Oblivion Spell Assistant[edit]

Hey there, back in September I made a spell calculator for Oblivion in MS-Excel. I'm not sure where I can upload it to on this Wiki, since the upload only accepts images. I would like to have it hosted on some part of this wiki, free from time limits and the like, and linked to from Oblivion:Spell Making along with Watt's SpellSim. It's actually quite a bit more useful I think. Here's the SaveFile link if you're interested. [1] Ong elvin 21:33, 18 December 2007 (EST)

As you've found out, the wiki isn't really set up to deal with non-image files. And long term I think a fully functional web-based calculator would be the most useful tool as far as readers are concerned. This is a web site, so it's safe to assume that all visitors to the site can view a web-based tool. But we can't really assume that all visitors will be able to handle an excel file (people browsing from library computers, PDAs, non-windows computers, etc.); even those who can handle excel might not want to download a file because of fears about macro viruses or might just think it's too much of a hassle to open up a new application, especially when (from a reader's point of view) there's no guarantee that it's an intuitive or useful tool. It's not a comment upon the quality of your calculator; it's just a comment based upon well-established patterns of what people will and will not do when browsing the web.
In the short term your tool would be better than nothing if it didn't require extra effort to put in place. But from my point of view trying to figure out how to add such a tool to the wiki is almost as difficult as just creating a new web app. Deciding how to add your excel file opens a whole pandora's box of questions: Daveh has been talking for years about setting up a file server at UESP, but hasn't been able to tackle it yet. Comparatively, putting together 1000 lines of javascript/html code can seem pretty easy!
In other words, that's a long-winded way of saying that I don't know what to do with your excel file, either. Sorry :) --NepheleTalk 02:05, 19 December 2007 (EST)
Okay, so file uploads are unlikely to happen. That's cool. I already knew about Macro-virus fears and access to Excel as well. The "might not be useful" shouldn't be a problem, the file's only what, 60kb? It's kinda like "no download wasted, but still useful." Anyway, I think what I can get away with is creating a new section at the top of the talk page where people will find it reasonably easy, and updating the link to a new upload as needed. Ong elvin 03:01, 19 December 2007 (EST)
Oh, and did you download it and give it a try? Feedback would be welcome. Also, when I eventually feel bored, I plan to make spells recognise skills, like they already do with attributes. (ie, type in "Absorb Acrobatics" instead of "Absorb Skill.") Ong elvin 03:04, 19 December 2007 (EST)

Hmm... no response... guess I'll move this to the bottom of your talk page just to make sure you notice it. :P Okay, I've gone ahead and added the link to the talk page and main article as I was thinking of doing. I can move that link to my own talk page if you want, but really I think the way I've done it is fine. If you object to it, that's cool, you're the admin, but at least give me a call if you revert it. ;) Ong elvin 01:01, 1 January 2008 (EST)

adding a few artifacts[edit]

Just wondering if I can add a few more Daedric Artifacts to the Artifacts page of Oblivion. And if I can how do I? — Unsigned comment by 70.48.104.23 (talk)

Yes, some help with adding missing artifacts to Oblivion:Artifacts would be welcome. I'd recommend first reading the discussion at Oblivion Talk:Artifacts#New Criteria to familiarize yourself with the list of artifacts that have been selected for addition to the page. Then you basically need to create the pages. One trick is that the pages you need to create are currently redirects. So, for example, Oblivion:Apron of Adroitness is a redirect; if you click on the link you actually end up at Oblivion:Leveled Items. That is not the page you want to edit; instead, scroll up to the top of the page and you'll see a blurb in small text "(Redirected from Oblivion:Apron of Adroitness)". Click on that link and you'll end up on the page that you want to edit. Click "edit" on that page and fill in the page; use an existing page (for example Oblivion:Azura's Star) as an example of how to fill in the page. I hope that helps. Ask if you have any more questions. Or just try it and see how far you get; other editors can clean up any rough edges that need more work. --NepheleTalk 20:26, 1 January 2008 (EST)

Contributing to the Oblivion Places Redesign Project.[edit]

Dear Nephele,

I'd like to contribute at the Oblivion Places Redesign Project... How do I sign up for it, or something like that? I'd love to write walktroughs for dungeons, because I can level up, train skills etc. at the same time, helping people with possible dungeon prolems. Thanks already!

