Two Missing Dungeons[edit]

The list here is correct in that it matches the list in the game, but that list is missing Frostmere Crypt and Shalidor's Maze, so "any dungeon that ..." isn't quite true. (Come to think of it, nor is "dungeon" in the way it's used here (although it is <Dungeon> internally), and the use of "location" (the target) and <Location> (where you shouted) is a bit awkward too. The Word Wall page is the important one though: this one's pretty minor and has survived this long, so I guess it's getting the job done). Aliana 09:45, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Worth noting?[edit]

Any point to note that you can get this quest if you are at Boethia´s shrine? JackTurbo95 07:42, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

It seems most locations work for getting a letter from a friend. You can squander a location by shouting there before finding the current devuldged word wall though. I've refrained from shouting in locations I'm getting the word from until I've gotten said word, and have even gotten it as the location I caused a stir. Artemis Entreri 23:14, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Identity of the "Friend"?[edit]

Is there ever any indication who the identity of this "friend" is, for example if you learn all the words of power? I assumed it was the greybeards, but if you kill Paarthunax then you can still receive the letters even while the greybeards refuse to tell of any new words of power. -- Haravikk 14:19, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Since you have to use a shout in a settlement for you to get a letter then there's not any one "friend" that sends you a letter. It's just supposed to be some unnamed NPC that witnessed you shouting and says to himself/herself "that's like something I saw on this wall once, I'd better send him/her a letter" or whatever. I'm guessing you'll find out in a future DLC, ALA Lonesome Road or something. — Unsigned comment by 96.41.225.122 (talk) at 14:06 on 20 August 2012 (UTC)
I assumed that the letter came from Delphine as her Mysterious Note was also signed from a friend. However I think you still get these even if you dont kill Paarthurnax so I may be wrong! — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 21:19, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
Who's to say that the Courier's not the one writing them? He's everywhere, after all. Schiffy (talk) 21:10, 21 October 2012 (GMT)

() Someone on reddit.com/r/skyrim brought up the theory that Talos himself could be the friend, since you could get one from shouting in places like Azura's Star and The Mind of a Madman. — Unsigned comment by 74.244.201.248 (talk) at 00:19 on 22 October 2012‎

Besides the fact that I think that's a bug (getting them in places like the Star or the Mind), what if you join the Imperials? Would Talos really be willing to help you if you sided with the people who agreed to outlaw his worship? Schiffy (talk) 04:02, 28 October 2012 (GMT)

I even got one after shouting in hermeus mora's realm[edit]

I got this message just after I defeated miraak in the dragonborn questline on pc. the letter talks about how someone allegedly saw me shouting in Apocrypha and wanted to help. I lolled hard.

I know i am just an unlogged anon but i am ready to provide screenshots if you need em. 88.240.158.233 23:18, 24 February 2013 (GMT)

I've had them from shouting in Apocrypha too. I think it's just the shouting in dungeons bug. Malatoth (talk) 23:09, 11 May 2013 (GMT)

Just a note in case anyone experiencing this comes to research[edit]

If you use a shout and trigger this quest, and then proceed to the word wall you will be directed to (by chance), the courier will find you and give you the letter. Reading it does not add the quest and does not add a map marker. However, in my case at least, I was able to get another letter soon after. So if you came here wondering if you need to go ahead and reset I would say you don't.--69.136.59.17 08:19, 4 August 2013 (GMT)

Solstheim locations[edit]

I'm sure I've had this quest send me to Solstheim. Has this page been updated since the release of Dragonborn? --Morrolan (talk) 14:29, 23 September 2013 (GMT)

To be sent to a place it must have the keywords "Dungeon" and "LocationWordWall", and no locations on Solstheim as far as I can tell have that keyword, and they aren't on the word wall list. There are locations you can trigger the quest from though, and I'm adding them now. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 14:42, 23 September 2013 (GMT)
Alright, I'll report back if I get a letter that sends me to Solstheim. --Morrolan (talk) 02:16, 24 September 2013 (GMT)

Locations for Getting Letter (moved from Skyrim:Letter from a Friend)[edit]

I just got a letter saying I caused quite a stir in Apocrypha. Can you get a letter from performing a shout literally anywhere or what? Lord Irvine (talk) 09:40, 14 July 2014 (GMT)

Pretty much, yeah. I've gotten letters for shouting at the Throat of the World, so I don't think anywhere is really off limits. Zul se onikaanLaan tinvaak 13:14, 14 July 2014 (GMT)

Inaccurate description of possible locations to trigger quest[edit]

It says that only settlements other than High Hrothgar work, but I just triggered it by Shouting in Arkngthamz, and others here have reported numerous other dungeons seem to count. So what is the actual trigger requirement? 76.14.241.228 09:33, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

Player Built Homes[edit]

These quests can also be triggered by shouting at any of the player built homes. 86.147.139.6 14:57, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

The Throat of the World[edit]

Twice recently I've completed the quest "The Throat of the World" from the main questline. Both times I have been approached by a courier to deliver a "Letter from a Friend" immediately upon my next approach to a settlement. Both times, the "<Alias=Location>" part of the letter has been omitted. That is, the first sentence of the letter simply reads "You caused a bit of stir in when you demonstrated the power of your Thu'um." Both times, I had not used any shouts except Clear Skies to ascend and descend the summit above High Hrothgar, and Fire Breath on Paarthurnax, as required by the quest. 73.65.56.235 22:03, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

Same thing happened again during the quest "Alduin's Bane". Only shouts used were Clear Skies to ascend and descent the summit above High Hrothgar, and Dragonrend while battling Alduin. Approached by courier afterward with "Letter from a Friend" with "<Alias=Location>" empty. 73.65.56.235 19:53, 31 December 2022 (UTC)
And again, while returning to the summit to learn the Call Dragon shout from Paarthurnax during the quest "The Fallen." This time no shout used except Clear Skies when ascending and descending the summit of the the Throat of the World above High Hrothgar. With the location missing from the letter again. 73.65.56.235 23:46, 31 December 2022 (UTC)
