Rolff Stone-Fist
Rolff and Angrenor bullying Suvaris

Rolff Stone-Fist is a Nord warrior living in Windhelm who spends much of his day in Candlehearth Hall. He is very hateful towards Dark Elves and Argonians, and he is somewhat convinced that the Dark Elves are Imperial Legion spies or even allied with the Thalmor.

After his initial conversation with Angrenor Once-Honored and Suvaris Atheron, Rolff will assume a very simple lifestyle. He will lounge around Candlehearth Hall all day, until it's 8pm, at which point he will drunkenly stumble outside. After four hours of this, he will start his daily routine of hurling insults at the inhabitants of the Gray Quarter. At 4am, he will have tired himself out and return to the hall, without ever stopping to sleep.

Rolff wears a belted tunic, a pair of boots, and a hat. He is equipped with an iron dagger and carries a selection of lower-class loot and gold.

Dialogue[edit]

As you enter Windhelm for the first time, Rolff and Angrenor Once-Honored can be seen bullying Suvaris Atheron:

Rolff: "You come here where you're not wanted, you eat our food, you pollute our city with your stink and you refuse to help the Stormcloaks."
Suvaris: "But we haven't taken a side because it's not our fight."
Angrenor: "Hey, maybe the reason these gray-skins don't help in the war is because they're Imperial spies!"
Suvaris: "Imperial spies? You can't be serious!"
Rolff: "Maybe we'll pay you a visit tonight, little spy. We got ways of finding out what you really are."

When first spoken to he will react harshly no matter what race you are:

"You. You a Dark Elf lover? Get out of our city, you filthy piece of trash."

If you are a Dark Elf, he will say:

"You damn gray-skin. Go back to Morrowind!"

If you comment on his bad attitude, he will challenge you to a brawl:

I don't like your attitude.
"Don't like it? Too bad. This is our city. Ours! Don't think I can take you? One hundred septims says I can punch you back where you came from."
You're on. (Brawl - 100 gold)
"All right. Fists only. And none of that magic stuff, either. Let's go!"

If you accept the brawl, but don't have the 100 gold, he will say:

"I said a hundred gold! Damn broke elves and damn broke elf-lovers."
I've got better things to do.
"Pit bait."

When he lies on the ground after losing, he will say:

"That wasn't a fair swing."

When handing over the money, he will simply say:

You lost. Give me my money.
"Yeah. Here."
Why do you hate the dark elves [sic]?
"They're parasites. They're living in our city, under our protection, but what do they do for us? Nothing! I know the High King invited them here, but he didn't ask me or anyone else first. Maybe he should have."
You really think the dark elves [sic] are Imperial spies?
"Wouldn't surprise me. They've done nothing to help in the fight for Skyrim's freedom. Those Thalmor are elves, too. I bet they're working together. Maybe I should round up some men and take us a few prisoners to interrogate."

If you are a Nord, he may exit conversations with:

"Watch out some gray-skin doesn't pick your pocket."

If you aren't, he will instead say:

"Get out of my face."

At other times, he can be heard saying:

"Every night, I walk around the Gray Quarter and let them gray-skins know what I think of 'em."
"We ought dig a big hole, throw all them dark elves and Argonians in it, and let 'em tear each other to pieces."
"Only thing I hate worse than those scale-backs are them filthy gray-skins!"
"The Gray Quarter's a disgrace. Them dark elves [sic] live like animals."
"Can't see why we let them dark elves [sic] live inside the walls. We should kick 'em out like we did to the scalebacks."

True to his word, he can be found in the Gray Quarter during the night, shouting all kinds of insults:

"Go back to Morrowind, Dark Elf maggots! You're not welcome here!"
"Get out of our city, gray-skins! This is Nord land!"
"We don't want your kind here, dark elves [sic]!"
"This place reeks of gray-skin filth!"
"You like living in this filthy slum, dark elves [sic]? Maybe you should go back to Morrowind, where you belong!"

Notes[edit]

  • Winning a brawl against him makes low-level items in Candlehearth Hall freely available, it will also raise his disposition towards you and make him consider you a friend, even if you're a Dark Elf or have sided with the Imperial Legion.
  • Rolff shares a last name with Galmar Stone-Fist, the second-in-command to Ulfric Stormcloak. In the Creation Kit, Galmar and Rolff are marked as brothers, but neither party will ever mention each other in-game. No-one else refers to the connection either.

Bugs[edit]

  • If their conversation with Suvaris is interrupted by combat (e.g. by a dragon or vampire attack), Rolff and Angrenor will be stuck standing at the main gate permanently.
  • If you challenge him to a brawl, he may use his iron dagger instead of his fists.
  • When challenged to a brawl, if you throw the first punch, it may count as a crime.