SwordSlayer

Help with the dungeon walkthroughs would be welcome :) Feel free to add your name to the contributors at UESPWiki:Oblivion Places Redesign Project.
I'd suggest that you start by reading through the guidelines sat Walkthrough information, and look over some of the examples listed there of completed walkthroughs. There are several common mistakes made when starting to create walkthroughs:
  • The walkthrough should not be a step-by-step guide to every specific action. Every player will use a different playing style and will therefore explore the dungeon differently. For example, telling the reader in which order they should open chests is advice that will be ignored by most readers, so why include it?
  • It's best to focus on information that it is not already provided on the article. Items already listed or shown on the map don't generally need to be repeated, unless they are particularly valuable or hard to find.
In other words, less is often better with the walkthroughs ;) Shorter walkthroughs are easier for you to write, and they're also easier for readers to use.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions! --NepheleTalk 19:01, 7 January 2008 (EST)

missing page[edit]

My computer at work uses IE and when i go the to Oblivion: places page all i get is a blank page. just thought you might want to know. — Unsigned comment by Gord (talkcontribs)

Thanks for pointing that out :) Hopefully I just fixed it. It's a problem that occasionally (and unexpectedly) crops up with some of the larger pages on the site: IE stops loading them even though Firefox has no problems displaying them (well, no problems other than the site being slow...). I just forced the site to regenerate the page, which has fixed the problem every other time it's cropped up. And now when I check in IE the page is appearing. Let me know if you're still having a problem (or if you notice any other pages that are always blank). --NepheleTalk 21:19, 9 January 2008 (EST)

Is there an NPC who can bring your lower leveled items up to your current level?[edit]

I thought I heard about this and Im not sure if it's a download because I just bought the Shivering Isles expansion for the 360. — Unsigned comment by Pandabosch (talkcontribs)

I'm afraid not. The only items that change their level once you've acquired them are the Crusader's Relics from Knights of the Nine. –RpehTCE 03:15, 11 January 2008 (EST)

Just wondering...[edit]

So, clicking around for fun, I saw on here that there's been a completed nomination for a Longsword8, but his nomination and all is not on the completed nominations page! Nor is it in with the current ones. I was wildly curious if it oughta be on the completed nom. page. Sorry to bug you! Muthsera 10:50, 15 January 2008 (EST)

Perhaps because there has never been a UESP editor by the name of Longsword8 and there has therefore never been a completed nomination for such an editor ;) On the other hand, there is an editor named Lordsword 8, and his completed nomination exists right where it is supposed to be, on the completed nominations page at UESPWiki:Patrollers/Nominations/Completed#Lordsword 8. The link on Daveh's page (at User talk:Daveh#New Patrollers) no longer works because since that message was posted, we began moving completed nominations from UESPWiki:Patrollers/Nominations to UESPWiki:Patrollers/Nominations/Completed. There wasn't too much point in updating the links on Daveh's page, however, since he had already responded to the requests. --NepheleTalk 12:16, 15 January 2008 (EST)
Oh, you know what I meant. But when I looked at the completed ones, I didn't see that one. Sorry. Muthsera 21:13, 15 January 2008 (EST)

Bloodmoon Categories[edit]

Hey Neph, I was just running through the wanted categories that NepheleBot created and I noticed that Bloodmoon-Weapons-Long Blades One Hand, Bloodmoon-Weapons-Long Blades Two Hand, and Bloodmoon-Weapons-Longswords are all on the list. I made the first two without noticing the third, but now that I've checked it out it looks like it's possibly redundant. Everything listed at Bloodmoon-Weapons-Longswords is also already listed at Bloodmoon-Weapons-Long Blades One Hand. Is there a reason for the Longswords category, or would you prefer to shuffle a few things around? Either way, just let me know and I'd be happy to fix it up ;). --Eshetalk15:14, 17 January 2008 (EST)

