For me the #1 most egregious butchering of a story was done by the movie Eragon.

I love the book series, and the one thing I liked about the movie is it got me to read the book. I liked the movie the first time I saw it before I had read any of the books. However that changed quickly

Seriously. This was a totally different story than the book. It just had The name and some characters slapped on it.

Some of the worst mess ups:
1. WTF is with Durza and the Smoke Dragon at the end. That was just COMLETELY ADDED!!!!!!!!!

2. Eragon did NOT get attacked by Urgals at Deret!!!!!!

3. Urgals are NOT big drunk looking men!!!!!!

4. They took Terim out! Seriously, they took one of the biggest parts of the story out.

5. Eragon DID NOT kill the Ra'zac in the first story this kind of kills the story for the 2nd and 3rd stories

6. They took the Twins out. This also kills the story

7. They completely botched Angela and they took Solembum out. This also kills the story.

8. Arya was not an Elf!!!!

Based on this, and I am sure many other things I forgot, they would have to make an entirely new story to make another movie. Because they certainly can't use the original

end long winded angry nerd rant/

I had read the story before watching the movie. Wow. Wooow...
And I agree, one of the few things they got OK was Saphira. And, I know he doesn't look like he is described in the story, but I liked Brom in the movie, matched his personality more in the movie. I dunno.

I tend not to care. In many ways, a movie not following the original book entirely is a good thing, as it shows some originality with a story you've already read: The only film I'll constantly troll for breaking the script so badly was the Goblet Of Fire, because it essentially wrecked the entire series of films for not doing what it was supposed to (showing more complexities in Sirius, increasing the amount of in-depth characters that will appear in later films etc.).

Darren Shan's "Cirque du Freak". Butchered? Minced.

The Last Airbender

Good children-preteen story turned into a hot mess of "I thought visual effects made the movie?", "It makes sense to make a lighthearted story into serious, non-comedic business!" and "let's cram as much plot progression into the movie as possible...what? No we don't need to worry about the characters becoming one dimensional because of the lack of depth! Go get my coffee fool!"

Percy Jackson and the Olympians - a great book that was absolutely destroyed by the movie. They changed half of the plot, for one, and took out about 90% of the content.
