glitch?[edit]

I once had this game for the computer and I was doing this mission. I saved when the target is swimming, before i was about to kill him. I tried the arrow and missed so i reloaded the save. Then for some reason my computer would not load the save or anyother saves related to that specific character. — Unsigned comment by 66.216.249.141 (talk) at 18:27 on July 5, 2011

There's a note stating retaking the finger won't duplicate the quest[edit]

However...it can duplicate the update as many times as you pick up and place the finger in the desk. ...I now have 6 updates each for taking the finger and putting it in the desk. Of course, I am still ON the quest and haven't reported back to the Sanctuary but, virtually you could get infinite (unless there is a maximum number) updates from picking up and placing the finger in the desk...TVthePunisher 02:18, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

It says it will not duplicate the quest, which it doesn't. It duplicates the quest update, but there will still only be one copy of Permanent Retirement in your completed quest log. --DKong27 Tk Ctr Em 02:36, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Wearing the Brotherhood Garments[edit]

Would you be able to wear the clothing to help further this quest? or would you be spotted automatically by the retired man himself? (Cookies... lots and lots of cookies!!! 21:26, 12 October 2011 (UTC))

I don't think it makes any difference either way, you could always try it though.RIM 22:06, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
Woot!!! It works!!! (Cookies... lots and lots of cookies!!! 05:22, 13 October 2011 (UTC))

Duplicating the arrow[edit]

If I duplicate the arrow using a duplication glitch, would it work on anybody and always kill in one shot even after i complete the quest? — Unsigned comment by 68.199.209.235 (talk) on 16 October 2011

Nope. The scripting only affects Adamus. rpeh •TCE 14:01, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

talking to Adamus[edit]

If you talk to him before you kill him, and I was wearing the Brotherhood Armor, he will say you are part of the Brotherhood and attack you.

Serious quest-halting glitch[edit]

Looking to the experts out there.... the "incredibly rare" glitch, as described in the article, keeps happening no matter how long I wait, or how many times I reload. the glitch i'm refering to is the one where I am sneaking, undetected, I fire the rose of sithis at an exposed part of his body while he is swimming, I hit, but all it ever does is wound him. any advice? i'm playing on an xbox 360 with no patches or updates (that I know about)

I had this same glitch(except on PC), I reloaded the save and after Adamus went swimming, I just moved a bit further away from Adamus, i.e, the opposite wooden plank across his bodyguard, and shot him. It worked then on 99.235.38.225 21:52, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
I fixed this in 1 second using the above instructions a few hours ago. Get close to him when he's getting out of the water, stay hidden and save, then keep pickpocketing his shield til you pull it off undetected. Wait for 22 hours then use the arrow. I spent nearly 4 hours using silthis and getting nowhere before i got frustrated and outright attacking him. After pickpocketing his shield, he died straight away. - 121.44.217.252 23:49, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
I don't think the glitch is rare. For me it happened every time when shooting from a closer distance and did not happen when shooting from far, across the pond (2 successful tries). It's funny. I can shoot him from far and not from close. --93.73.19.163 14:55, 17 September 2012 (GMT)

Weird behavior from bodyguard[edit]

I waited at the pond with 105% Chameleon enchanted armor and a very high sneak skill. The target came at the usual time, and I shot him when he was more or less in the middle of the pond. His bodyguard didn't even seem to notice. I waited for a bit, then swam out to his body and looted it. But when I swam back to shore, on the other side of the pond, his bodyguard suddenly appeared in front of me, up to his shoulders in the water, and arrested me for theft! I paid the bounty, and he released me, standard procedure, easy as could be. That's.... weird. I can understand how Chameleon doesn't stop you from being seen when you're traveling across water, because the ripples would still be visible, but why was the bodyguard so little concerned at his master's death, and so obsessed with what became of his master's money? Or perhaps did he only see me rob the body, not shoot the fellow in the first place? 174.6.51.17 04:53, 9 July 2013 (GMT)

Another option[edit]

It's possible to evade the murder charge altogether, though it's rather difficult. If Phillida's in the barracks, summon a Daedroth on the ground floor. Aggravate your Daedroth by attacking it. This will cause the guards in the Barracks to attack the Daedroth. As there are plenty of guards, your hope is that one of the other guards will accidentally shoot Phillida, or Phillida accidentally hits one of them. This will lead to a tantrum spiral that will kill guards and Phillida, all without you incurring a bounty so long as your summon doesn't take the last shot to kill a guard. You still have to dodge the bodyguard though, he will go hostile, and it can be difficult to transport the pieces of armor outside of the barracks.

You can kill Phillida out in the open, with a variation on this tactic. Since the guards are not as concentrated outside, you want to select another NPC and cast Frenzy on them to draw the attention of the guards. The hope here is that one of the guards will strike Phillida trying to shoot your NPC, or Phillida will shoot another guard. To do this you'll want to choose an NPC that is reasonably combat adept, I have had success with dark brotherhood member Talendril.

Bug Fixed on XBox One?[edit]

I'd done this quest in the past and never been able to make the arrow kill Phillida, but this week I got in the mood to replay the game, and when I got to this quest, I gave it a shot again (so to speak). To my surprise, it worked perfectly. This is the first time I've ever see this quest go the way I think it was meant to.

On the other hand, I still got a bounty for theft when I took the finger. Not sure if there's any way to avoid that.

I've noticed other improvements in Oblivion on the XBox One, most notably that load times are much, much faster. Now I'm wondering if they fixed any other bugs.

Completely different bounty bug[edit]

Decided to see if I could pull off - like the article suggests for a difficult approach - walking straight up to Phillida in my Black Robe and telling him Sithis needs his soul, getting the entire town guard to go after me. While this option did cause Phillida, his bodyguard, and multiple watch members from elsewhere in the city (those stationed to guard the castle, countess's bodyguard, the jailor) to start hacking away at me, it somehow did not give me a bounty. I killed each of them with poisons and then ran to the barracks expecting to see more resistance, but just got a warning for trespassing. I attacked 7 members of the watch alongside Phillida all in broad daylight (I realize the poisons would have prevented me from getting murder-level bounties anyway) and the rest of the town guard doesn't care. Has this ever happened to anyone else? 98.223.172.97 04:21, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Changed things up, approached him inside the barracks, aggroed by my count 17 guards counting Phillida after choosing the "Imperial Pig" option. Got a 40 coin bounty instead of the expected 680. 98.223.172.97 04:33, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
