The Great Tree is ill
There's a crisis at Windcatcher Plantation. Something is wrong with their Great Tree, and the locals believe it has something to do with the tree's roots, which can be accessed from a cave below it.

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Talk to Spinner Benieth or Edheldor.
  2. Enter the Mangroves and talk to Naarwe.
  3. Protect the nature spirit from kwama as it heals four root sections.
  4. Return to Spinner Benieth.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Northwest of Windcatcher Plantation, you can find either Spinner Benieth or Edheldor fretting about the condition of the nearby Great Tree. They are concerned over some kind of fetid miasma surrounding the tree -- definitely not normal for this tree, from the sound of it. A tree spirit was dispatched to attempt to heal the tree, but to no avail. After agreeing to help look into the problem, you'll enter a cave under the tree, where you'll find Naarwe, a kwama farmer.

"Been a kwama master for over a decade. I'm not afraid to admit when I'm up to my neck in droppings, and I sure could use a hand getting out."
What's the problem?
"Ever try piloting a ship through a hurricane while your entire cargo of kwama eggs hatch and go bug-nuts? Been there, can't recommend it.
After we wrecked, they made a kwama-line toward this cave. I came after them, but they're a bit distracted."
Distracted? What do you mean by distracted?
"They always get surly after hatching, but these kwama are downright unsociable. I tried to stop them from chewing on those huge roots. They objected.
Bumped into a fine-looking tree trunk on my way out. Thought I was done for, but it kept walking."
That must be the spirit attempting to heal the roots.
"Oh? Kwama didn't take to it, whatever it was. I heard them munching on it, same as those roots.
The little ones seemed scared of it. If you can help the pretty tree trunk do what it needs to do, I bet they'll head back this way."
The spirit healing the roots

So the problem seems to be unruly kwama chewing on the roots of the Great Tree and preventing the spirit from doing its work. You'll need to protect the tree spirit from kwama while it does its work to heal the Great Tree. Heading further into the cave, you'll find the tree spirit already at work. Kill any kwama that attack it and you'll be done in short order. The spirit visits four locations, after each of which some of the kwama settle down. Head back outside and speak to the Spinner to close out the quest.

Notes[edit]

  • Edheldor ceases to exist outside the cave if you have accepted the quest from Benieth at the tree instead.
  • Naarwe and the Nature Guardian won't exist in the cave before starting the quest.
  • Outside of the Kwama inhabiting the cave already at fix spawn points, no additional Kwama will spawn to attack the spirit while she heals the roots.

Quest Stages[edit]

The Root of the Problem
Finishes Quest Journal Entry
Spinner Benieth sent a spirit below to heal the Great Tree's roots, but something has impeded its progress. Perhaps I'll learn more if I find the cave entrance.
Objective: Enter the Cave
I found a wounded man Inside [sic] the cave's entrance. I should talk to him and find out what's going on here.
Objective: Talk to Naarwe
Naarwe is a kwama master. When his ship wrecked, his kwama escaped and headed inside the cave. He said I might need to fight some kwama to protect the spirit.
Objective: Protect the Spirit as It Heals the Roots: 0/4
Finishes quest☑ I should inform Spinner Benieth that the spirit healed the Great Tree.
Objective: Talk to Spinner Benieth
Notes
* Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the game and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
