Dragon Hostility[edit]

Is it worth mentioning that giants will attack dragons, given the opportunity? I personally have been saved during a dragon fight by a wandering giant on at least one occasion. --Kalamage 23:54, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Giant Pictures[edit]

Giant Pictures
I took these with steam. I used the tm console command so that there is no menus. If you want to use them you can. :P — Unsigned comment by Ututu222 (talkcontribs) at 02:20 on 21 November 2011 (UTC)

bug[edit]

The getting hit and flying up doesnt seem to be a bug to me, it just seems like the effect of a giants enourmus physical strength, albeit a little overpowered. (Eddie The Head 12:01, 23 November 2011 (UTC))

It's not a bug, it's a feature!— Unsigned comment by 71.194.190.179 (talk) at 06:27 on 26 November 2011 (UTC)
This isn't a bug, so I changed the 'bug' section to 'notes'. Skysky 18:31, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
So, are you guys saying that this effect was intentionally made for comical purposes? I thought it was a bug at first, but since the space personality core DLC came up where it is sent back to space if it is hit by a giant, it seems to make sense. — Unsigned comment by 130.157.91.157 (talk) at 06:26 on 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Command Creature[edit]

It may be worth noting that using the command creature effect on the mammoth after angering the giant is quite an effective way to combat the giant. Just make sure to help the mammoth emerge the victor, as even a weakened giant can be a pain to kill, where the mammoth will be simple to finish off. 72.130.254.147 06:27, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Paralysis poisons are also effective vs giants[edit]

Giant's don't resist paralysis poisons, whether stock or crafted. Also a good way to keep them occupied if you need to tangle with one. 24.156.216.144 11:25, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

I would say that is due to the 1.2 patch removing all resistances. (Eddie The Head 11:27, 4 December 2011 (UTC))
It's not the patch, Giants indeed does not resist paralysis, but their magic resistance will lower the duration. Nevertheless, it's a way to fight them.117.5.243.113 17:28, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Sad Giant[edit]

This is probably insignificant, but to the southwest of eastmarch imperial camp there is a giant standing over the body of a dead mammoth in the water, it looks as though it is in mourning, like the mammoth was a pet Emzi43 11:01, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

I've seen exactly the same thing in my game around a week ago. Forgot to mention that. I think that the water is poisonous that's why the body of a mammoth can be found there. --Arkhon 08:11, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Mammoths will sometimes fly up into the air for seemingly no reason (terrain glitch?) and fall down to earth again, dying from fall damage. I have seen this happen to mammoths following giants around the plains. But the giants never noticed the bizarre death of their "pet" and continued on. I suspect that most randomly dead mammoths lying around died in this way, but I can't explain the behavior of the "sad" giant. Possibly his herding behavior stopped because he ran out of mammoths to herd, or possibly he's just a more sensitive soul than his brethren. 71.178.115.32 00:41, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I don't think so, it's inventory was empty, if it was a normal one it would have had tusks and a snout on it. And it was in a pretty coincidental spot. Emzi43 21:30, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Also, it wasn't just some random pool; there were a bunch of mammoth skeletons in it already. Maybe it's a gravesite or something and the giant was supposed to have dragged its body there. 76.104.188.147 06:20, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

How long does it take for a Giant to turn hostile?[edit]

It would seem natural for this page to have some information on how long the player needs to be in the vicinity of a Giant before it turns hostile, and how close vicinity. Unfortunately I am not at all skilled with the Construction Kit, so I will have to appeal to others to do something about it. --MortenOSlash 21:02, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

I still wonder about this. —MortenOSlash (talk) 10:32, 23 November 2013 (GMT)
Anyone who knows anything more about the details on the aggressiveness of giants? —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:18, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Frost Giant Split[edit]

I've proposed this article be split, giving Frost Giants their own article at Skyrim:Frost Giant. Even though they're just a cheap reskin of regular Giants, in lore terms they're completely separate and in appearance they're vastly differing. Add to that the fact that they're DLC specific, and I feel there's enough justification to give them a separate page, or at least a separate entry. —Legoless 19:51, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

I only added them here originally because in game they are basically the same except for appearances so was unsure if there was enough reason to give them there own separate page. If lore treats them as separate creatures I think we should have them separate here as well. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 21:28, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
They also seem to be unique, and the giant versions of animals (eg Mudcrab Guardian Spirit) in skyrim have their own pages. The Silencer speaksTalk 21:36, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Giving Cow to Giant[edit]

