So I was just leaving the courtyard of fort Moonmoth on my way to accomplish that scrap metal quest for the Imperial Legion, and there was a stone-grinding-against-stone sound when I almost passed the gates. I was wondering if it's a bug or possibly an Easter egg of some sort. Has anyone else encountered that?

There's no such sound which specifically plays in that location. Most likely it was some form of random sound glitch.

Are you sure it was stone-on-stone? What I do hear occasionally (although fairly rarely) are random inventory sounds, the type you hear when you pick up or drop items. These happen randomly and unpredictably and seem to be caused by some type of harmless glitch. This could be what you heard.

If you're running mods, it might have been something added by a mod for some reason. But it's definitely not some type of Easter egg in vanilla MW (sorry!).

When I played, I often randomly heard the sound of a sheep bleating. No discernable source.

The "sheep bleating" sound is one of the background environmental sounds in the Ashlands and Red Mountain regions. It's not associated with any animal or creature in particular; it just plays randomly from time to time when you're in those areas. In the Construction Set the Sound ID is "howl7"; if you listen to it it's not quite a sheep bleating, but it's pretty close. And, yes, I always wonder where the heck the sheep are when I wander through those regions as well! :D

Are you talking about this sound:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjjKSJFz68s
That there be the call of a silt strider! The sound plays randomly in the wilderness to simulate "sure they wander, but you never see them haha"

Or is this a different one you are referring to?

I thought I heard a sheep sound when I was near Shishi traveling to the Urshilaku camp. Definitely didn't sound like a silt strider.

@Jormungandr: Nope, that's not it. The "sheep sound" can be heard at 0:05 here:

The moan which comes after it at 0:11 is a different "howl" and has nothing to do with the "sheep".

The closest stone on stone sound I could imagine at Fort Moonmoth could be the door to Arkngthand where you need to turn the valve to get through the door. I doubt you could hear it from that far though. Who knows, sound glitches would happen all the time in Morrowind for me lol.

I actually heard this sound recently. I was starting the pilgrimage of the seven graces, so I started from Balmora. I used a Divine Intervention spell to get me to Fort Moonmoth. I equipped my BoBS, and left the fort entrance heading to the Fields of Kummu. That's when I heard it. I'm thinking it could be the door to Arkngthand.
