trying to bring out into different words. As far as mortals are concerned, sure, you might be the fabled reincarnation. But as far as the gods and Daedra are concerned, it is entirely possible you are simply a pawn in their games of chess.

Never thought about it like that. But I do agree, that to the mortals of Morrowind, you would be the Nerevarine, considering you did everything their prophesy said the Nerevarine would do. But it is possible, that to the gods you are just a tool. Something used to further their schemes.

I would say that, as with so many other things in TES, whether you are the Nerevarine or not is a matter of personal choice for the player. You could easily play a character for hundreds of hours and never go near the main quest. And even if you do the main quest, you could decide that this is all some cosmic coincidence.

Dagoth Ur asks you at the end of the game if you're really the Nerevarine, and you can tell him you're not. In the end, it's up to you.

It seems some people don't comprehend what a "prophesy" is or means, at least not very well. First, I'd like to point out a couple things that have been touched on but largely overlooked. You do wear "Moon-And_Star", the ring that only Nerevar could wear without it killing any other mortal, so that right there pretty much proves beyond doubt that you are indeed the (re)incarnation of Lord Indoril Nerevar. Second, the Elder Scrolls are not "tools of the gods" as even the gods and daedric lords and princes are bound by them. The Elder Scrolls are the supreme authority, not Azura or any other "divine" being. The Scrolls foretold that Lord Indoril Nerevar would be reborn and "save" Morrowind (condensed version of the lore and prophesy). If it doesn't come to pass, then it's really not much of a "prophesy", now is it? Or, it's a "false prophesy" and since a "true prophesy" implies predeterminism and a predestined outcome that cannot be changed, then according to just about everything in-game related, you are playing the (re)incarnation of Lord Indoril Nerevar that is destined to fulfill the prophesy. Of course, the one real problem I have is that TES broke their own lore when they changed the story, effectively rendering the Elder Scroll prophesy in Morrowind false. None of the things that the Nerevarine was supposed to actually accomplish according to the prophesy actually came to pass, so the Elder Scrolls are pretty broke based on Oblivion lore and beyond.

You get to choose, actually. The decision is yours. As the Wisewoman says you are only someone who may become the Nerevarine. The Dunmer people believe you are, but what you believe about yourself matters, too. I always put that I am a self made hero.
