No Master Vampire[edit]

First time ever posting, please advise.

I have been assigned by Gunmar to kill the master vampire at Morvunskar. After clearing the assorted mages, I found that there was no MV where the quest marker indicated it should be. Playing on XBox 360. Tried reloading autosave and previous regular save from before entering Morvunskar, no effect. Is this going to damage my progress with the Dawnguard questline, and/or is there any way to fix it without access to console commands? Thanks for any input. Hi Crayolamaniac. If you can remember or reproduce it, did you go to the location immediately after the quest? Look at the place page and determine if you had already started another quest pointing you to the same location. Who/what if anyone/thing did you find there? Is there an upper or lower level where the quest marker may actually pointing? Where is the marker pointing? Did you go inside the location before receiving the quest? Can you load a game that occurred before you received the quest? This is only a guess, but I don't think this will impede your progress along the questline. Welcome to the wiki!--JR (talk) 01:43, 11 November 2012 (GMT)
I think it's a bug. I found several other posts around the web referring to exactly what I experienced, at various locations for the Preemptive Strike quest. I did ask myself all the same questions before looking for an answer online, and the answer to all of them is no, unfortunately. I posted here for the community to consider, since it wasn't mentioned here but was on some other wikis. I did read on another wiki that the only known fix without console commands (which I don't have/360) is to load a save from before receiving the quest. I did find Sanguine there, just wandering around. I have completed the quest "A Night to Remember". I can no longer take quests from Gunmar, as he "thinks" I already have one active, and everyone else inside the keep points me to him. (I found the other references by googling "no master vampire Preemptive Strike" if anyone cares to look around). — Unsigned comment by Crayolamanic (talkcontribs) at 23:39 on 12 November 2012
Hi Crayolamaniac. Thanks for sharing this (unfortunate) information with us. I have added a description of the bug on this article's page. It does seem unresolveable at this time. The only thing we can hope for is a fix in a future patch. I noticed that you are a new contributer, and are interested in helping out. Welcome, and thanks. Just for your information, your edit to my comment above was undone because we generally do not change other people's posts on talk/discussion pages, even when it is an improvement (as yours was). Don't take this in a negative way, go ahead and continue contributing, please! We all learn as we go, and the learning never ends. See the policy guideline on the topic here. Whether your edit could be considered ok because it's minor and did not change the substance or intent of my comment is a subjective call, but we generally tilt toward preserving what people write on talk pages and in their own words. Please add me to the list of people you can ask questions to, at any time, on my talk page or by email. --JR (talk) 05:26, 13 November 2012 (GMT)
I just went and tried reloading a save from before I went to Morvunskar, but after being given the objective, and the Master Vampire was where he was supposed to be this time. The first time I reloaded it did not fix the problem, but I am happy to say all is now as it should be in Skyrim...for me at least. Adding this in case it should be added to the info about the bug. — Unsigned comment by Crayolamanic (talkcontribs) at 03:51 on 15 November 2012
Hey I don't know what happened to me, cause the exact same thing that happened to you guys happened to me, so I loaded up a previous save before I entered Morvunskar and The vampire master still wasn't there so I went outside and left it on pause while I read what you guys posted then I went back inside and the vampire master appeared so I started running towards him and Sanguine killed him for me before I could get there, and I completed the mission thanks to Sanguine. — Unsigned comment by 70.45.128.228 (talk) at 06:57 on 20 December 2012
Thanks for sharing this info, both of you. We'll see if we can figure out what's going on. Your information will help. --JR (talk) 08:34, 20 December 2012 (GMT)

() Figured it out!

I found out what the problem is. The Master Vampire is sleeping in a bed next to a wall. When you get near, he gets up on the wrong side (he steps into the wall) and *poof* he takes a million mile fall towards the center of the planet. Good luck killing him while he falls. How i got him was by ignoring everything in there, running straight to where i knew he was and killing him before he could get out of bed. I was close though. Sneaking helps. — Unsigned comment by 62.198.98.92 (talk) at 13:40 on 18 January 2013

Hi all, I had this same problem. I figured the NPCs usually return to their normal location after combat ends so I left Morvunskar, saved and quit game, restarted and went back in, and there he was! No trouble finding/getting to him. Hope that helps!108.77.176.47 19:58, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
Another hint here, wait until morning. Sounds stupid for a Vampire. But he goes to the shrine and leaves the bed in the morning.

no allies or vamp[edit]

Okay I was sent to Hrodulfs House and no one except a couple of ash spawns were there I don't know what happened but go back to last save — Unsigned comment by 76.115.167.227 (talk) at 05:26 on 9 February 2013