There is a faction called Once_the_player_gives_the_cow_to_the_giant_they_are_both_permamently_added_to_this_faction. Does this mean that there is a hidden quest to give one of the tattooed cows to a giant? --Xyzzy 16:53, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

There is no actual quest for this, here is a list of everything related in the CS. The Silencer speaksTalk 17:05, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
I just came across a farmer who was making a peace offering of a painted cow to the giant at Sleeping Tree camp. We exchanged a small dialogue where he warned me to keep my distance in case the giant thought I was part of the offering. I followed at a distance, in sneak mode to be sure and the giant just clubbed the poor farmer to death! Annabellalot (talk) 11:54, 27 November 2012 (GMT)
That's a world interaction with a farmer giving the cow to a giant, not the player. — ABCface 15:21, 27 November 2012 (GMT)

Karstaag a Frost Giant?[edit]

The Giants added in Dawnguard looks remarkable alike Karstaag from Bloodmoon, am i the only one seeing this? — Unsigned comment by 95.209.30.41 (talk) at 20:58 on July 10, 2012

Language[edit]

Is there any information on what type of language they speak, to me it sounds like some kind of elven/mer language. RIM 13:32, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

In Daggerfall, one of the language skills the player could learn was Giantish; it stands to reason that this is also the language the giants of Skyrim use. However this does little to tell us about the roots of the language. Garland the Elder 00:46, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Moved from Article[edit]

moved from article:

  • If you kill enough giants and/or mammoths, you can walk up to any group or individual of either of the two species and it will continue to be docile until you attack it, and once attacked it will flee. While quite humorous at first, it becomes annoying when trying to eliminate a group as they are quite fast and split off in different directions.
added by AngeliSangui on 23:30, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

This sounds extremely unlikely to me, so I think it's better to keep it on the talk page until other players can verify the information. ABCface 13:49, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

I had Mammoths fleeying from me before either. I had killed there Giant and there fellow Mammoths, then the last two keept running away. Anoying indeed, but logic as Mammoths are farm animalsfor Giants, a cow would run too I suppose. With Gaints I never had this, I kill those first. — Unsigned comment by 94.213.109.150 (talk) at 19:35 on 30 March 2014 (GMT)
I have never had giants or giant-owned mammoths run from me, but I now have 'passive' interactions with giants fairly frequently. I used to kill them whenever possible, but now avoid it, and often times I am able to walk right into their camp to loot the skeevers, chests, etc. without any hostility. They see me (and my followers), but often just make the warning gestures, or occasionally just watch me. I have no idea why the change has happened. Most travelling giants w/mammoths ignore me now as well, even if I get in their way, unless I actually attack their mammoths. Csjimmy (talk) 01:43, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Giants Dying?[edit]

I was in the Whiterun Stables when I turned around to see a giant appear out of nowhere and die.Glitch?--Skyrimplayer 15:13, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Something like the bug with reappearing (and falling) dead dragons and dragon skeletons, or did it appear alive and just suddenly die after some time? —MortenOSlash 19:07, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
As soon as I saw it it was in the death animation.I might just have been to slow though.--Skyrimplayer 19:31, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
I've seen this numerous times when entering a zone, usually involving a creature I had killed before I last left that zone. The dead creature just drops from a standing position as soon as you see it. I think I've seen this happen with a creature that wasn't originally encountered in the zone I was entering, but very, very rarely. It may be a combination of two existing bugs, rather than a new one. --XyzzyTalk 21:15, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
… or maybe has been killed in the zone, not necessarily by the player? This is the same zone you first encounter the Companions out killing a giant early in the game, is it not? —MortenOSlash 21:22, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
The giant that the Companions fight is actually seen at nearby Pelagia Farm, but you still might be on to something.--XyzzyTalk 21:35, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
How large are the zones, anyway? —MortenOSlash 17:01, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Level 32 vs. somewhere between level 20 and 30[edit]

The monster summary box tells us giants are level 32, but the notes says "somewhere between level 20 and 30". Should one of them have been corrected? —MortenOSlash (talk) 20:41, 23 September 2012 (GMT)

