Where to get it[edit]

Anyone found out where to get it yet? — Unsigned comment by 84.85.60.7 (talk) at 12:09 on 12 November 2011 (UTC)

I received the Detect Life tome as a reward for restoring Treva's Watch to its rightful owners. (It's on the waterfront midway between Riften and Ivarstead.) — Unsigned comment by 71.131.6.133 (talk) at 20:38 on 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Does not work on undead[edit]

There's a problem with the article -- in Skyrim, Detect Life does NOT work on undead. Hostile creatures show up as red and non-hostile creatures show up as blue. — Unsigned comment by 71.131.6.133 (talk) at 20:38 on 13 November 2011 (UTC)

About showing deer in red: seems to be the same mechanics as in Oblivion: those animals are set to be totally hostile with no confidence, causing them to flee on sight. The spell only "sees" the agression, not the cowardice. — Unsigned comment by 79.245.82.24 (talk) at 00:24 on 14 December 2011 (UTC)

Item with this effect?[edit]

Anyone figure out how to get this on an item? I've tried a few things using console and all i ended up with was some really expensive set of jewelry that does nothing at all or shows the visual effect on my player and nothing else. -yoo203 — Unsigned comment by 58.232.190.193 (talk) at 09:17 on 18 December 2011 (UTC)

it's not possible to attach a Detect life magic effect archtype to an object directly. It's possible to use a scripted magic effect and attach this to the object. A detect life spell with cast and forget effect(area must be assigned)(magicka cost must be 0) must be included in the script effect using "addspell" command and cast command.(better if you don't use the original detect life effect).Llde (talk) 15:30, 4 December 2012 (GMT)

Changing detect shader?[edit]

Egads is that shader garish. While detecting, it becomes impossible to even tell WHAT something is, let alone WHO something is. The only shaders I can find are for oblivion, anyone know where to find a shader that isn't so eye-hurt? Preferably one that just uses the mesh 'glow' effect, like when under the effect of an oakflesh spell. — Unsigned comment by 121.75.71.112 (talk) at 10:55 on 3 July 2013

A (programming) glitch/feature (supposition).[edit]

When underground you may see an NPC indicated when nothing is there.

If you cast detect life or wear the Grey cowl in the basement of a Hearthfire home, it will detect any NPCs on the floors above you. They are shown wrongly one level lower than they should be. i.e. those on the ground floor are shown at your level while those on the upper level appear one level above you. Of course they are not really there. This looks like a nifty piece of coding that's tripped over its laces.

This feature could account for the above NPC's being wrongly detected. I suspect they are there, but on a different level to you. — Unsigned comment by Adsjaldjjfgwetwlla (talkcontribs) at 20:19 on 10 May 2024
