Companion Chopping Glitch?[edit]

The original glitch report text states:

"There is a very dangerous glitch that when your companion is chopping wood, s/he will be permanently stuck, chopping wood. The companion will not die, even through dragons, the only way to get this glitch to go away is to reload a saved game, this is very bad if the game didn't save or if you didn't save. Do not get Lidia (a companion) because the glitch will make her angry (while having unlimited health) she will start to pull out an axe (while another lidia is still chopping wood) and instantly will dissappear, then will start to attack you (remember she is invisible) and you will be assassinated 3-59 seconds later. EvEn If YoU hAvE dRaGoN aRmOuR!!!"

Can anyone verify that this happens? --Fluff 07:30, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Not that I have tried this, but a lot of the glitches where followers get stuck doing something or whatever can be fixed by hitting them with the Unrelenting Force or Ice Form shout, or by fast traveling. --Maniclurker 19:35, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
My current follower is in a seemingly infinite chopping loop as I type this. He's been at it for about three real-time hours. I'll post again when I try to stop him.Oblivoid 04:33, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
My follower stopped just fine when I pressed the back button on the controller. No problems. However, after three real-time hours of chopping he'd only accumulated 72 pieces of firewood, which is probably what he had made before the glitch occurred. Start Chopping Glitch?[edit]

I have noticed in my game that if I move while standing up after chopping the third piece of wood, but before it goes back to First Person PoV, I'll instantly start chopping wood again. Console: Xbox 360, Version: 1.2 Noobishlord 16:36, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

This has actaully happened to me occasionally too, on PC. Just the same, sometimes I'll try to walk away, but it automatically starts another round of wood-chopping.118.93.246.139 09:19, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Forced glitch[edit]

Another way to continuously chop wood without a follower is to move your character to the left or right precisely after striking the third piece of wood before your character can completely stand up straight. In order to insure your character to continuously chop wood is to double tap to the left or right. The following method has only been tested and proven to work in if your character is in third person view when activating the chopping block on the 360 console. Confirmation is needed for the PS3 and PC versions. — Unsigned comment by 99.104.69.97 (talk) at 00:44 on 27 July 2012

This is a forced bug that is useful for those not willing to employ some free labour. If someone wants to reword it better into the article feel free to do so. The Silencer speaksTalk 00:02, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
"if someone wants to reword it better into the article feel free to do so", but when someone does, you remove it. Hardly appropriate. 75.173.77.115 07:18, 1 March 2014 (GMT)

Other Effects[edit]

I've noticed that there are other effects of chopping wood, besides making a bit of gold for yourself. It appears that chopping wood increases how much some characters 'like' the player, and after bringing a load of chopped wood to (for example) Hulda at the Bannered Mare you will then be able to take many of their items that are lying around (i.e. they are no longer red, and it says take and not steal). This is particularly useful when trying to obtain the Argonian Ale in Whiterun for the drunk quest since you're able to take the ale without actually stealing it.

I also heard that the wood chopping affects the economy, apparently if you keep chopping wood the merchants in the area will get more and more barter gold over time, a nice alternative to the investment and master trader perks if these don't already stack. 31.111.104.146 23:27, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes, individuals like the player more because it counts as a favor towards the person. This happens with quests like Gather Wheat as well. It's a rather generic occurrence, so it's not listed on the page.
As for your point about the economy, this should be false--Skyrim has no real economy. This only happens with a mod, to my knowledge. Vely►t►e 23:48, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
Selling firewood might a limited affect on merchants, after selling 210 firewood at the solitude sawmill, the blacksmith (in solitude) had 1123 gold instead of 1000. As for prices, I'm not sure. This isn't due to a mod as I play on the xbox 360, with all DLC upto Dragonborn.86.11.241.46 10:46, 25 December 2012 (GMT)
Beirand has 1000 gold to start with, and all merchants use their personal gold to barter with, so he already had the gold. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 14:07, 25 December 2012 (GMT)

Faster Chopping and Glitch with Glitch Fix[edit]

It is possible (as I saw mentioned) to chop wood without having to look down again to the block and press 'activate'. On Xbox (don't know pc), wait until the third time the axe strikes the block and pull back on the left stick. The animation will begin again. Players can use this to chop wood by sound alone (those who can take the boredom), as you can begin the next chopping sequence the moment you hear the wood split. If the player would like to opt out of the animation for any reason, say, you want to only chop up two pieces of firewood, simply take any actions and the animation will stop following the next chop. Sometimes a player may lose track of chops. If this happens and you want to keep chopping without interruption, watch your character to see if the axe disappears from his hand. If you see it disappear from the characters hand, you still have time till the end of the animation when the character stands upright to pull back your left stick and go seamlessly into the next chop. Timing at the very end of the animation will sometimes cause the screen to freeze without returning you to the normal view. If this happens, go into the inventory and drop all your firewood. Then fast travel to the place where the block you were using is and a piece of firewood with (x quantity) should be where you dropped it. Also, to avoid moving encumbered (impulse power), you may drop your large quantity of wood then manipulate it by holding 'activate' ('a' button on xbox) and walking to your buyer. Running in spurts is possible, but may cause you to drop the block of wood. With all the time put into getting rich by chopping, a backup save is advisable. I once lost a large block to the following: I ran with the block and dropped probably around a thousand piece block of firewood. While looking for it on the ground, Hod's son came to me and said, "Here, you dropped this.", at which point the game added one piece of firewood to my inventory instead of the thousand or so. I haven't checked UESP to see what "Pranks" he pulls, but this may be one of them. Also, while boring, chopping wood can be used to get septims when you don't want your character to level up by raising speech. I have one first level character who, simply by investing some hours into chopping firewood, was able to start the game with 40,000 gold.— Unsigned comment by EiderJedi (talkcontribs) on 2:31, 19 December 2012‎

Moved from article[edit]

  • On the Xbox, if you pull back slightly on the left control stick after you finish chopping the third log, it will continue to chop for another set.
  • can confirm the same on ps3

This seems to be an issue with both Xbox and ps3 (and older versions of PC). I used to get this with mining ore on PC, but I don't experience it with patch 1.9 installed. Can anybody confirm that this still happens with current patches installed? ThuumofReason (talk) 14:46, 5 December 2013 (GMT)

Can confirm that this does NOT work on PC. When quickly hitting the "S" key to move backwards my character was unable to move or continue chopping. Fix for this is just to simply fast travel somewhere or load a previous save. Looseminded (talk) 05:31, 20 January, 2014 (GMT)

Quest giving[edit]

In the WT is said: "If you talk to one of the quest givers, they will offer to pay you for chopped firewood."
At least with Hulda it's no talking to her, although Saadia points to her with a comment like "If you're looking for work, ask Hulda." Hulda herself only mentions it when standing near her, but no dialog option.
If that's also the case with other quest givers, this should perhaps be rewritten(?). -- CompleCCity (talk) 18:35, 3 March 2014 (GMT)

  • I can confirm this. Dialog option is not showing for me too. Tried in Whiterun and Riverwood. Skyrim Legendary Edition. Unmodded "clean" game. --ExVault (talk) 11:19, 16 January 2015 (GMT)
