Odd Greeting Dialogue[edit]

Elrindir has friendly greeting dialogues unless you have fulfilled the assassination contract on his brother, Anoriath. Whether you are seen killing Anoriath or not, Elrindir's greeting will change to something like "Hello, you miserable wretch", even though he politely thanks you for your business when you exit from his dialogue. Also, if you close the dialogue menu after his first greeting and reopen dialogue with him a second time, his second greeting will usually be the friendlier greeting. Regardless, this doesn't seem to make him more likely to become hostile and attack, and it doesn't seem to affect what he has for sale, thankfully. It just makes him seem distinctly bi-polar when you speak with him multiple times. KeturahIshtari (talk) 06:24, 14 September 2013 (GMT)

Attacks on entering the Drunken Huntsman[edit]

In a couple of games now, Elrindir has attacked as soon as I've entered the shop (not during my first visit). My companion kills him quickly (despite my instantly exiting the shop), and I'm minus a 24hr combat vendor! This has just happened, following an inexplicably hostile reception when trying to enter Whiterun (guards hostile, companion killed one near Meadery but remainder 'becalmed' on return to the city gate). I do free Imperial/Thalmor prisoners on the road as a matter of course (and did so near the intersection by the Western Watchtower before reaching Whiterun) - perhaps this has something to do with it?121.72.245.238 00:03, 23 March 2013 (GMT)

The reason is that Elrindir, like many other NPCs, is set as "Aggresssive". It means that if you commit a crime grave enough to make guards hostile (assault or murder), he will attack you. Now, what you exactly did to provoke everyone's hostility happens unfortunately often. The reason is simple: while the prisoners escorted by Imperials or Thalmors count as witnesses, killing them may not always clear your bounty. Also, for a reason I can't really explain, it tends to make guards hostile instead of just arresting you and sometimes sheating your weapon does not make them stop.
The solution: leave the Hold and wait for everything to settle down (I think it's 48 in-game hours). And if you really want to help prisoners, either be sneaky, throw a Fury spell on the guards or give the poor guy a weapon and fight by his side. Elakyn (talk) 16:19, 23 March 2013 (GMT)

Making him a follower doesn't work[edit]

Just playing around with the console a little. Set the relationship rank to 4 and tried to add Elrindir to the follower and the marriage faction. Marriage dialogues appear, but the follower dialogue doesn't. I guess it's somehow linked to the fact that he never leaves The Drunken Huntsman? Could that be fixed with adding him to some new faction? (Interesting though, that the marriage option shows up, which normally should only work if making them a follower also works)... 77.185.209.243 17:20, 26 February 2014 (GMT)

We only document normal gameplay and associated bugs on UESP, and talk pages are for the purpose of discussing issues related to the article. This sort of tinkering with game settings is better discussed in the forums. --Xyzzy Talk 19:03, 26 February 2014 (GMT)

Behind the Counter[edit]

He doesn't stay there at all times, if you go into the bedroom he'll abandon the counter to make sure you're not up to something... like murdering his brother while he sleeps, changing the ledger, ect.Vainamoinen -Talk -Stuff 19:21, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Another fix for the Drunken Hunstman tresspassing bug[edit]

This fix worked for me when none of the others listed did:

It appears to reset the ownership of the store properly. Nobody inside yells at me when entering, I can trade, and taking anything sitting around is still considered stealing.

Refuses to be merchant again[edit]

So, I killed Anoriath with poison while he slept. Elrindir ran outside for some reason, and freaked out, even though he didn't see anything (I was invisible and both were asleep). Now, he won't give me the option to shop, even though he isn't actively hostile. I went away for about 50 in-game hours, and he's still not giving me the shop option. Did something get glitched?
