The Hackdirt Brethren are the hostile inhabitants of the caverns underneath Hackdirt. With their weak attacks and lack of armor, the Brethren are generally easy to kill, except for the fact that they frequently attack in large groups. Also, their ability to detect you is unusually good, due perhaps to their oversized eyes, making it very difficult to sneak past them. Invisibility and/or 100% chameleon are necessary if you want to avoid fighting them.

Many players will not encounter the Brethren until they start exploring the Hackdirt Caverns, since the Brethren rarely emerge above ground. However, if you sleep in Moslin's Inn, the Brethren will attack you in your sleep. Also, if you commit a crime in Hackdirt, the Brethren will typically surface and attack you.

The Brethren have a special ability which gives them the powers of night eye, resist frost 50, and weakness to fire 30.

Notes[edit]

  • Although hostile to you, you can receive a bounty of 40 gold if you are seen assaulting a member of the brethren that hasn't started to attack you yet.
  • Be careful if you head above ground to gain space as it is easy to become embroiled with the village's residents, killing one of whom will gain you a murder bounty of 1,000 gold leading to problems with the law.
  • The Brethren have a limited vocabulary, keeping their shouts mostly to things like "Outsider! Kill!", "Where...go?" and "You!...Die!", though they may also use phrases from standard Imperial NPCs.
  • The Brethren have unusually large eyes compared to most NPCs. This is in reference to The Shadow Over Innsmouth, with the locals of Innsmouth described as having "queer narrow heads with flat noses and bulgy starey eyes", to quote Lovecraft.
  • Even if you kill all the residents of Hackdirt, the Brethren will always respawn.
