Morrowind Spell Formulas[edit]

If anyone chances by this page and has access to the Morrowind Construction Set, I'm interested in the calculations behind Morrowind spells. Basically the sort of stuff on Oblivion:Spell_Making except applied to Morrowind. So how spells are costed, skill level, chance for successful cast, minimum/maximum magnitude, duration, targeting, and so on. I found a forum post from the official forum which describes the chance of successfully casting, but there's nothing else in the calculations. Ong elvin 03:29, 24 January 2008 (EST)

This is a very interesting question. Unfortunately, I don't think you can find that info in the CS (I may be wrong, though); you'll have to find out by trial and error within the game. I beleive some of these issues may already have been discusses before in the wiki, so have a look around. --DrPhoton 08:20, 24 January 2008 (EST)
Looks a bit complex to just do it by trial and error. Practically all the factors are interactive. I've got the base costs of the spells from UESP and the spell chance formula to start me off, but I'm just seeing a beginning and end. The middle's gonna be tricky. The minimum and maximum magnitudes don't seem to add exactly the same mana cost. Then the skill in the relevant school reduces the magicka cost. Since the attributes truly did govern the skills in Morrowind, it might mean Willpower also has a cost reduction effect, but this will need to be tested. Hmm... okay, I think it'd be easier to just sign up and ask on the official forums. Let's see how that goes then. Ong elvin 17:43, 24 January 2008 (EST)
A late answer, at least for the formula: *Casting spells can fail, unlike in Oblivion, failure rate is influenced by your skill rating in the relevant school of magic, your Willpower and your Fatigue. Instead of the cost of spells, skill level influences the chance of spell failure, using the following formula:
( [Luck / 8] + [Willpower / 4] + [Spell Skill * 2.5] - [Magic Cost * 1.25] ) * ( 0.6 + [0.4 * Current Fatigue / Max Fatigue] )
Hope this helps, at least partially --BenouldTC 12:44, 3 June 2008 (EDT)

That formula is already included at the end of the article. Ong elvin 19:36, 4 June 2008 (EDT)

Merge?[edit]

I'm thinking this information could be moved onto the Spellmakers page. Unlike Enchanting, it's short enough that it doesn't need its own page, and also unlike Enchanting, you can't do it on your own, so grouping it with the list of available Spellmakers makes a bit more sense. Any opinions? --TheRealLurlock Talk 10:38, 24 January 2008 (EST)

That sounds fine by me. --DrPhoton 13:41, 24 January 2008 (EST)
I agree that currently its short, thus the STUB tag. Maybe a merge for now would be good, but leave a redirect from here to the info, so that it matches Oblivion:Spell_Making somewhat. I envision this information eventually becoming comparable in size to the Oblivion explanation, and when it does it can be split back out. If/When it does get split back out, we can just add a link to Spellmaker. Ong elvin 17:31, 24 January 2008 (EST)
I kept the article as a redirect and deleted the prod tag since it seems likely that some players will look for this article under "Spell Making" (for example, that's the name of the Oblivion article). --NepheleTalk 13:15, 1 February 2008 (EST)