Well, it's mainly a mirror of what I did for the Oblivion weapons. Since the one-handed blades category in Oblivion covers longswords, shortswords, daggers, as well as miscellaneous other weapons, I thought that having categories containing only the specific weapon types would be useful, as well as the more general category that contains every one-handed blade in existence. Which should allow the reader to pick the group that's most appropriate for his/her interest.
With Morrowind and expansions there isn't quite as much need for all the categories, especially since daggers and shortswords are governed by a separate skill (Short Blade) from longswords (Long Blade), and therefore there are already more categories. But still, based on Morrowind:Base Weapons, there are more than just longswords in the one-handed blades list (sabers, broadswords, katanas), and there are consistent differences in the stats for the different types of blades (longswords appear to always have speed=1.35, for example; the others don't).
So, long story short.... Yes, my feeling is it's worth keeping the categories. They may be nearly identical in contents in Bloodmoon, but for consistency with what (presumably) will be done later for Morrowind, and with what's already been done for Oblivion, I think it's best. BTW, thanks for creating all of those categories for me :) I remember (somewhat painfully) how long it took me to create all of the Oblivion ones.... --NepheleTalk 16:34, 17 January 2008 (EST)

Sadrith Mora/Wolverine Hall[edit]

Since you made the move (and plus since you are active at the moment) Should all the people who are in Dirty Muriel's have their "home city" changed to Wolverine Hall? Dirty Muriel's seems more part of Sadrith Mora than the Wolverine Hall, but currently they are on the Wolverine Hall page. Jihiro 00:57, 20 January 2008 (EST)

The information on the NPC pages should be consistent with the place page on which the NPC is listed. I'm not the best person to ask, though, on the question of whether Dirty Muriel's really should be categorized as Wolverine Hall or Sadrith Mora ;) I was just trying to get the tables and associated redirects put in place, and was relying upon other people's work to determine the NPC locations. Two (semi-) independent tables listed Dirty Muriel's under Wolverine Hall, so that's where I put them all. If you want a more authoritative answer to the question of where they belong, you may be better off asking the question on the Wolverine Hall talk page, or asking TheRealLurlock or DrPhoton (the disadvantage being that neither of them are likely to answer until Monday). Or you could just use your own judemgent and do what you think is best ;) Sorry I couldn't provide a more complete answer, but I'm one of the least knowledgeable Morrowind editors (there's a reason I haven't added that box to my userpage!) --NepheleTalk 01:22, 20 January 2008 (EST)
Dirty Muriel's is sort of a borderline case. On the one hand, it does not have "Wolverine Hall" in the location title, and it is located outside of the fort's walls. On the other hand, the entrance IS within the "Wolverine Hall" external cell, and somewhat divided from the Telvanni-dominated part of the city. It is also built in Imperial style, and home to a Thieves Guild branch, which is an Imperial faction, rather than a local Dunmer faction. In this way it does have more in common with Wolverine Hall. I'd lean towards including it within Wolverine Hall, even though it's not directly connected to it. Technically, Wolverine Hall is part of Sadrith Mora itself, but we've separated them on this site to provide a more clear distinction. (It also mirrors the arrangement of the other Imperial forts: Buckmoth Legion Fort is distinctly separate from Ald'ruhn, as is Moonmoth Legion Fort from Balmora. Hawkmoth Legion Garrison in Ebonheart, Fort Darius in Gnisis, and Fort Pelagiad in Pelagiad are much more integrated into their parent cities, and are thus harder to separate.) --TheRealLurlock Talk 12:39, 22 January 2008 (EST)

Oppose Vote[edit]

I understand everybody has their own vote for a featured article but instead of going against this article, let us help eachother improve the article. If it is so badly written why don't we help fix it? — Unsigned comment by Matthewest (talkcontribs)

My vote against Roleplaying as a featured article wasn't based upon the article being poorly written (even though it could use a huge amount of rewriting and general cleanup). Rather, my vote was based upon the fundamental premise of the article, which is something that can't be fixed: an article listing individual editors' personal opinions about preferred ways to play the game will never be an objective, encyclopedia-style article. As for fixing it, I have already put a huge amount of effort into working on that article, and I continue to do so every day, as I patrol the countless edits that get made to it. I'd rather be putting my time into improving the articles on the site that I personally find interesting and useful. --NepheleTalk 22:04, 21 January 2008 (EST)

