Empty Area[edit]

I'm not sure what triggers these, but depending on where you are when you use your Shout, the resulting letter can be a bit funny. I accidentally hit the Powers button while doing the ring quest in Windhelm. The letter I got said I caused quite a stir in Viola Giordano's House -- which was empty! 173.49.49.150 02:00, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

You're not wrong. Sometimes, the section where they note the zone is blank entirely! Very odd.-Zydrate[][] 22:17, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Already knew the word[edit]

I just got one that said I caused quite a bit of a stir in Volskygge, and that I should turn my attention to Volskgge. I recieved it after I had already gotten the word of power. — Unsigned comment by 75.121.10.230 (talk) on 16 March 2012

The locations of the letter are randomly selected, so it's possible you will be sent to a word wall you've already visited. The bug is noted here. --SerCenKing Talk 22:59, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
You might have used a shout in Volskygge, and then found a shout wall afterwards, but without leaving the ruin, so it would already have set the script for a courier to come find you with a new shout location, and it was just coincidence that it happened to be the place you used the shout and had already found the shout. It's a known bug, I've been sent to locations I cleared long before, you then have to use the console to complete the misc quest.

Origin[edit]

Any idea, who this "friend" might be? 92.195.111.11 14:30, 27 March 2013 (GMT)

Most likely -- Skyrim:Delphine. Given the note she leaves in Skyrim:Ustengrav, which is also signed with 'A Friend'. 83.128.72.185 12:11, 8 April 2013 (GMT)
And the fact that she's one that would definitely want you to be a hero. Saromango (talk) 05:08, 11 December 2013 (GMT)
I don't know - I came across some pretty strong evidence that it might be Lore:Hermaeus Mora or...most likely just a bug. But seriously, the Courier does say "He wouldn't say", so it can't be Delphine.Digital Utopia (talk) 04:02, 25 January 2014 (GMT)
Another possibility might be one of the Graybeards, such as Wulfgar. While he doesn't necessarily speak in the common tongue, nothing about that suggests that he couldn't write. And he does have a quill and scroll on him. Pueblonative (talk) 16:36, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
There's no evidence given in the game as to who this friend is, for speculations please see our forums. -- SarthesArai Talk 16:57, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Unlisted DG location bug?[edit]

I got a letter saying: "You caused a bit of stir in Skyrim:Arkngthamz when you demonstrated the power of your Thu'um. ...". This actually is the second time a dungeon was misinterpreted as settlement, the first time it was Skyrim:Dimhollow Crypt. Is this an unlisted Skyrim:Dawnguard bug, or may another mod be interfering? (Note: I have the unofficial Skyrim/DG patches and multiple other mods installed.) --92.107.108.210 19:32, 3 September 2013 (GMT)

No, it is possible for the letter to be sent to you if you shout anywhere. See Notes. --AN|L (talk) 20:09, 3 September 2013 (GMT)

Letter identities merge[edit]

So apparently when you put two copies of Letter from a Friend in a container, they merge together then read the same thing instead of being different letters. It doesn't affect my quest any but I wanted to be able to have the collection of notes in a dresser so that kind of annoys me a bit. They both say Dragonsreach and Volunruud even though one should say Windhelm and Folgunthur, but since I stored one with the other they have the same text. Can't fix it with console since I'm playing on PS3, so the only way to remedy the situation would be to go back to a previous save, but seems like a hassle for a minor cosmetic issue. Still, kind of annoyed this even happened. But if someone feels like putting this in a bug section somewhere on the wiki, be my guest. I don't know if anyone else cares or has had this happen. 71.171.112.74 05:24, 8 September 2013 (GMT)

Blank location[edit]

I got the letter and it said "You caused a bit of stir in when you demonstrated the power of your Thu'um."

Has anyone else had that part be blank?174.247.10.49 05:13, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

I got a letter that just had my characters name at the top and nothing else. (September 20th, 2023)
