Inconsistent location[edit]

It may be possible that M'aiq appears in different areas in the same zone, either all at once, one at a time, one location per player, or some such. His location in Auridon was previously listed as Smuggler's Cove (I think it was there, anyway) before it was updated to Soulfire Plateau as of the time of writing, but I found him at Monkey's Rest. 124.176.92.44 07:50, 13 April 2014 (GMT)

It's possible. I removed Smuggler's Cove because I've been there dozens of times and never seen him. Seemed implausible that he was there. I'll look at Monkey's Rest though. Jeancey (talk) 08:34, 13 April 2014 (GMT)
I don't think we should be removing information for no real reason. Whoever added that location was unlikely to be confused or lying. —Legoless (talk) 13:54, 13 April 2014 (GMT)
Well, my reason for removing it is that I have checked the location in question many, many, many times and NEVER have seen him there. So maybe he was there during beta and not now, but I have yet to find him there. Empirically, he isn't there. Though I removed it under the assumption that he was at a single location in each zone, and after finding him at another location, it was clear to me that the first location was incorrect. However, if he appears at multiple locations in each zone, that makes things more difficult. I didn't remove it for no reason. Jeancey (talk) 19:07, 13 April 2014 (GMT)
Fair enough, but now that we think he has multiple points of appearance it may be worth adding back. —Legoless (talk) 22:26, 13 April 2014 (GMT)

Loading[edit]

"A bartender told M'aiq he must wait outside until the tavern was clean. It was only a short time, so M'aiq did not mind."
Would that not be a reference to loading times? — Unsigned comment by 89.143.115.234 (talk) at 15:21 on 21 April 2014 (GMT)

Maybe, but all of the bars I've seen haven't had a loading screen. —Legoless (talk) 15:28, 21 April 2014 (GMT)
I think the IP meant the waiting function, but ESO doesn't have that. —<({Quill-Tail>> 16:50, 21 April 2014 (GMT)
Loading time generally refers to loading screens. —Legoless (talk) 16:52, 21 April 2014 (GMT)
Could also be a reference to how stores were "closed" (meaning you couldn't buy anything) in Oblivion, even when the shop owner was present and at the shop stall, simply because it was a few minutes before the store was supposed to open. If you waited, you could use the store, but the storekeeper never had to move at all. Jeancey (talk) 16:58, 21 April 2014 (GMT)
I would have thought it was a reference to server maintenance, personally. 121.216.66.122 12:02, 6 May 2014 (GMT)
I personally thought it was a reference to the fact that services are available at all time of the day in MMORPGs, but not in other elder scrolls games. --AN|L (talk) 22:40, 6 May 2014 (GMT)

M'aiq in Shadowfen[edit]

I've been to what I believe to be the correct listed location for M'aiq in Shadowfen (NW corner of map, SW of biggest island on the coast; under the tree I find a tipped boat, some barrels, some fleshflies, a wasp, and pure water nearby). I've even looked everywhere up and down the coast, on the mainland, and day or night, but I never find him in this location. Can anybody confirm he's there? Do we have any other locations for him in Shadowfen? — Unsigned comment by ColeMarie (talkcontribs) at 15:42 on 6 May 2014

It's thought that where he appears is variable in some way, but we don't know exactly how it works. --AN|L (talk) 15:49, 6 May 2014 (GMT)
I know for sure he isn't at the locations ALL the time, as I have found him at a location, came back later and he wasn't there. Jeancey (talk) 16:10, 6 May 2014 (GMT)
Yep. I've yet to see him since the beta, despite hunting around. —Legoless (talk) 22:49, 6 May 2014 (GMT)

found places need vericication[edit]

i just made this so that people can put the places where they found him in here and so that other people can try to confirm these places.

  • I found M'aiq in grathwood north of terlain heights dolmen.
  • Found M'aiq in malabal tor west of valegaurd wayshrine in a burnt house.

