Bounty and Infamy[edit]

I just did this quest three times and found that if you are attacked by a member of the Brethren you get no infamy or bounty. If you sneak attack them you get an Assault bounty (40). My current character wasn't good enough to kill anybody in one shot but at no point could I get a murder bounty (1000) and neither did I get any infamy. Anybody else? –RpehTCE 12:32, 8 April 2008 (EDT)

I did this quest a few days ago. I wiped out all the brethren in the caverns without any bounty. I suspect the confusion may come from the fact that some of the 'above ground' residents of Hackdirt also like to hang out in the caverns and will fight alongside the Brethren. However, I killed most of those people too... and still no bounty. I just made sure that I didn't hit anyone until after they had attacked me first. In my game Hackdirt has a surviving population of two and my stats page shows a maximum bounty of 40, which I got from something else entirely as part of the 'Two Sides of the Coin' quest. --12.42.51.28 14:25, 8 April 2008 (EDT)
I definately got the bounty. Before heading to Hackdirt I'd been in Chorrol, no problems with the guards there. Right after leaving Hackdirt I went to IC, guards all came running straight at me. The bounty was 3000, of course it's possible that I committed some other crime in the meantime, but I can't for the life of me think what it was. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 16:13, 8 April 2008 (EDT)
I'm not saying I don't believe you, just that it's going to need some research. Can you remember how you made the kills? Sneak attacks? With bow or a blade/blunt? Did anybody see you? I'm actually surprised they cause a bounty at all - after all, they attack on sight, but I guess this is just one of those things that makes writing a wiki so much fun :/ –RpehTCE 03:25, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
I have never received a bounty for killing the Brethren. However, I did receive a bounty when I returned to Hackdirt after completing the quest, and was attacked (above ground) by the Moslins and a few more Brethren. --Gaebrial 05:24, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
Perhaps you get the bounty if you rally Brethrens without having A Shadow Over Hackdirt quest activated? --Baranello 05:40, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
It could perhaps something to do with the platform as I am on the Xbox 360. --User:Foxtrot 23:21, 15 May 2008 (EDT)
Game Lord, you had a 3000 gold bounty. Did you only kill three brethren? There are alot more of them than that in the caverns and they usually attack en masse. I suspect that if you go back to Oblivion:Hackdirt you will find that three of the named residents are missing. If you used area-of-effect attacks in the caverns or just started slashing away when a crowd charged at you then chances are you hit one of the named residents before they hit you. Even if they were clearly charging forward to attack you alongside the brethren the game considers it a crime for you to strike a named NPC first, and if they then die it becomes murder. Has anyone tried soul trapping one of the brethren? If they go into regular soul gems then they are implemented as creatures and definitely shouldn't give bounties. If they require black soul gems then they are NPCs and should cause bounties unless they have some sort of special scripting. They currently aren't listed under either category anywhere I've been able to find. --12.42.51.28 06:46, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
They're definitely NPCs; I was looking at them in the CS last night. –RpehTCE 06:59, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
I think that may be the cause. I err get sort of carried away when killing things. I simply assumed that all the people in the caverns were hostile, so I killed them all. A bit over the top, I know, but I sold their stuff and made at least another 20 gold :)
But back to the point, I think that 12.42.51.28 is right, and that I may have accidently killed the citizens. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 15:24, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
Okay. I'm going to do some more testing and see if I can get a murder bounty for a generic Hackdirt Brother but it looks like we're getting there! –RpehTCE 15:52, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
I have tested this and I did get a bounty for each one I killed. --Matthewest TCE 01:41, 18 April 2008 (EDT)
You get a bounty if you kill or assault and NPC before he goes hostile but im not totally sure if that goes along with bretheren but it will count as an assault and show up on the statistics page regardless who they areJay480 05:42, 14 August 2008 (EDT)

Needing Cleanup?[edit]

Does this page not already have NPC summaries? If so, may I remove the tag? --Matthewest TCE 07:40, 8 July 2008 (EDT)

Please do. - Foxtrot

Imp vs brethren[edit]

i dont know why but when i commited a crime in hackdirt (wich i know causes brethren to comeout) and when all the brethren came out they didnt attak me they ran into the woods and attaked imps I dont know why im on xbox so it couldent be mods allthough its only happened a few times i just dont get why they do it. --(Theblack7 22:14, 25 June 2010 (UTC))

Glitch?[edit]

(moved from the article - orginally added by User:67.189.29.98)

  • If you enter the caverns after killing the brethren you may be attacked by a villager(at night) at which point any villagers in the cavrens will be killable without bounty(as if you were defending yourself). (may be a glitch)

I'm not entirely sure what this means, so I moved it here - until we can get a better wording and some evidence it does not belong on the article. --Krusty 07:58, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Enchanted Jewelry?[edit]

The last Brethren is shown to be wearing an enchanted necklace. Is there a random chance that a Brethren will be wearing enchanted jewelry? -- Jplatinum16 04:38, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

They have the levelled item list, LL0LootJewelry10 (Which is unusual in itself as that is a container list, normally creatures have lists that start LLxNPC...) which gives a 10% chance of levelled non-magical jewellery. They also have a 10 chance of Tomb Ingredients, 15% chance of Micro Treasure (mixed lost with a chance of Gold, Lockspicks, Silverware, Bones, Rings or Soul Gems) and a 10 chance of a Soul Gem. The Deep Ones[edit]

Is there any way you can meet the "deep ones"? I've thoroughly explored the caverns under Hackdirt and couldn't find anything. Are they even in the game at all? I really wanted to wipe out this brainwashed cult once and for all. I stole their bible from their church and wiped out the Brethren, but they keep respawning. I figure if I could kill the Deep Ones it might put an end to the whole thing once and for all. --99.71.236.240 02:19, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

The deep ones don't make an appearance in the game, but there might be modms available for the PC which add them. --Pwnageincarnate 02:57, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Pwnageincarnate

Moved notes[edit]

  • Although hostile to you, you can receive a bounty of 40 gold if you are seen assaulting a member of the brethren that hasn't started to attack you yet.
  • Be careful if you head above ground to gain space as it is easy to become embroiled with the village's residents, killing one of whom will gain you a murder bounty of 1,000 gold leading to problems with the law.
  • The Brethren have a limited vocabulary, keeping their shouts mostly to things like "Outsider! Kill!", "Where...go?" and "You!...Die!", though they may also use phrases from standard Imperial NPCs.
  • The Brethren have unusually large eyes compared to most NPCs, most likely because of their living underground.
  • The Brethren have an ability which gives them Night Eye, Resist Frost 50, and Weakness to Fire 30.
  • The Brethren are actually Experts with Blunt weapons, proven by the fact they can use the sweeping power attack to knock you down.

I believe a few of these could be incorporated into the article properly, but besides that I believe they aren't notable. Please leave a message here if you plan on reinstating any as notes. --AKB Talk 18:02, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Seeing as all of these except the final are legitimate, (Their blunt level is obviously levelled) I think the section needs to stay.--Corevette789 18:40, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
