Balbus bug[edit]

First off, does this always happen? If so, are you sure it is a bug and not just an unfortunate consequence of an intentional design decision? If not, what are the details on his continued travels? CapnZapp (talk) 17:54, 11 December 2012 (GMT)

Balbus fix[edit]

Regarding "no known fix" couldn't the section instruct PC players to set Balbus flag to make him work like a companion (kneeling instead of dying, but being killable nontheless) or make him outright essential? CapnZapp (talk) 17:54, 11 December 2012 (GMT)

Inventory[edit]

Shouldn't Balbus Fork etc be mentioned in the new paragraph detailing his inventory? (And not only in the separate section below) regards, CapnZapp (talk) 15:59, 15 December 2012 (GMT)

Haven't tested in game, but from the looks of CSList, the fork doesn't appear in his inventory - if that is the case, listing it in his inventory would be misleading. Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 19:47, 15 December 2012 (GMT)
Thanks. Okay, that means the fork etc is only added to Balbus' stuff by the quest. Makes sense now. CapnZapp (talk) 11:16, 16 December 2012 (GMT)

() I encountered Balbus some time ago and chose to ignore him. I recently passed the same encounter zone and found him dead with skeevar and a spider nearby. In his inventory were the fork and other items mentioned only to be available after the DB quest. I have not started the DB line at all. Perhaps this warrants a re-examination. I'm using 1.8 with DG & HF.50.151.20.50 15:13, 8 February 2013 (GMT) IsharaMeradin

From the quest scripts it's clear that he only gets the fork (and other items) when the "quest" starts, but he only spawns when the quest starts. In effect he spawns with the fork in his inventory, and the line of his inventory has been changed to reflect this. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 20:30, 26 February 2013 (GMT)

I too just found him dead after previously ignoring him, like the above poster, I found him next to a dead skeever, and a live giant frostbite spider, I also have not done the DB quest line, and he did have the fork on his corpse.

I did do the quest to destroy the brotherhood though, so perhaps it is a case of the game just needs you to have become the gourmet, or finished the brotherhood off, if it requires anything at all.51.187.191.248 22:46, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

stuck instance of Balbus vs quest[edit]

If Balbus is stuck and you keep him alive, does these items (fork etc) spawn on the existing copy of Balbus when you reach the relevant quest stage? Will the opportunity to lie to him be available? Or does Balbus need to respawn for the dialogue and item exchange to happen properly? CapnZapp (talk) 11:26, 16 December 2012 (GMT)

Removed inventory reference[edit]

The items he gives you are only added to his inventory after selecting the third dialogue option False. Killed without ever speaking to him, carried all his clothes, lockpick, gold, and the ingredients he is supposed to give you. It's possible that the original poster meant that they couldn't pickpocket them, but they are certainly there on his corpse. --DaedalusMachina (talk) 23:20, 22 March 2013 (GMT)

Confirmed, i just cleared a group of bandits that were around him, didn't realise he was there so its entirely possible i killed him aswell. But all his inventory listed was on him. Killerchronic (talk) 22:36, 30 April 2013 (GMT)

Another way to save Balbus - moved from article[edit]

Another way to save him is to make him aggressive, lure him out of the cell in which he was spawned, then calm him. He'll then walk away, ending up in the very center of the map, just south of Bleakwind Basin.

Is this really going to save him? I think walking across Skyrim is probably more dangerous than remaining where he is. --Xyzzy Talk 03:29, 2 May 2013 (GMT)

Alright I tested this, it works to get him away from his initial place. I punched him and ran a distance, then calmed him and fast-travelled away. But he didn't show up at Bleakwind Basin for me, he just stayed where I left him (in this case, the destroyed Hall of Vigilant). 76.166.130.139 14:35, 4 August 2013 (GMT)
I tested this on the 360, but he didn’t head for the center of the map. At level 66, I found him at the spawn point near Shimmermist Cave & Frenzied him. He followed me to Loreius Farm, where I Calmed him. He seems content to remain at the farm, spending most of his time sitting in the chair on the porch.–149.160.118.171 23:17, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

No Ref ID?[edit]

Had a strange glitch in my game. Walked outside of my home in Falkreath to find a mercenary and a series of Imperial and Stormcloak guards obviously glitched out with each other (at first I thought it was a mod conflict but now I believe it was some issue with the combination of quests I was on). I reloaded a save from just before I walked outside and saw that there was instead a bow sitting on the ground just outside my house. When I looked down at it I saw an interact popup to Search Balbus. I'm able to loot his corpse, but his body isn't there, or at least isn't visible. I tried toggling clipping off and going under the world and he is still not there. I can pick up his 'body' and move it somewhere else but it never becomes visible, and I cannot target it in the console earlier. So, I came here to look up his refID in order to resurrect him, but it's not listed. I checked TES Wiki as well and the refID listed there doesn't work. Is there any way to find Balbus' RefID? I'd rather not have to use placeatme as spawning new instances of NPCs tends to leads to unwanted behaviour. --184.147.41.28 11:00, 10 June 2013 (GMT)

Certain NPCs, including Balbus, have randomly generated RefIDs, which is why we don't have one listed. If one is posted somewhere, it is unique to one player's game and not useful to other players in any way. I'm not sure how to solve your problem, but I figured I would at least explain the lack of RefID on the article. (In your game, the ID will start with "FF" but other than that, it's entirely unique, not sure how to find your game's version.) — ABCface 13:12, 10 June 2013 (GMT)

Balbus respawning NPC?[edit]

Category:Skyrim-Respawning_NPCs

Saw him in the respawning NPC section. Is this true? 76.166.130.139 09:07, 4 August 2013 (GMT)

Yes, according to game data he does respawn. — ABCface 17:16, 4 August 2013 (GMT)
Then why does the page say that, as a bug, he may be killed by hostile entities, since he remains in one place? I mean, I guess this could be considered a bug, but does it matter to the player? 81.231.143.37 19:53, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