Morrowind GOTY Edition - Construction Set[edit]

I'm looking into buying Morrowind for PC after thoroughly enjoying Oblivion, but I've read conflicting reports on the internet about whether it has the Construction Set included. This is one feature I really want to use so it would seriously affect my descision. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I'm new to edition discussion pages on Wiki's! Alexsutton 15:50, 22 January 2008 (EST)

Sorry to but in, but it definitely does have the CS. I bought that exact edition and got four discs: Morrowind, Tribunal, Bloodmoon and the CS. –RpehTCE 15:55, 22 January 2008 (EST)
From what I've been told, the Construction Set was included in every release of the game with the exception of one version (non-GOTY) which was bundled as a freebie with some video cards. (A friend of mine ended up with that version.) Any store-bought version should have it, as well as any official internet sale. (Unofficial sales such as repurchases from Ebay or the like are not guaranteed.) --TheRealLurlock Talk 16:05, 22 January 2008 (EST)

Thanks for the help there, I've found a cheap version on the internet although I'm still not 100% sure about the CS inclusion, the version I'm looking at is the 'PC Gamer presents...' version of the GOTY, all on one DVD. One review of it I've read says it includes the CS, but if someone on here knows for certain then I'd be very grateful! Thanks for the help so far and hopefully you'll be able to help me with this query! Alexsutton 12:21, 14 February 2008 (EST)

Thanks for the help[edit]

Thankyou for helping me out on my talk page. I didn't know why the Oblivion and Morrowind thing was there. I didn't put it there thats 4 sure. I understand your vote against the roleplaying section. Maybe we can work together, give eachother ideas for making it better... Aaahhh it's good to be an "Official Editor".

Up For It[edit]

I saw recently that you deleted a bunch of pages. I know, I; a non-admin. can't delete stuff, but need help with anything? Thanks. --Playjex 21:48, 25 January 2008 (EST)

Thanks for the offer to help :) But most of the checks that need to be done before deleting a page are ones that I need to do myself... and in any case, rpeh's the one who's been doing most of the work on keeping our deletion requests under control ;) --NepheleTalk 22:03, 25 January 2008 (EST)
Yes ma'am. --Playjex 22:08, 25 January 2008 (EST)

About the Uvirith's Grave images...[edit]

I am sorry about the way I asked for an image in the official forums. I only needed one for Uvirith's Grave because I already have a stronghold there. I promise that in the future I will get the screenshots myself. Also two of those images were not found because the link was broken so just ignore those. Regarding plagirism on those images, the person that gave me them said in a message that he would be happy to help give UESP images. I'm not very sure on how to upload images onto the site because I don't want the image to turn up massive on the page that I upload them onto. Is there a way I can copy them off the picture-hosting website then size them down in paint? Thanks for your help anywayz and I look forward to helping UESP out!

--Matthewest 18:30, 28 January 2008 (EST)

KJR1012 has created a UESP account and he has uploaded one of his images of Uvirith's Grave. So in the end the image was added to the site properly. If you have additional images that you've created and would like to upload, again, Help:Images is the place to find out how to go about uploading images. Before uploading a screenshot, you will need to use some type of image editing tool to convert the image from .bmp format to .jpg format. However, other than that the image should be uploaded at full size (e.g., 1024x768 resolution is typical for the site's screenshots). As long as the image is uploaded onto UESP, the wiki can take care of the details such as making sure that images are the correct size when shown on pages (which is on reason why we encourage uploading images so strongly). --NepheleTalk 18:40, 28 January 2008 (EST)
Sorry for all the misunderstanding but I hope that suggesting to KJR1012 that he should join UESP was helpful. Unfortunatly I cannot upload any homemade images (although I would love to) because I am an xbox user. Good luck in the future and thanks for all your help!

