Catch of the Day

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Talk to Swims-In-Deep-Water inside the Riften Fishery.
  2. Read the book in the back room of the Fishery for the optional objective.
  3. Go outside the Fishery and at the end of the dock is a Rod and Fishing Supplies where you can catch the list of fish.
  4. Return to Swims-In-Deep-Water.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

To begin this quest you need to speak to Swims-In-Deep-Water:

I'd like to improve my fishing skills. Could you teach me a few things?
"Of course."
An entire list of fish to catch? But I only just learned how to fish!
"That doesn't change anything."

You then have three options:

Should I cook them for you while I'm at it?
"What? Nooo!"
Relax, I was just joking.
"You expect me to believe that?"
The fish you tend to at the Fishery must be very important to you.
"It speaks the truth."
I'll bring them back soon.
"My thanks to you."
I'll do my best. No promises.
"Of course."

He will hand you a list of fair weather fish, which requests you to catch:

You can find a copy of Fishing Mastery, v1 on a shelf in the room behind Swims. This book will inform you of where you can catch each of these fish. All of the fish can be found in temperate lakes and rivers, see this link for a list of fishing locations, but these fish can all be caught in the docks of Riften and along the river that leads to Ivarstead.

Once you have caught all the fish required, return to Swims:

Here are the fish you asked for.
"You've done well."

He will then reward you with 200 gold.

Quest Stages[edit]

Catch of the Day (ccBGSSSE001_Fish_MQ1)
Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
10 Swims-In-Deep-Water has given me a list of fish I should catch to improve my fishing skills. I should read the note to see what I need to catch.
Objective : Read the list of fair weather fish
20 Swims-In-Deep-Water would like me to catch fish that can commonly be caught in streams and lakes in the warmer parts of Skyrim. Once I've caught one of each, I should return them to him. His field guide, Fishing Mastery, should provide details on each fish and how they can be caught. He mentioned that a copy is sitting on a shelf in the back room of the Riften Fishery.
Objective 0: Obtain a carp
Objective 1: Obtain a glassfish
Objective 2: Obtain a goldfish
Objective 3: Obtain a pogfish
Objective 75: (Optional) Read Fishing Mastery, v1
21 I read the first volume of Fishing Mastery, Swims-In-Deep-Water's field guide. All of the fish I need to catch can be caught in the warmer parts of Skyrim on a clear day. Goldfish and glassfish can only be caught in lakes, while pogfish are found in streams. Carp can be caught in both lakes and streams. I should be able to catch what I need by fishing of off the docks near the Riften Fishery, and along the river that leads to Ivarstead.
Objective 50: Return to Swims-In-Deep-Water
200 Finishes quest☑ I've given Swims-In-Deep-Water all of the fish he requested as proof of completing his fishing challenge. In return, he gave me a sum of gold, as well as a key to the Riften Fishery.

Notes
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage ccBGSSSE001_Fish_MQ1 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest ccBGSSSE001_Fish_MQ1.