It appears that the vague level note was added before somebody looked it up and entered it in the NPC summary. I corrected the note. Thanks for pointing it out. --Xyzzy Talk 02:52, 24 September 2012 (GMT)
Happy to help. I thought something like that was the reason for the opposing facts, but as I am not familiar with the Creation Kit I have no means to check myself. —MortenOSlash (talk) 05:11, 24 September 2012 (GMT)
I found the info on CSList, which anybody can use. --Xyzzy Talk 05:59, 24 September 2012 (GMT)
Ah. That gives me an idea … … Let us see … Giants are in the Creature Faction (0x00000013) – as are goats. Hmmm. Could it be …? Of course it could! See you at the Cursed tribe talk page! —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:35, 24 September 2012 (GMT)

Wandering Giant[edit]

Halfway between Bloated Man's Grotto and Secunda's Kiss, I came across an unusually non-hostile giant. I prefer letting my enemies attack me first before I kill them so I stood in front of the giant, thus blocking it's path (it was headed towards the Sleeping Tree Camp I just cleared) and provoking it. Unlike all other random giant encounters I've had, this one did not stop or threaten me. It acted similar to the Mourning Giant; looking at me and continuing to walk. Does anyone have any information to add about this particular giant? 96.226.232.13 19:15, 29 July 2014 (GMT)

I encountered one along the road toward Honningbrew outside of Whiterun. The BB Suite is my HQ there, so I was just turning back inside from offloading my horse when I heard this loud, echoing sound all around me. At first it sounded like a dragon above me, flapping it's wings slowly and ominously. When I turned, I saw this giant with a horned helmet and a humungous dwemer axe over his shoulder, looking at the ground while he slowly trod forward. I thought he was going after my horse so I ran to get between them, but he didn't even give me a glance, just kept forlornly tromping down the road. When I got closer, I couldn't interact with him, and he didn't appear to be a threat, so I just let him carry on. 98.172.187.219 20:52, 5 October 2014 (GMT)

Stamina?[edit]

Shouldn't this page show a giant's stamina? If it has no stamina then shouldn't we put in "N/A" like with magika? --66.249.84.229 18:25, 19 February 2015 (GMT)

Good catch. I've added it in. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:48, 19 February 2015 (GMT)

Creation Kit Note?[edit]

Is it worth adding a note about how if a warhammer better than a Giant Club, they will equip and use that instead? — Unsigned comment by Aj The Magical Owl (talkcontribs) at 09:59 on 15 August 2015 (GMT)

It's a common behavior for enemies and NPCs to equip the best item in their inventory, so I don't think it's worth mentioning. Zul do onikaanLaan tinvaak 15:49, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

Damage Stats?[edit]

Does anyone know the base damage of a giant's attack? It's higher than 200 by my testing. I've looked around online and have heard the figure 240. If anyone can verify this, I think it would be useful to include it in the page.FrozenWolf150 (talk) 07:26, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

That's an interesting question. According to what I can see in the Creation Kit, the base damage, either with a club or unarmed, is 60 points. However, a very old edit suggests that the club's power changes based on the character's level on entering the cell. I don't see anything that suggests that in the CK, but things can often be buried deeply, so I'm not yet ready to say that that's wrong, either.
They also have a Two-Handed skill of 83, so that would factor in as well. I'm not well enough versed in damage calculations to be sure that I'm coming up with the right figure based on that, since my figure is only 85. I'm probably missing a number of things in that calculation. If you have links to other posts about the damage, it might be helpful for me to read them and see how people are getting their figures, if any of them actually go into the game mechanics at all. Oh, and I've left out the power attack, which looks to me like it may do as much as triple the damage, since there's a 1.5 multiplier for the power attack itself, plus a ranged spell effect that looks like it might double the damage. Again, I don't really know how all that damage stacks, though, so I could be way off. Robin Hood  (talk) 15:49, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, the power attack doubles their damage, but I don't know the factors that go into this. When I have any form of Spell Absorption, the giant power attacks (ground bash or stomp) trigger the absorption effect. For their normal attacks, my earlier testing had the figure around 225, except for the fact that I didn't take my hidden armor rating into account. Further complicating matters was that I was testing on Legendary, where enemies do 3x damage to the player.FrozenWolf150 (talk) 22:37, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
