Capitalization Policy[edit]

Steps and Ground Rules for Developing a Comprehensive Revised Policy on Capitalization[edit]

Step 1: Adopt the Wikipedia Manual of Style's capitalization policies as a starting point, listing exceptions to be discussed here and then adopted as policy on our Spelling page.

Step 2: Categorize types of exceptions or types of issues to decide by community discussion on this page.

Step 3: Concurrently with Step 2, list particular examples of current standards or questions regarding capitalization.

Step 4: Identify the major capitalization questions (those that will have widespread impact or which may be the most controversial) and attempt to settle first. List these here, but discuss below under "Major Capitalization Questions".

Step 5: Collect or list major past discussions about capitalization to inform the process.

  • Step 5A: List all "types" of "in-game" text to be used (or not) as standard-setting, or as one factor with respect to such.

Step 6: Clarify how "in-game" capitalization standards will guide capitalization style guidelines.

  • It will not suffice simply to say that something is capitalized or not "in-game"; for example, the "Stats" tab on the Journal menu capitalizes everything in a sort of "header" style: "Skill Books Read".

Step 7: Draft a comprehensive proposal and submit for discussion and revision on the Spelling talk page and list as an "active" discussion on the Community Portal.

Proposed process ground rules: A. Use this sandbox to collect and develop related discussions and to construct the major drafts of complete policies submitted for discussion/adoption. Content in this sandbox should be organized under sections/categories, not by "time of comment". B. All writing in this sandbox should be considered that of User:JR or unattributed. If anyone else adds content to this sandbox, you may identify yourself using a signature or some sensible way (your signature, just typing your username, whatever), but try to keep to the organization of this sandbox instead of adding content chronologically.

"Input Section"/Notes[edit]

Use this section as a "holding place" for "random" thoughts and proposals. They will be gradually organized into topics/categories and listed elsewhere on this page until a draft proposal is ready for proposal.

1. Positions/"titles" belonging to a person by right of rank, office, attainment, etc. A subtitle capitalizes the "High King", at least when it references a specific person. (Ralof in opening cinematic: You're talking to Ulfric Stormcloak, the true High King." Again, shortly thereafter: "Ulfric? The Jarl of Windhelm? "...General Tullius, the Military Governor." "...been an honor, Jarl Ulfric." subtitles, opening cinematic. "Imperial Captain: Anyone else feel like running" (subtitles: opening cinematic) "Orcish smiths." // By your orders, Captain. ... Follow the Captain, prisoner." (subtitles Hadvar in Unbound, referring to specific person by title alone. //"King" Tullius: ...use the Voice to murder his king and ....." interesting because "king" could be seen as being used "generically" (in theory, any king) or to a specific person (Tyrogg), who Ulfric is charged with killing. -from subtitles in "Unbound"

2. Dieties: ("title") A subtitle: 1) "My gods where are they taking us?" 2) "...keep the gods waiting...." Opening cinematic. "...of the Eight Divines upon you..." -fr subtitles "Unbound".

3. Geographical names: A subtitle: "...the Empire wants." Lokir, in opening cinematic. ("The" not capitalized. "Empire" capitalized when referring to the Empire of Tamriel.) "...province of Elsweyr...." character creation on-screen text. Journal quest objective: Make your way to the Keep. (Referring to Helgen Keep; Unbound Quest).

4. Game stats: "...Magicka and Health" (Loading screen)

5. Controls/names of menus, sub-menus, etc.: "...your Journal...." Bethesda Skyrim Manual. But "your journal" (loading screen). "...Quest Journal lists your...." in-game tutorial.

6. Races/factions/classes/groups of people: "...Nords" but "Damn elves..." "...a boy, Imperial walls and towers..." (Imperial refers to? Race? Imperial Legion? "Imperial Empire"? "We're not rebels." subtitle opening cinematic. "Dark Elf" in "On-screen header", but ...dark elves... in corresponding text. High Elf: same: in text, "...high elves..." Wood elves same: "Wood elves...." -subtitles, opening cinematic. "Not many wood elves would ...." Hadvar, subtitle in Unbound quest. "Next, the wood elf." fr subtitles "Unbound". Loading screen: "High Elves" (I think; verify this).

7. Plants/ingredients: "mead with juniper berries...." -subtitle in opening Cinematic.

8. Gameworld concepts/powers/tools/effects: "They can use a Batttlecry to make opponents flee" (in-game/on-screen text presented during character creating, of Nords). "...can use Hirtskin to generate health." (Argonians) "call upon the Dragonskin power to absorb spells." (Bretons) "...Voice of the Emperor to calm an enemy." "...have unarmed claw attacks...." character creation text. "Nords...famous for their resistance to cold...." character creation text. Loading screen: "...use their Highborn power to ...."

9. Skills: "They are skilled with combat and magic..." character creation on-screen text.

10. Objects/inventory items, and types of objects in game worlds: "Orcs ... in [wearing] Heavy Armor" Character creation on-screen text.

10a. Books/journals/notes/letters

11. Historical events: "Civil War" but "this war" -fr subtitles (Tullius, "Unbound"). "(will the dragon bring) ... the End Times." -Hadvar Unbound dialogue.

12. Refid's (REFIDs??) Letter case issue under discussion at UESPWiki:Community_Portal#FormID_Case_Consistency. Created 20 Oct, 2010.