Sandbox #4[edit]

I've (finally) finished the ABCDE part. Can you check to see if I did it overall correctly? Should I get to work on the next one? So far, I've only gotten two that had the page but not the NPC summary table and I created all the wanted pages as well... Vesna 21:00, 28 January 2008 (EST)

I've scanned a few as you were going through, and it looks like you're doing a great job! :) I noticed that you were correctly keeping the ID in a few cases where it was needed, and I'd seen the NPCs where you added in the missing NPC summary... plus adding all the stub tags and needs image tags (and a few fix image tags too along the way). In other words, you really seem to be covering all the bases. If you're up for doing more of the alphabet, go for it! Thanks, Vesna :D --21:07, 28 January 2008 (EST)

Apology Across The Entire Wiki[edit]

I have made some very stupid mistakes. Wait make that tonnes of very stupid mistakes. I would like to apologize to everybody who I have angered and if you take a look at the patroller nominations page you will see I withdrew my nomination. Obviously I need some advice and tips on the wiki. If you could give me a few tips I would thank you for it greatly

Sorry for my foolishness --Matthewest 23:08, 31 January 2008 (EST)

Since you asked for some tips:
  • Slow down instead of rushing into things. Making mistakes is OK if it's possible for other editors to provide you with feedback. But when you're making 50 edits in an hour, everyone else just has to scramble to keep up with everything you're doing and there's no way to provide feedback on so many different things all at once.
  • Spend some time paying attention to what happens after you've edited a page. You can't learn from your mistakes if you don't try to find out what mistakes you've made and why they were mistakes. Go back to pages you've edited (for example, using the contributions list) and see what changes were subsequently made (e.g., using the "History" link at the top of the page) and what reasons editors gave for those changes. Try to figure out what those explanations mean.
  • Read our Help pages and the various pages listed at UESPWiki:Getting Started.
--NepheleTalk 23:17, 31 January 2008 (EST)
Thankyou for the tips. I will use them from now on and hopefully I won't make any more mistakes.

False Accusation?[edit]

I was just browsing through the site, when you accused me of spamming the page "Oblivion:Untaxing the poor" I hadn't even looked at that site, I got the message while I was reading the guide on the security skill. The only explanation I can think of is that someone has a very simliar IP address to mine, because I'm not even a member of this site, and I don't think I CAN edit anything. I'm not demanding an apology or anything, but I would just like to clarify that I think this may have been a false accusation on your part.

Thank you for your time. — Unsigned comment by 205.188.116.78 (talk)

I think this is the curse of the dynamic IP address coming into play again. That page was indeed vandalized by 205.188.116.5 on multiple occasions (See the IP history) and it seems you triggered the warning even though your IP address is slightly different. We put warnings on anonymous IP address pages to let vandals know we're watching but do occasionally get problems like this with warnings being picked up by the wrong person. Your best bet if you're going to use the site regularly is to create an account so that you won't get the IP address warnings. In the meantime, please accept my apology on behalf of the site - I hope it hasn't put you off visiting again! –RpehTCE 11:52, 29 January 2008 (EST)
My apologies for the misleading message. The message you received was triggered by vandalism that occurred last July; the only reason that it suddenly appeared for you is that your IP address happened to switch to that particular IP for the first time. The wiki system is set up to automatically notify the person using that IP that a message has been posted on their talk page; that notification will continue to appear until a person using that IP visits the talk page. The notification system is an integral part of our warning system, because it is the only way to ensure that someone editing our site actually sees any posted warnings, and is therefore given a chance to modify their behaviour before we have to resort to more forceful means, such as blocking the account.
Unfortunately with dynamic IPs it is possible for a different person to subsequently use the same IP. If the original vandal never bothered to read the message, then the new person using that IP will get the message. I'm not too sure what we can do differently with the system. As a quick check of the edit history link provided by Rpeh shows, the person previously using the IP clearly was vandalizing the site, and the further edits by that person needed to be prevented. If you have any suggestions for what could be done differently, the input would be welcome.
And just to quickly address one of your other points. Yes, you actually are free to edit even without becoming a member of the site. The vast majority of the site's content is openly available for anyone to edit in order to make it as convenient as possible for readers of the site to improve articles. --NepheleTalk 12:49, 29 January 2008 (EST)
