TES3 Mod Runtime edit check[edit]

Wrye, please take another look at the June 27 change to Tes3Mod:Runtime:Startup. I believe that the information listed was correct (the list mentioned is in the ESP/ESM, not the saves). Proof of concept: Make a trivial mod based on Morrowind.esm, then alter byte 0x162 of the esp and load it in the game; the error message should appear. My tests were performed with an old version of 'excuseme.esp'. I would have formatted the response differently, but wasn't sure what to do with the text on re-ordering.

Ah, okay, missed that you were talking about esp/esm dependencies. Go ahead and add it back if you're sure.
Note: It's best to make changes after signing in -- I give more credibility to logged in editor than to anonymous ones. Also, please sign comments (talk pages only, not articles) by typing --~~~~ at the end of the message -- it will be converted when you save. --Wrye 15:46, 28 June 2007 (EDT)
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. --bent_knight

Morrowind Mods[edit]

Hi there Wrye,, sorry for my late reply (I was on holiday,,Its summervacation now in The Netherlands) Anyway, I read your comment on Morrowind and I'm glad you posted it. I,ve never give it a thought about mods for morrowind, especially the ones who make it more realistic qua graphics and physics, because thats the only downside now compared with the eyecandy of Oblivion. oh and my elders scrolls games are all running on the pc, so modding is no problem. So Once again thank you for your suggestion,, I will certainly try some mods you proposed. :)

Kind Regards --Geniepert 19:20, 11 August 2007 (EDT)

Archive Link Problem[edit]

Just thought I'd let you know, the link on this page that should go to User talk:Wrye/2007-07 actually goes to User talk:Wrye/2007-01. --GuildKnight (Talk) contribs 19:16, 2 September 2007 (EDT)

Fixed. Thanks! --Wrye 00:22, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Videos[edit]

Hiya Wrye. I noticed that you run the Fun Oblivion Videos page. Do you know how to capture videos? Is it some sort of specific program/function of Oblivion, or just a video screen capture thing? Could you suggest a program to use? Thanks. =) --Saruuk 23:22, 13 September 2007 (EDT)

I only link to what I think is fun -- I don't do any of it myself. But I imagine that most people use FRAPS. --Wrye 01:05, 14 September 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for your advice, but...[edit]

Wikipedia has similar guidelines, but their articles have a lot of links. Shouldn't we have the same standard here? Also, not all the links you reverted were irrelevant, were they? --Mankar Camoran 09:05, 26 September 2007 (EDT)

Actually, I got this linking idea after looking at some of Wikipedia articles. I think they are wonderful. What is your opinion on this? --Mankar Camoran 09:24, 26 September 2007 (EDT)
Wikipedia also has a lot more articles. You could pretty much link every word in a typical Wikipedia article and not get many red links. But obviously, they don't do this, as it would be really distracting. At any rate, the key word is always "relevant". It may have been a little overzealous reverting the entire edit, but going through them all individually would be a bit of a pain, considering just how many of them there were. Also, there's generally no need to link to the same page more than once within an article or section of an article. Just because the word "Bosmer" appears 3 times doesn't mean it has to be a link every time. The first time is sufficient, if you link to it at all. (This is a borderline irrelevant case - it should only be linked if it's some how beneficial to know more about Bosmers when reading the article.) --TheRealLurlock Talk 10:23, 26 September 2007 (EDT)
Thanks. That was very helpful. I will keep that in mind. --Mankar Camoran 12:06, 26 September 2007 (EDT)
Discussion moved to UESPWiki:Community_Portal#Cluttering_Links. --Wrye 14:06, 26 September 2007 (EDT)

Walking Encyclopedia[edit]

Thanks for merging the recent discussion on mods into the existing one, and apologies for duplicating an existing topic. The links at the top-right don't seem to impinge on my brain for some reason so it's lucky you're a walking encyclopedia of knowledge about the site and can link things up. That said, what do you actually think on this? I've seen the odd link to one of your mods but that seems to be the only time anyone has really linked to a mod that fixes a problem rather than one that enhances something. I'm suggesting (in effect) a wiki documentation for the UOP. Should we do that? --RpehTalk 15:53, 4 October 2007 (EDT)

