Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Speak to Urag gro-Shub at the College of Winterhold or Speak to Septimus Signus at his outpost

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

After the completion of the quest Prophet, you will be told by Dexion Evicus that all three Elder Scrolls must be obtained in order for him to read the whole prophecy and points you towards the College of Winterhold to gather more information.

Gain access to the College by either passing Faralda's test or persuading her to let you through (requires a Speech skill of 100), and head to the Arcanaeum. Here you will find Urag gro-Shub, who will fill you in on some of the Elder Scrolls lore and bring out two books for you: Effects of the Elder Scrolls and Ruminations on the Elder Scrolls.

Reading the latter starts the quest Discerning the Transmundane; once you speak to Urag about Septimus Signus, this quest will be completed. Alternatively, you can skip the College and head directly to Septimus Signus's Outpost and talk to the man himself, which will also complete this quest.

If you have already obtained and subsequently sold the Elder Scroll to Urag gro-Shub at the College of Winterhold (only possible after completing Alduin's Bane), you must buy back the Elder Scroll. He'll sell it back for 4,000 gold, but he can be persuaded to sell it for half price if you are the Arch-Mage or 3,000 gold if you aren't.

Notes[edit]

  • If you're doing Discerning the Transmundane as part of this quest and have Serana with you, you may want to avoid Alftand to get to Blackreach, as she will frequently raise nearby corpses, including the ones you'll want later, during the blood harvest portion of that quest.

Notes
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage DLC1VQElderHandler stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest DLC1VQElderHandler.
