If you speak to him without talking to Daribert Hurier, he will say "This better not be another Montclair trick."

Speaking to him:

"Halt! In case you haven't noticed, you walked into the middle of a war zone. Why shouldn't I just assume you're one of Montclair's soldiers and cut you down where you stand?"
I was passing by and it looked like you could use some help.
"So you say. But you weren't just stabbed in the back by House Montclair troops!
We barely managed to make it to this tower and set up a defense after the traitorous scum attacked us."
Fine, if you don't want my help ....
"Now hold on. Let's not be too hasty. If you want to help, our healer Heloise is low on supplies.
We had to abandon our carts along the road when the Montclairs ambushed us. Gather the healing supplies and bring them back here."
I'll get the healing supplies.
"I'm still not sure I can trust you, but it's not like I have a lot of choices at the moment.
Come back with those healing supplies and maybe I'll change my mind."
Tell me about the attack.
"Ever since Baron Montclair annexed the upper city of Shornhelm, we've been going out on patrol. To keep them from annexing anything else, you understand. They were waiting for us when we got the Hinault's farm, though."
Who was waiting for you?
"Soldiers loyal to House Montclair. They came out of the darkness and caught us by surprise. It was a slaughter!
Luckily, I was able to rally some of my troops and we made our way here."
This is all that's left of your forces?
"Why are you asking all these questions? There are enough of us to defend this tower, make no mistake about that!
But I do have more wounded soldiers than healthy ones at this point. My healer could certainly use more healing supples."
Why is Montclair on the rampage?
"Who knows why nobles do anything? I never did trust him, though. Ever since he supported Ranser against the High King.
But I'll tell you this. There were vampires in Montclair's ranks. Even his officers seemed to take orders from them."

When you return with the supplies, he will say:

"Took you long enough. Did you go all the way to Shornhelm to get those supplies?"
I recovered your healing supplies.

Alternatively, after meeting Daribert Hurier on the road and gathering some supplies, you'll take them to the besieged lieutenant:

"Speak up and talk fast. After that surprise attack, I'm not feeling very trusting or hospitable toward strangers."
I recovered your healing supplies.

Either way, when you return the supplies, he will respond:

"Our healing supplies? Heloise could certainly use those.
All right, I'll order them to unlock the tower door. But understand this—if you betray us in any way, I'll kill you myself and toss your lifeless body from the top of the tower."

He'll shout the orders to the Old Tower:

Lieutenant Fairfax: "Unlock the tower door!"

If you try to speak to him again, he'll berate you for your idleness:

"What are you waiting for? Get those healing supplies to Heloise."

After speaking to Heloise and agreeing to escort her to check on the Hinault family, Fairfax will express concern:

"Heloise wants permission to check on the Hinault family. If you're going to help her, I guess I'll have to trust her judgment.
Just keep an eye on her, please. She looks a little pale to me. I'm worried she may be working too hard."

Return to Fairfax after the events at the farmhouse and he'll say:

"There you are! Have you seen Heloise? Some of the Hinaults have arrived, but I haven't seen Heloise since she ran off with her healing kit."
I haven't seen her since I left the farmhouse to look for the Hinault family.
"Well, she hasn't come back yet and I'm starting to worry. I think she's ill and trying hard not to show it. Hopefully, she'll be back soon.
For now, go inside and check on the Hinaults. I promised to send you to them when you arrived."

Before you enter in the tower and speaking to him again:

"Go in the tower and talk to the Hinaults. Reassure them. They're both pretty shaken up.
But if Heloise doesn't return soon, I may need to send you out to find her."

Enter the Old Tower and talk to the Hinault siblings. Heloise will arrive and cause a commotion. As you follow her, Fairfax will ask:

"What in Oblivion's name happened in there? Heloise ran right past me, crying her eyes out.
Well, don't just stand there! Get after her! She's not safe out there on her own."

After hunting down the healer, you'll have a difficult choice to make. Once you've decided, return to Fairfax:

Heloise Died:
Heloise was Spared:
"Where's Heloise? What happened to her?"
Heloise killed Gennove Hinault. She decided to take her own life.
"I knew something wasn't right. She had stopped eating. It made her ill. I wish she could have told me what was happening to her. Maybe I could have helped.
Rest in peace, Heloise. Rest in peace."

Talking with him afterwards.

"Heloise was such a kind soul. I can't believe they turned her into a monster!
Damn the Montclairs! Damn them all to Oblivion!"
"Where's Heloise? Is she all right? Does she need help?"
Something was wrong with Heloise. She decided to go away to keep people safe.
"I knew something was wrong. I tried to get her to talk to me. Maybe I could have done something and then she'd still be here.
But she's alive, right? That's something. When this business with Montclair is over, I'll find her. I'll bring her back."

Talking with him afterwards.

"Thank you for sparing Heloise's life. I'll find her and we'll figure this out. Together.
We just need to deal with these traitorous Montclairs first."

The Crown of Shornhelm[edit]

Lieutenant Fairfax in Shornhelm Castle

He will be one of the guests attending the coronation of the new ruler of Rivenspire. If Heloise lived, she can be found sitting next to him.

"It's an honor to see you again, my friend. May the gods bless you for all of your days!"

Otherwise he will be by himself.

"Wherever she is, I wonder if Heloise is watching all this. I hope she's at peace."