Well, I do try to separate the roles and not let my modding interfere with UESP role. So, checking for "Wrye" in Oblivion and SI spaces... I'm linked to on Shivering:The_Prince_of_Madness, Oblivion:Nature's_Fury, ]Oblivion:Gripes and Oblivion:Spells#Deleting_Spells. So, that's not too bad -- two of those are bug patches, the others are for Bash's spell deletion ability (a very common request/gripe).
Anyway, on the UESPWiki:Community_Portal/Mod_Info_in_Articles page, I agree that UOP should be documented. My patches are small. UOP is huge, much more deserving of (and useful to) mention. (Umm... My patch mods (Knights Patch and Wrye Shivering) are small compared to UOP. Wrye Bash is huge, of course! Humility is a not a vice monkeys suffer from!) --Wrye 16:22, 4 October 2007 (EDT)

Merry Xmas![edit]

GuildKnight says "Merry Christmas!"

And a happy new year!

Hope you have a great holiday! --GuildKnightTalk2me 02:15, 24 December 2007 (EST)
Thanks GK! You caught me working on my Christmas gifts for all the little (and not so little) game players out there! Best wishes and very happy holidays to you as well! Cheers --Wrye 02:49, 24 December 2007 (EST)

Wrye Bash Wishing[edit]

your wrye bash is cool but it need some feature more
i wish you work on possibility of linking lootlists and item leveled lists in bash patch options
for example i have few alchemical mods whichch one of adds goblin's bone ingredient which disappears from goblins' loot during overhaul it's loot in other mod
simply please add it to your wrye bash :)
majaczek 11:56, 14 February 2008 (EST)

I'm not sure what you're asking for... I think that you're asking for inventory change merging, which I've considered, but which is difficult. If you want to continue, you should ask/further explain on the RELZ Bash topic. --Wrye 16:56, 14 February 2008 (EST)

UMP- bugfix mod section for morrowind[edit]

Wrye, I posted this a few weeks back with no reponse, is this (still) worthwhile?

Would it be OK to add an unofficial bug fix section similar to what is done for Oblivion? I am thinking of the following:

Quote: "The Unofficial Morrowind Patch (UMP) fixes almost all of the bugs and problems with Morrowind and its expansions. While the official patches by Bethesda only fixed a couple of dozen bugs, this patch fixes several hundred. The goal of this patch is to make the game completely bug-free (within the abilities of the TESCS)." [1]

The UMP is highly regarded in the community, and fixes a lot of annoyances. I think it would be a great addition to Tes3Mod. There is no contact info given on the site, not sure what needs to be done to get permission. Any thoughts?

Cheers, --BenouldTC 18:15, 16 April 2008 (EDT)

First, you should checkout this discussion if you haven't already. That's the archive of where we were discussing adding UOP documentation. Then, you should probably bring the subject up on the Community Portal.
Second, I'm pretty rusty on my Morrowind stuff, but generally, it seems like a good idea. A few specific thoughts though: I recall that there was a second competing patch (that was less large? maybe it was incorporated?). This confuses the situation somewhat compared to Oblivion (where there is only one mega-patch). That may warrant consideration.
In short, bring the idea up on the community portal to see what the reaction is. If there are no objections, I'd say go ahead. --Wrye 01:49, 17 April 2008 (EDT)

What do you think[edit]

Hi it is Sgt. Geogorath. He haven't spoke before. But time has come. Well what do you think? Am I good enough to join the Patrollers? Because I'm not sure if i must go to the nominations. So if you judge something inform me. Lord Geogorath 16:26, 19 April 2008 (EDT)

All patrollers must go through the nominations process no exceptions. --Volanaro 16:30, 19 April 2008 (EDT)
Not to mention that all patrollers are expected to meet the nomination guidelines. And that means meet all five guidelines, not just one. A nomination attempt when you fail to meet four of the five guidelines is just going to waste everybody's time, so please don't. --NepheleTalk 16:46, 19 April 2008 (EDT)
No. You're not qualified. --Wrye 18:15, 19 April 2008 (EDT)

Outdated Tech[edit]

Hey, I just had a question: what's with the "Outdated tech" note on the main page? Does that mean that more effort will be going to Tes4View rather than fleshing out the information in these pages? Just wondering... Sythe 09:04, 29 May 2008 (EDT)