Daggerfall Covenant
Okay I (not same as above) have verified M'aiq in all the Daggerfall Covenant locations, in game versions 1.0.8 to 1.1.4.
In my experience, M'aiq may be limited to daytime hours, but I am not certain of that. --Mctaylor (talk) 23:28, 14 June 2014 (GMT)
This discussion is pretty useless. If you want to confirm or add a location, please feel free to edit the page instead. —Legoless (talk) 18:21, 11 June 2014 (GMT)

Quotes by location[edit]

Are quotes limited to location? I removed the few entries on the page. If they are we could break the list up by location. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 14:37, 12 July 2014 (GMT)

Over time I have noticed this too. Each location seems to have a selection of quotes used, and their internal order also seem to be consistent too, though there also seems to be a few fixed variations chosen between on each location. —MortenOSlash (talk) 05:40, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
Yep, that's correct. Actually determining which lines are said where is a bit tricky though, considering the difficulty in tracking him down. —Legoless (talk) 17:38, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

() I heard the mudcrab comment on Khenarthi's Roost too, are we sure it's tied to Auridon? Anyone heard it in other zones? Cailin (talk) 22:43, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

It'd make sense if they were tied. Can't confirm though. —Legoless (talk) 23:01, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

Patching holes quote[edit]

I have a feeling the "walking in rain, rather than patching holes" quote is a nod that some games companies would rather release buggy games and just have their customers play it, and not bother fixing any bugs. Anyone agree? --Rezalon (talk) 08:40, 1 April 2015 (GMT)

I think it's more literal - notice whenever you are underneath a shelter but still outdoors in the rain - the rain seems to "leak" through the roof. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 21:40, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Reference to American folk song, Arkansas Traveler. "...My cabin never leaks when it doesn't rain."

Topic Bump - Online talk:M'aiq[edit]

It's been almost two years since people were wondering what times M'aiq shows up at the various places. Has anyone deduced his patterns yet? I've seen him in a few regions, but haven't been able to catch him in Reaper's March or Kenarthi's Roost despite multiple attempts. Have we gained any new information on him over the last couple of years? Did any Patches make any changes to his schedule or locations? Thanks! Minotaur (talk) 09:13, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

I'm 99% certain it's random chance, not a discernable schedule or pattern. Just keep checking the possible spawning points. —Legoless (talk) 10:19, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
The only way to find out would have been to do a massive coordinated simultaneous visits to a large number of possible spawning points, preferably with at least two players together at a few of the locations, to see if they both observe him at once. However I agree with Legoless it is probably a random chance, and adding to than, I believe it is an individual observation. I do not think two players arriving together always will see him at the same location at the same time. —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:20, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
Well, I at least had once the experience of someone calling M'aiq's position in chat, and as I went there he was truely there. So I assume he is there for all players, at least those on the same "shard". -- SarthesArai Talk 19:45, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for all the feedback. Ironically, I went back to Kenarthi's Roost the next day and M'aiq was there. Still working on the rest. Wish the game had some form of clock or time display - not for this per se, but just in general. I spent 5-6 "nights" looking for werewolves and wound up with vampirism. Didn't mind at first, but then it turned me from an imposing black reptilian horror into a giant pink salamander. Sorry, getting off topic there. The clock thing reminded me. I was thinking it would make it easier to narrow M'aiq's appearances to morning, noon, or evening - assuming he does show up at all. Anyway, thanks again! Minotaur (talk) 04:56, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

() Outside the game, though, but UESP has the Game Clock, that might (if I understood correctly) later be joined by an in-game clock through the uespLog AddOn. Having a clock could help players seeing patterns in the AI behaviour that is not easy to observe. —MortenOSlash (talk) 08:02, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

Message about wine[edit]

"M'aiq thinks those with the most wine can never truly be pleased. This is why he drinks water." I think what the devs say here is not "wine" but "whine". It's about people who always complain. They will never be satisfied no matter what you do. — Unsigned comment by 81.200.82.154 (talk) at 09:25 on 17 January 2018

The first part of it can be read that way, but the second part makes no sense with it, and all parts should make sense even when read as what it is referencing. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 12:34, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Houseguest dialogue/response about obscure achievements[edit]

This one: "You and M'aiq share a common pastime. We both go out of our way to collect obscure achievements by any means necessary. M'aiq likes that about you." Currently hypothesized to appear if a player has completed the "I like M'aiq" achievement but may not be true. One player tested with under 6000 total achievement points WITH the achievement completed and did NOT get the line. Another player also with the achievement and ALSO over 38,000 achievement points did NOT get the line. Therefore the prerequisite must be something else and the page edited to reflect as such? (More players to confirm the latter two examples however would also be nice/needed...)

Data so far: YES line = at 39,570 total achievement points with m'aiq achievement (eslofe). NO line = at 16110 and no m'aiq achievement (Evarelia). YES line = at 22,680 with m'aiq achievement (Baratron). NO line = at 19.8k without achieve (Baratron). YES line = at 31950 w/ achieve (Shifty). NO line = at ~38k achievement points w/ achieve (Tatanko). NO line = at 5750 achievement points w/ achieve (Adhara).
