Waiting?[edit]
What exactly does this part "without resorting to waiting during the third and fourth trials" mean? How will you be able to complete those trials by waiting? MAybe someone could elaborate on that part. -92.227.71.160 04:11, 29 July 2008 (EDT)
Falura Llervu[edit]
Falura Llervu is also essential, but it's not in the list. Yesterday I killed her accidentally while killing a wild creature, and then a message appeared in my screen that I couldn't complete the main quest anymore (lucky for me I had a very recent save game). 83.86.1.159 14:29, 28 August 2008 (EDT)
unofficial essential NPCs[edit]
Does the warning "killing these NPCs will prevent you from [completing some main quest part]" only apply when you "murder" them or also when you taunt them into attacking you? -Meisterdieb 04:15, 28 January 2009 (EST)
- It applies no matter how they die. You could even accidentally screw up the main quest by leading hostile creatures into the Ashlander camps and getting people killed in the process. As soon as they die, it sets a global variable that makes everyone else in the tribe hate you forever, even if you didn't do it or it was self-defense. Now you can reset the variable via console to fix it, provided you're on PC. Otherwise, you're pretty much screwed. --TheRealLurlock Talk 15:12, 28 January 2009 (EST)
- As I pointed out below, isn't this not true? I think you can bypass the Ashlander camps entirely by reaching level 21+ and having 50+ reputation (so the Archcanon requests your attendance immediately, bypassing the fourth and fifth trials.) Technically this means that everyone pretaining to the Horator quests are also non-essential, despite being marked as such. I suppose whether this counts depends on what people mean by "competing the main quest normally", but it does mean you can complete the main quest without resorting to the backpath even if most of the people on the unofficial list dies. --Aquillion (talk) 04:11, 7 September 2014 (GMT)
Caius' quest npcs[edit]
Caius gets angered by his "contacts" being killed even if their quest is complete. The npcs include Hasphat Antabolis, Sharn gra-Muzgob, Addhiranirr, Huleeya, Hassour Zainsubani, and Raesa Pullia. Caius will refuse to talk to you, and the only way to get around the auto-goodbye is by having a bounty of 1000+ gold(this has been tested by me and by Rohugh on Bethesda forums). Either these npcs should get a * by their name with a * note below about the auto-goodbye and the 1000 bounty to get around it, or they should all be considered essential until Caius gives the quest "Mehra Milo and the Lost Prophecies". "After you kill a essential NPC, you cannot save your game." Is this true? I don't remember ever having saved a game after killing an essential NPC, but I can't check whether this is true. -- Jplatinum16 17:29, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
- That is incorrect, killing someone with the "essential" box marked does not prevent saving. Part of the reason is that there is no coding to remove the "essential" flag once the npc has done their part. Narfblat 08:23, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Unofficial/official essential NPCs not in Main Quest?[edit]
I wonder if you could (or if there already is one) also list all NPCs that are essential for other quest lines, like Great Houses and Guilds. - Thing is, it doesn't list the NPCs essential for other quests than the main quest - "...but killing them will still prevent you from completing the Main Quest normally." By "unofficial essential NPCs" I mean NPCs that are not marked as essential by the game, but are still essential for certain quests. SwedishBerzerker at youtube.com 15:13, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Baladas Demnevanni[edit]

Unofficial essential NPCs and bypassing the fourth and fifth trials.[edit]
If you are level 21 or above and have 50 or more reputation, you can bypass the fourth and fifth trials (including all the XYZ Nerevarine quests.) Doesn't that make most of these "unofficial essential NPCs" actually non-essential? I assume that's the reason they're not marked as such. (The dialog Divayth Fyr gives when telling you to see the archcanon immediately even hints that that's the reason the bypass for that section of the main quest exists -- he basically says "you screwed up, didn't you? You're supposed to be Nerevarine already! Go see the Archcanon." IIRC he asks in as many words whether you've killed someone you shouldn't have, implying to me that that bypass was inserted specifically to avoid having to make all the Ashlanders essential.) You don't actually have to get recognized by the Ashlander tribes to beat the game, not even via the main route, since having 50+ reputation and a level of 21+ will cause you to get called in by the Archcanon immediately, provided you've completed the third trial. --Aquillion (talk) 04:05, 7 September 2014 (GMT)