I'm not sure how that note is unclear. You have Tes4View, don't you? If not, then get it and play around with it and the meaning should be clear. --Wrye 16:05, 29 May 2008 (EDT)
Yes, I do have Tes4View, and obviously there is a lot of overlap in the information it provides. I guess my main question is regarding the "official" status of the mod file format wiki pages. The note is prefixed with the phrase "Outdated Tech" which seems to indicate that these pages have been made obsolete by Tes4View and are no longer the authority for info on the mod file format. But the text of the note says that these pages are "the best public documentation", which seems to indicate that this is not the case. But it also says that Tes4View "provides the most complete and correct understanding". Is Tes4View built off of the information in these pages or from some other source? If there are two "copies" of this information, (one copy in the wiki pages and one that Tes4View gets built from) does information ever get shared between these copies? Should people continue to update these pages with their findings, or should they be documenting them elsewhere? Sythe 18:35, 29 May 2008 (EDT)
I tend to use words precisely. "Outdated" != "Obsolete". "Public" != "Official". "Documentation" != "Understanding". I.e. our documentation is public, but not official (there is no official documentation of the file structure). Our docs are outdated because they don't reflect best current understanding, but they're certainly not obsolete. Tes4View demonstrates best understanding, but doesn't actually document the file structure at all. In short, best resource for potential programmers is our pages + review of Tes4View display.
As far as I know we're the only site with substantial published info on the mod and save file structures. Hence there is no other public documentation. So where did Elminster get the info? The same place Rick, Dave Humphrey, I and others did -- but analyzing esp/esm files.
For users who are new and want to understand the mod file structure, I think that the best approach is to: 1) read through our docs (keeping in mind that some info is outdated), and then 2) review Tes4View's display of info for specific records.
Personally, when I want to make Wrye Bash understand new structures, what I do (already being familiar with docs here) is to look at Tes4View and follow its display info. Then I combine that with some educated guesses about nature of variables and some code that helps me figure out data structures in bash. Finally, I do a test in wrye bash where I extract all instances of the data structure from Oblivion.esm, then rewrite them to a new test mod. Finally, I compare Oblivion.esm and the test mod in Tes4View. If Tes4View says the records are identical, then I figure I got it right.
So, should documentation here continue to be updated? Sure, that would be good. However, it would be a bit of work. For me personally, it's too far down my priority queue for me to take it on. However, if someone else wants to take it on that would be great. If you want to do that, then just drop me a note once in a while and I'll review if I can.
Cheers --Wrye 19:21, 29 May 2008 (EDT)
Thanks for the info. It would be nice if we had an single XML file that described the various fields and data of the format that we could use to generate both wiki and code for tools. The NifTools project does this for their NifLib, but alas, that comes with a whole host of its problems and the devil is always in the details... Sythe 00:17, 30 May 2008 (EDT)

martin and jauffre[edit]

umm, i seem to have misplaced these 2 dudes somewhere between imperial city and leyawiin maybe. so i was wondering if there was a way to check my save game and see where i left them. you seem to be the goto monkey regarding oblivion coding so i thought you might be able to help. even just info on the save format would help because its gotta be there somewhere.

save file format is not the answer. ask on forums for help. --Wrye 20:27, 31 May 2008 (EDT)

Site down?[edit]

Is your site (and the rest of ufrealms) down? Any news on it if it is? Alphax 22:21, 22 November 2008 (EST)

Yep, ufrealms got hacked. Silmarillion (site owner) is working on it. I don't know what status of resurrection is, or how long it would take to repair. (I'm hoping/assuming not long, but we'll see.) In the meantime, Wrye Mash and Bash are available at PES (Wrye Python). You might also google for approrpriate page, and then grab the cache page from google. Several of my mods are also available from PES. --Wrye 00:29, 23 November 2008 (EST)

Template help[edit]

I dont know if you're good with wiki templates, but on my Sandbox page, the Columns template seems to be broken, most likely due to a link, but I can't for the life of me figure out what happened. DaedryonTCE 23:41, 25 December 2008 (EST)

Sorry. Can't help with that. --Wrye 23:43, 25 December 2008 (EST)
